Maybe you need a good ol' Belgian pintke :) with all the 3rd party software hacked on a NIT w/Diablo you can expect some problems here and there.

Besides that, there are some rules when it comes down to software updates: First let the young, eager, and bored people try 'em.. ;) seriously, any Windows version very much required a service pack before it was usable. Sometimes even 2. People who buy the OS once its out are almost always developers, OEM, or fools.

Well, it does check disk space, I'm just not sure how well it accounts for the extra temporary storage needed during the install (or how well it really can count that).

Re: First Diablo SSU update is out (4.2008.30-2)

I have a dual SD card boot both with both with Diaablo . I did the update tonight without too much thought and now my system only boots from the flash side. When you think about it, it seems logical but I now have no boot menu. I know I can reflash but is there an easier way to get the system back to normal but more importantly, is this going to happen every time there is an update? I guess a really good reason not to boot an alternate system.

Does anyone have any ideas - other than don't upgrade ;)

Cheers

Install penguinbait's bootmenu in flash then restart and you should have it back.

Re: First Diablo SSU update is out (4.2008.30-2)

Well, I thought someone with somethng nice to say should come in here.... so - today at work I read on my favorite tablet forum that there was a diablo update available... and that it breaks your tablets boot menu and was sent from hell to kill us all.... So naturally the first thing I did was happily instal it the most logical way i thought possible... I boot from an internal MMC diablo and diablo on flash...so:

1) I booted to internal MMC; saw the update notification.. went ahead and updated..it warned me i would reboot - and I already knew my bootmenu was going to be hosed. So; it gets done; without error; and reboots.
2) Tablet reboots into flash on it's own... I run application manager and check for updates.. install 2 new updates... tablet reboots again; still in flash - and I get a pretty little "operating system updates installed".
3) Removed penguinbaits bootmenu-installer
4) Re-installed penguinbaits bootmenu-installer (took a while.. but still worked fine).
5) Reboot and select internal MMC
6) Boot into internal MMC and get my pretty little "Operating System Updated" message.

And voila - Internal MMC; and Flash; updated and re-loaded bootmenu all without incident and no cloning or recovery necessary...

So... I'm happy.

Re: First Diablo SSU update is out (4.2008.30-2)

Once the update finally showed up I installed it with no problems, however it didn't reboot by itself I had to do it manually. The Map update worked fine also. I can only guess that the only reason it worked okay for me is that I don't live on the wild side, I haven't done much of anything beyond "stock" stuff with it.

never mind, it seems to be unrelated to ssu...

That'd be fanoush's bootmenu and penguinbait's bootmenu .deb.

Re-download and re-run the initfs_flasher and you'll be fine.

Someone up there must like me, because I had a no brainer upgrade and I'm happy with the faster speed of microb. Also, maybe it's because I haven't been paying much attention, but did the upgrade to the map software alter how the main roads, which you had to zoom in closer to even see, now stand out more, ( the main roads seem more obvious) whereas before you had to zoom in all the way or is that the way it's always been?

Why can't I see it on my tablet?

qole 2008-08-12 03:38

Re: First Diablo SSU update is out (4.2008.30-2)

I think the main problem so far has been with people (like me) who don't have enough space for the update. The install will just fail / crash / whatever and leave you in a partly-installed, broken state, often with no clear indication of what just happened or what you should do now. And since it can run out of space at different places in the install process, the failure can look quite different...

If your install fails, and it says (or you suspect) that there's not enough space, hunt around and delete / move stuff (like the demo videos, music, etc, documentation pdf files under MyDocs..., also as root, "apt-get clean" can give you some space) and then gain root and type "apt-get -f install" to see if you can carry on installing.

If you get kicked offline, and you can't get back on, and your install fails, you could be in big trouble... don't reboot! Anyone have any ideas how to get back online?

tso 2008-08-12 03:53

Re: First Diablo SSU update is out (4.2008.30-2)

btw, one way to check how much space is needed is to go into deails on the update entry, then hit the rightmost tap (installing). tere will be a a list of the dependencies the package have, and also a total size.

as an example, gnumeric is listed as 6,3MB. but checking "installing" it says 20,1MB!

anyone feel like checking what it says about the ssu update?

Re: First Diablo SSU update is out (4.2008.30-2)

Ok, after reading so many "warning with running out of space or it will kill your tablet" I have a question: how much free space do you need to update safely? I assume it depends on what you have installed, but some idea of the number would be welcome.

edit: lol, you gave the answer before I could ask the question, thanks

tried an apt-get upgrade - Not enough space,
apt-get clean, then upgraded - Not enough space and couldnt get online and rebooted. Now the N800 remains on the Nokia Logo Screen of Death ... Sigh...

Hope there is an osso command to bring up the network. Or you could just try to browse to a website/email/messenger etc, to see if the connection gets back up again.

Then I had to use my very newest version of the chroot scripts to chroot in. You need the new version, otherwise you could overwrite important files.

The /home/user/.chroot file needs this:
Code:

IMGFILE=/dev/mtdblock4
IMGFS=jffs2

It will fail to mount the partition, but you've already mounted it manually, and then it works.

I was able to do apt-get -f install in the chroot, and it installed then rebooted automatically... back to my flash partition! Yay!

Note, I cleared some space to get it to finish the install... You'll need to do it too, if you're in this boat.

Hi,

I've done successfully all steps up to changing the .chroot file.

What would be the next step?

I've tried /sbin/debian and gives the error:
Code:

Setting up the chroot...

/sbin/debian: line 112: gxmessage: not found

Thanks.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that

Just a note, if you are unsure about space,

mkdir /media/mmc2/cache/apt/archives
rm /var/cache/apt/archives
ln -s /media/mmc2/cache/apt/archives /var/cache/apt/archives

(It's a little trick I learnt from http://mariusv.wordpress.com/2008/05...sant-surprise/ when installing *everything* (a total chinook to diablo install ;)))

just run "chroot /debian"

Well, looks like the ISP jumped the gun a bit on the server move (location, not hardware, yet, but it was supposed to be tomorrow). Everything should be back up later today.

The good news is this is the first step for getting the new servers for maemo.org in place. ;)

Re: First Diablo SSU update is out (4.2008.30-2)

I had some problems with the update. Long time ago, I had the bad idea of running an apt-get remove gizmo-installer. For some reason in the dependency handling of apt-get, apt-get kindly suggested me to remove some packages that were no longer required:
Code:

initfs-flasher kernel-diablo-flasher flash-and-reboot
oops... I said yes. This screwed up the update: only part of the updates were installed yesterday on my N810, and the system did not reflash nor reboot itself. I struggled for a while in the attempt to re-install the packages that I had accidentally removed, and in the end I had to go for a quicker fix: reflashing the tablet. Has anybody else incurred in the accidental removal of these packages? Is there a smarter fix than what I did?
