Why anyone would want a phone the size of a N8x0 (or the iPhone for that matter) is beyond me. I prefer a small, light and simple phone, giving me the option to bring which devices I need. If the N900 (or whatever they choose to call it) becomes a phone, I won't replace my N800.

I think the perfect thing would be a tiny battery-powered bluetooth modem for whatever EVDO / WIMAX / Future-Tech high speed wireless network you want, something like my Holux M1000 GPS unit. Pairs with any bluetooth-enabled device, gives you high-speed internet if you're in the coverage area. See my post above for why it will never exist.

Until I got my n810 I was of exactly the same mind. I love my Samsung R500. With extended battery I can go easily 5 days without a charge. It is small, great reception, best phone I have ever had.

I used to carry a Palm as a PDA, and often lugged my laptop everywhere. Now my laptop stays behind; I keep a mini-keyboard in the trunk for those times I need to do a bunch of typing.

Now that I see the power of the n810, I have a dream - to carry just one device, that has the power of the n810 and is also a phone.

I already carry both the n810 and phone everywhere. I never carry just the phone or just the n810. The n810 is not so large that I could not hold it to my ear.

If it had a phone option that could be purchased separately, and the device was no bigger, then we both could have what we want. You could continue to carry two gizmos, and I could carry just one.:D

The new Gigabyte m528 is getting close to what I would like Nokia Nxx to go except I would prefer an arm processor, a stronger graphics chip set and a real camera PHONE, a real GPS chip set and of course two full sized sdhc card slots. TV/HDMI ports and two USB ports out would be even better.

Bad time to buy the N95. The N96 is coming out in a month (half septembre). Expect N95 prices to drop...

Supposedly, the M528 will have one regular USB port and one mini-USB port (client). I think it may only have 1 micro SD slot, but I could be wrong about that. The price quoted by UMPCportal, if correct, has dropped again and will be under $700 USD--$689, supposedly. I've been holding off getting an N810; wanting to see what initial users think of the M528. I'm hoping the shipping date of mid-September doesn't slip. Specifically, I want to see if GPS works out of the box (UMPCfever has been testing the Aigo MID and it appears that there are glitches with its GPS) and also would like to know how well WIFI (will be SDIO on the M528) picks up signals and how well bluetooth (will be via USB I/F) performs.

If I can go with a N810 I can go with an EEE too as my pants are too small for a N810. I go with a backpack and then it's no problem to take an EEE too.
However, the N810 is a very special device which I like. But it's far far away from being a convergence device. It's the playground for Nokia. And sadly, it's not that 'open' how I like it. Personally, I don't like the way of Debian...

I still stand by the N95/N96 as the perfect convergence device.

It has its compromises and certainly the N8XX has a bigger screen, touch, better browser however it also has its compromises big time mostly the fact that its has no phone capability when you are outside of wifi range which is most often for most people.

With the N8XX I am forced to carry around a phone, and a camera.

With the N9X I do not need to carry anything else at all.

Thats just my story and this thread started because I was so pumped about the N9X not because I wanted to put down the N8XX. I love the N8XX.

I am just much more supper pumped about the N9X right now when it comes to just having

"one device to rule them all"
"one device to rule my life"

I agree, the N95 (either N95-1 or N95-2) are for me too is the best convergence device out there. This little fella has been with me for over a year now and with the constant stream of new apps and hacks out there now it just continues to get better and more and more indispensable, the installed Garmin XT sat nav navigated me flawlessly through Italy a couple of weeks ago.

By the way the N96 is not the successor to the N95 and is actually a little less capable in some areas although its internal memory capacity rocks.

That's definitely the conclusion I've also reached. I'm going to order an n810 today, and when I can find a good price on an n82, I'll get one of them.
