cybernut
- right click (or hold if you are doing it on the N8x0) - save file (use internal memory).
Open file manager and go to the location where you saved the .deb file. Execute (it will open application manager and install the package).

What a mess in here :)

I think the real bad idea is to have osso-software-version-rx*4 not installed. It's a kind of central package.. 618 dependencies!!!
And this whole thread is about upgrading this exact package, so the people who don't have it, erm.. can't uprade it!?

People who have "not installable" or who want to know if this or that is installed can try
apt-cache policy <packagename> to track a bit more their problem. This command tells you which version you have installed and to which version apt-get can upgrade it, and from where.

apt-cache policy osso-software-version-rx44

Concerning size problems, I just saw this maemo-specific tag:
"Maemo-Required-Free-Space: 20480"
Looks like that was not enough or not used at all..

GA,
Thanks for clarifying the download issue. If it downloads to mmc2 on an N810 I can see a problem.. that's the internal flash and it could well be pretty full.. (presumably it doesn't automatically download to mmc2 on an N800 if there's no card in there..?)

Is it possible tp upgrade the partition on my sd if I can no longer boot from it?
I think thats the problem. After the failed update my n800 wont boot to my sd anymore. I can only boot from flash and I have already updated the bootmenu, but still no go. When I boot to flash I can see my sd card and read/write to it just fine. All my files are there.

I'm booted to SD as I post this.
...the worst that will happen is I will need to redo the initfs_flash.

Just a note.. this is the reason in my steps posted previously that I decided to upgrade the SD first...

While reloading the bootmenu is a minimal problem - having to do it twice is just an annoyance. If you install to SD first; wipe your boot menu; you'll boot into flash. Then install in flash (before fixing boot menu) .. tablet reboots and you're still in flash.

Then you fix the boot menu.. and both SD and Flash are updated with only one bootmenu fix. If you do it the other way (flash first).. you end up fixing boot menu after flash to boot to sd.. then fixing bootmenu after SD to get back into SD.

I am using the bootmenu and was booted from SD when I did the update. How do I get the new initfs/rootfs?

I do have a recient backup and could always boot to flash. Run the update a second time and reclone to SD and restore. Is there a better way?

I got the new update (or at least my control panel says that I did), but I too did not get the new version of the initfs, and my bootmenu remains intact. Does anyone know what changes were made in the initfs? Do I need the new one? Why? And how do I get it, now that the update is done and nothing is showing as needing an update? Perhaps I already have it, and I need to run that flash-and-reboot thing?

I'll read those posts about cloning the OS before trying that, next time I'll have a full backup before upgrading.

From GA:

You know, I thought I understood multi-booting with multiple partitions, but I guess I don't. If I run the SSU while booted to my SD partition, why would the SSU have any knowledge of my flash partition? Why would I need to bother with Fanoush's initfs_flash on the SD parition?

I's there a howto or wiki that describes what a NIT does when it powers up?

My simplistic understanding is:
* The hardware looks to a hard-wired address where it finds the equivalent of 'bios" and executes it.

* The "bios" performs basic hardware checks and then passes control to a boot loader. Code from the boot loader locates the kernel, loads it and executes it to start the boot proper. (In a non-cloned NIT it would just load the kernel and start the inits for the rootfs, inittab, etc. In a cloned NIT it displays the boot menu)

*After the kernel loads, it initializes device drivers etc. Once it is completely initialized, it finds the root filesystem, mounts /.

What am I missing?

Thanks for the hand-holding;

It doesn't have anything at all to do with your flash partition. initfs, kernel, bootloader and the config are all separate partitions from any rootfs partition you boot from, so when you install the SSU update on the SD partition, it overwrites the bootmenu on your initfs partition again.

Both internal flash and SD use the same initfs, kernel, bootloader and config partitions.

Well, thanks to the currently 292 posts regarding the ssu update, I have sucessfully updated flash and mmc boots. Had lots of errors along the way, but as I read through all of this, managed to slowly but surely get rid of all of them. My eventual fix for at least half of the problems I ran into here? Disable all but the minimal repositories, apt-get clean, install -f, and update. Fixed all of my bugs except for a couple having to do with install tools still showing in applicaiton manager (uninstalled) and some canola bugs (uninstalled and reinstalled) Everything seems stable now, and thanks to everyone who bothered to explain in details the problems they were having, and everyone else who helped explain solutions, reasons, etc...

Ok, completed the SSU to my SD part, boot menu back.

I did a cursory 10 minute Google and ITT search (also looked in the wiki), but did not find an answer to this question.

How do I change my terminal prompt back to what I had before? It now says Nokia-N810-23-14. I knew how to do this two months ago ... rats.

EDIT: Just change the hostname in /etc/hosts (used nano) . The terminal prompt displays \h:\w\$ , from $PS1 variable.

Thanks,

Steve

How long does the update take? I've been stuck on the "Installing" pop up and the progress bar hasn't moved in hella days... (about 15 minutes ;) )

Edit: Well the whole thing took approximately 50 minutes... it seems to get stuck about halfway through, then again when the progress bar is full before its reboot. Have patience, for me everything went well and I received the "Successful Upgrade" pop-up after it rebooted itself.
The new version is also reported in the "About Product" screen from control panel.

I also have had troubles with the update. I'm not surprised, it's no big deal. I'm devoting my life to making my N800 work, so I have no reason to complain. Just don't tell me to get a life. That option has been deleted.

Re: First Diablo SSU update is out (4.2008.30-2)

The Diablo upgrade actually fixed my x-server problems which had knocked out my app manager(something to do with advanced backlight/regular light/sound and omweather)!!! :) Then it borked my dual boot!! :( Got dual boot back following steps here!!! :))) Pretty easy. OK now the hard part, after reading about 450 posts in 4 threads I still don't understand how to put qwerty's mmc speed/rotation from here (http://www.mediafire.com/?yzgm9ywyity) into this new Diablo/dual boot.

Now I keep losing the dual boot when I try to put qwerty's mmc speed/rotation on new Diablo/dual boot. I've read that you need to use new flasher then put the bootable dual boot back in. How do you do those steps in order. I know I'm close. Also can Brontides steps (/usr/sbin/osso-mmc-mount.sh, and noatime fix for /usr/sbin/mmc-mount.) be added afterwards into this new Diablo upgrade without borking?? I ask because the Nokia flasher no longer works. TIA, Dan

Wifi powersaving. Make XChat idle in a semi-active channel or something and you'll be set.

But for idle times for WLAN idle times it says unlimited. And for my accounts (I have GC+Gizmo) It's always on green. It could be getting a weak signal, though it was working from this distance before. (and I can still use the tablet just fine).

Wifi Power Saving Mode (or PSM) is not related to timeout periods.

Hmm, any reason why it changed? (Tried your suggestion and it worked). And I don't have to necessarily use xchat, I can use anything that would keep Wifi power saving mode from kicking in right. So something like Pidgin would work.

It didn't change, your network usage changed.

My network usage changed? I'm doing the same thing I've been doing before. Using my desktop in Linux with TB, FF, and Pidgin open. While I transfer files to and from my tablet (which usually just stays on the home screen).

Though the internet has been slow today strangely. But I don't think that would impact the network's speed though. Unless my sister was doing something on the internet..

The flash-and-reboot did NOT fix the initfs here (still has old initfs and kernel - control panel says I have updated). Do anyone have a pointer to the boot real sequence? If I have a good description of how the n800 is booting and what links it has to the internal flash when booted from SD I can probably figure out how to fix this...

Hello ALL
I'm somewhat confused right now because my issues just now started happening:
Here's a list of them:

1. Everything is working "EXCEPT" my internet connection, but the LAN reports its connecting and working fine. I get and IP/SUBNET/etc
2. When I try and got on to the web I get an error msg: Memory low (even when the device is plugged in
3. Can't send/receive emails
4. Control Panel OS Version reads: NULL (but didn't yesterday) - WLAN: OK - Bluetooth: OK
I'm able to take Screenshoots, but can't post because I can't get the tablet to connect.

Any suggestions? Before I re-Flash?

Re: First Diablo SSU update is out (4.2008.30-2)

I have small problem with booting from internal card. (I try to read this topic and use search).

I do as in this post:
Code:

1) I booted to internal MMC; saw the update notification.. went ahead and updated..it warned me i would reboot - and I already knew my bootmenu was going to be hosed. So; it gets done; without error; and reboots.
2) Tablet reboots into flash on it's own... I run application manager and check for updates.. install 2 new updates... tablet reboots again; still in flash - and I get a pretty little "operating system updates installed".
3) Removed penguinbaits bootmenu-installer
4) Re-installed penguinbaits bootmenu-installer (took a while.. but still worked fine).
5) Reboot and select internal MMC

So menu appears. When i select booting from internal card, I get message (as usual): "booting from immc2...". But after several seconds tablet restarted.
How can I fix this?

I have a really random and trivial bug since I installed this update.

For some reason my battery icon does not animate while charging any more.

Its no big deal, but I’m just curious if this happening for anybody else? Is there a way to turn the "battery filling up" animation on and off?

Re: First Diablo SSU update is out (4.2008.30-2)

worked for me - back online booting with updated SD partition, but I did read through all the thread.

quick summary of avoiding problems and the explicit steps:
  1. backup existing bootmenu.conf
    Code:

    cp /mnt/initfs/bootmenu.conf /media/mmc2/
  2. be in 'blue pill' mode so app manager not confused
  3. do the update from sd partition (auto reboots)
  4. boot from internal flash
  5. confirm 'blue pill' mode again
  6. update again
  7. grab fanoush's initfs_flasher
    Code:

    wget http://fanoush.wz.cz/maemo/initfs_flasher.tgz
do this because he has added the links already, or update your old install as per http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...1&postcount=24
  8. unpack, cd, recover bootmenu.conf, flash (auto reboot)
    Code:

    tar xzf initfs_flasher.tgz
    cd initfs_flasher/
    cp /media/mmc2/bootmenu.conf .
    ./initfs_flash

remaining niggles:
  • my battery icon does still show the 'recharge' animation
  • haven't fixed /etc/hostname yet
  • app manager shows 2 'Nokia System Software Updates' entries, but I presume this is because I need to set Distribution to '/' instead of './' in order to get it to refresh. deleted the one that said /diablo/, kept the one that said /diablo-1/. still had to change './' to '/' or it comes up 'failed to refresh'. (my isp ??? no other itt posts seem to mention)

well, just in case I wasn't the last to upgrade...

rob.

hostname I doubt will be updated. It does not belong to any package. Infact, come think of it, the diablo I was using before it was released had no hostname file at all. I [had then] installed it on top of chinook and the chinook hostname file got deleted.
