Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
Ive decided to leave N8XX devices alone because I have found the best convergence device on the planet.
Its not perfect. The N8XX has a better browser, but boy is it close. The device is the Nokia N95 8G. Ive owned this device for 3 months now and until yesterday when I installed Quickoffice Premier and QuickAccess, I did not realize how much a true convergence device it is. Ive thrown every complex spreadsheet and word doc at it and it handles it for viewing and editing. Ive taken it on my family vacation and took many, many 5Mb pictures and 640X480 videos. I make phonecalls on it and browse the web with flash. Its tiny, compared to the N8XX. Im out of here guys and will likely never return. All I need is an igo Stowaway keyboard and I am able to, with small compromises, do anything practical. Goodbye guys. |
Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
I'll just quote someone.
"Why do people think anybody cares what device they've decided to use?" In other words, wrap it up, happy thanksgiving and a jolly good ride to you ! |

Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
Actually, I DO care to hear these stories.. at any moment, any of us could be that guy. But I'm not sure I understand the way he framed it. It sounded a bit like he was thumbing his nose at people reading Tablet related stuff.
Personally, the N95 just isn't the convergence device for me. It's a GREAT device, mind you--but what I want would require it to be a LOT more open and a LOT more hackable than it can be--which is where the Internet Tablets come in. I need something that is more like the middle-ground between the laptop computer and the N95. Glad you found your niche product though! It's hella awesome when you've found something that just CLICKS. That's how I felt when I got the N800 ages ago. :) Goodbye.. and thanks for visiting. |

Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
he he,
thought the same when I bought my E61 2 years ago, than I bought the n800 an saw the LIGHT :D I worried about my tablet when I upgraded to the e71. Surprisingly I still browse the web on the tablet... bye |
Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
just one thing to add - i don't see my n800 as converged device. it's no phone, no camera. i like it that way.

Symbian devices are very hard to program. Yes, you can run apps programmed in Python on them, but it's not like the N8x0 platform: for any complicated application, you gotta do C++. And that's hard. Even with the Carbide IDE and simulators, there's a steep curve to get applications to run. Also, there isn't the contributing community around Symbian devices as there is around Linux and Maemo. So I'll stick with my N8x0 devices and keep hacking. |
Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
I have a N810 and a N82 (="N95 in candy bar"). While the functionality of the two overlap, they complement each other really well:
N82: Phone, 2G/EDGE, 3G/HDSPA, Calendar & Contacts, FM radio, PERFECT GPS and Maps (with Voice routing free for 90? days), Nokia Sports Tracker, J2ME GMail, a webbrowser that is quite ok for pressing needs on the go (quickly download a weather radar image) and some google reader-based surfing N810: Internet everywhere in perfection, touchscreen, keyboard, great OS, ever expanding playground. Media Player. So while the N82 covers the "serious needs" on-the-go, the N810 is for "enjoyment and fun" while being settled a bit more. |
Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
I totally agree with twaelti,
Quote:
N8XX isn't a convergence device. It's what comes after the subnotebook/webtop (as in: desktop > laptop > webtop > handtop/IT). Actually I owned an N95 8GB, but sold it for an E51 which has become the perfect companion to my N810: E51 (lightweight, small, multiple connectivity, FM radio, bluetooth tethering), use for phone calls + quick browsing (Google Reader mobile / Twitter web mobile / Gmail mobile mail check); while I use my N810 when I'm being able to "settle a bit more": in a starbucks, waiting room, train or whatever ("real" Web browsing, office tools -esp. thanks to Debian in chroot-, development, games, video/music entertainment). With that couple (E51+N810), most of my needs are covered, wherever I go, with minimum weight/space. What I'd love the N900 to be is an N810 (on steroids?) with TV-Out, USB host (without hacks whatsoever) & SDHC slot (with no max-size, so that we can have a 16 or 32GB SDHC card sitting inside comfortably, dualbooting Maemo & Debian to satisfy our geek instinct). Until then, I'll enjoy my "convergence duo"! Cheers, Max |
Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
Sorry I did not mean to sound as if I am thumbing my nose.
The N8XX is awesome however I became tired of needing 3 devices all the time. You all know we have an N8XX, laptop, and a cellphone. Now, with the N95, I only need a laptop. Also, I am looking at a consumer device and not a hackable device I can code on. With my kids I only have time to keep up with learning the latest Oracle products and dev tools. I will continue to visit here and was just kidding. This stuff is all just a lifestyle choice anyway. |
Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
Anyone have a use stowaway keyboard they want to sell ?

eh, don't let it get to you. I recently sold my IT after I bought a HTC/Sprint Mogul and started using winMobile (and like it) so now I am the devil incarnate.
I still like the IT concept though, and hope nokia can make something really great the next time around. |

Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
Also, I like the N95 because its so small and I wear trim cut European style pants.
E71 is big. E90 is big. No other phone has the browser, the camera, the video recorder, the Word/Excel capability, the PDA, small size, etc., capabilities btw, using Word in page layout mode zoomed in is really awesome on this thing. |
Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
Its really a lifestyle choice.
Its like I like Vanilla you like Chocolate stuff. |

johnx, do you use a stowawy keyboard ?

I would like to say that they've done a modestly decent job of that so far but I've become a bit jaded after having problems with obtaining parts for repairs and with their blatantly ridiculous statements to customers in the open-source crowd (their main crowd with the Tablets) about needing to embrace closed-source and closed-architecture... worse still, claiming OGG to be encumbered with patent issues. I feel that Nokia doesn't seem to 'get it' and it doesn't feel as if they're actually listening to us--just doing enough to get us to buy tablets.. but just barely. As I'd said earlier--any of us could be that guy that found something else that was even more suitable and jump ship. I, for one, am really excited about this new OpenPandora portable! I REALLY love the form factor and features... even a video out, for crying out loud! LOVE! http://pandorawiki.org/Pandora in case you want to check it out. It's not out yet--so I can't buy one.. but if it were out right now, I'd easily use that instead of my N800, from what I've read. Has Nokia been watching the 'What do you want to realistically see in the N900?' thread? Hint, hint. Getting back to the main point about sounding like an ad--if Nokia had a community representative to reach out to the open source crowd and did just that little tiny bit more.. they could very easily become the new Asus eee in sales and popularity. Just listen more to the community--good and bad, promote your product as the result of what people have been asking for--fill that niche, and then fix your support and supply problems--make replacement parts available and produce more units when you see demand uptick. That all said--I do LOOOOVE my N800! :) I just gave me old one to my sister in AZ, several coworkers and friends have bought one because they see that I've had positive experiences with it and I know any more who want one--there just aren't enough out there to sell to them. By contrast, the N810 isn't what they wanted. OK.. there we go.. let's see what you all say. :) |

Now that I think about it, I'm glad the tablets didn't come out in the 80s, since pants were way too tight for them. :) |

laugh out loud.
Tried to just post "lol" however it was too short and would not post. |

Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
I still just want my n810 to also be a phone!
Waaahh! Whine! I *know* that the newest software-configurable hardware DSP chipsets can do 802.11a/b/g/n and also do the cell phone stuff. Apple and Samsung have these in the iPhone and the Instinct. Please Please Nokia - make the N9xx a phone! My pants are falling off from all the holstered stuff! I weary of having to bluetooth pair with my n810 when I can't find WiFi. Gnash complain rant! $teve |

I personally would rather bluetooth my N900 up to a phone which I can easily replace as I upgrade to new technologies or when I move carrier. But anyway.. there's a whole other thread for this conversation.. and it's been played out pretty well. (Check for the 'What do you realistically want in an N900" thread.) As for pockets.. ALL of mu jeans, khakis and pants all have cargo pockets on the sides and I keep my N800 in my left cargo pocket (and a Nintendo DS in my right cargo pocket). :) |
Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
danramos, Im sorrry but I couldnt disagree with you more.
If the N900 has GSM phone tech build in than hands down it will rule the world. With its powerful OS and browser nothing would beat it. If it has 5-7MB camera and 640X480 video, then it will rule the universe. Sorry, there is just such a small market for an internet tablet thus the N8XX is small compared to a device that literally has everything the N8XX has plus, phone and camera tech. I'de be so excited at such a device I'de buy one for my bathroom, bedroom, work, car, and every other place I go. Nokia, if youre listening, I'de just go crazy and buy 10 just for fun. I would sleep with all of them at night and build a doll house for them and just play around with them. Ide take them to the beach. Therefore Nokia, N9XX + phone tech + camera/video = Global/Universal Domination. |
Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
I will not buy a NIT with a GSM phone.
If I'm going to be chained to a carrier and paying a monthly fee I'm going to buy an iPhone. |

The hardware is NOTHING without software. And this is where Maemo still lacks. In my limited view, one aspect of this is the high barrier of entry to software development on the device. (Nokia: take a look at MS Visual Studio and the Compact Framework...) |
Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
Now if you could, with a single sub 2 seconds action, switch the E71 on and off as a bluetooth HID keyboard for the N800 ... then you had this other kind of convergence.

brontide, are you saying the iphone OS is better then the N8XX OS ? If so then I disagree here also.

If the n9xx becomes a fee based device ( GSM ) then it's utility diminishes significantly for me. Like I said at that point I might as well buy the iPhone and get *gasp* support for my phone. Since, for me, the utility of a phone is in making and receiving calls without thinking about the unit. Based on the QA of the nXXX series I have low expectations for a phone based n9xx. |
Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
twaelti, iphone has sooo many apps that I would guess are just junk.
I'de be very happy to buy 20 N9XX devices that had phone and camera tech with the existing N8XX software as it is now. I would have any regrets. |
Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
Youre saying you would get an iphone and pay for the service but with the phone capable N9XX you would not pay for the service.
At least it sound like thats what you would do. |
Re: Found perfect convergence device. Its not a N8XX.
The iphone with phone tech and service does not compare to a N9XX device with phone tech and service.
