What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

I just bought a used N810 and I wasn't paying attention to the sale post and after paying for it, noticed it doesn't come with the headset. Which makes the device nearly useless for me, as I was primarily purchasing this to use with Skype so I wouldn't be tied to my laptop. I have a bluetooth headset for my mobile phone, a Motorola H505. Can I unpair this from my phone and pair it to the N810 or can I have it paired to both?

If I need to purchase a headset, what do you recommend and where can I get one from? I don't mind a corded headset.

Thanks!

hello!
I think you can't couple this BT headset at the same time to your handy and n810, that means one of the both devices must be off ....
you can go under this web-site http://www.nokiausa.com/A4431196 and select what you want and buy it then under Ebay.

Re: What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

Thanks. I'd be okay with removing the bluetooth device from my phone, as I hardly ever need it with my phone if it's going to work with the N810. I can talk on the phone without a headset, but it'd be hard to do with skype!

Re: What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

Far as i know. BT headset should work just fine with skype.

Thanks everyone! I won't get it for a while...it's being mailed on Monday and first has to go to my mom's house for her to forward it to me, so I'll let you know if my bluetooth headset works when I get it :D

did it work??

Re: What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

My N810 came with a wired stereo headset with microphone. The N810 without a headset works like a speaker phone with Skype. It uses the microphone in the base and the stereo speakers. My Plantronics 655 BT headset paired with the N810 and works well.

Re: What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

You may want to look at the Plantronics .Audio 910 Bluetooth Headset. It is recommended by Skype as Skype users can receive notification of incoming calls & answer/end calls remotely via the headset. It offers Multipoint technology that seamlessly transitions between Bluetooth enabled softphones, cell phones, and desk phones. It also comes with a Bluetooth USB dongle and Plantronics PerSonoCall software that allows you to use the headset to connect to Skype on a PC without bluetooth. Here is a review by Skype http://share.skype.com/sites/skypege...antronics.html and another http://www.legitreviews.com/article/479/1/ and one more http://laptoplogic.com/reviews/detail.php?id=161 which I offer as I don't own a 810 or the headset...yet. Should you try the headset, I would be interested in your comments.

This is the cheapest wired headset you can find for the N810:

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.7396

Even though they say Nokia on them, they're of lower quality than the original headset that comes with the N810... but for $3 shiped, you can afford to replace it.

Re: What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

I was able to pair the Motorola H505, but it's fuzzy and kept breaking up when I was trying to Skype with my mom...though that could be a result of her mobile phone being used at work, I'm not sure. I'll keep on trying to test it. It's really going to annoy me if I have to spend more money to get anew bluetooth headset.

Re: What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

I just picked up a VoiceStar VS700 BT headset.
It's at Radio Shack on clearance starting today for $9.97.
(I'm an associate so after my employee discount is was 6 bucks and change last night.)

As expected, it's not super duper clear, but it paired effortlessly, worked fine with Skype right away, and even passes the rest of the devices audio through.
While it sounded really bad I was able to listen to some internet radio through the thing.

Impressive!

I imagine a "good" headset or one that does stereo would be a GREAT match-up!

Re: What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

I tried using the H505 again with a skype-to-skype call and my boyfriend complained that he could hear the static and it was hard to hear me.

*sigh*

Will a regular cell phone corded headset work? I don't like the kind that have the dangling microphone, but if my old plantronic will work, I'll just try to dig that out...

Thanks. I couldn't find the plantronics one I used to have, so I'm thinking about purchasing this one ( http://www.amazon.com/Nokia-Over-Ear...0715969&sr=8-4. ) It doesn't list the N810, but if it's a standard headset, it should work, right?

Re: What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

I can think of no reason why any wired headset designated for Nokia wouldn't work. The key would be the jack size, 3.5mm or 2.5mm. The N810 is 3.5mm

My headphones work, but the 3.5mm connector gets a bit deep stuck. It is difficult to get it out of the NIT. It isn't a big problem if you'd just leave the connector attached, and I don't know if this occurs with wired headphones.

Re: What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

The Nokia stereo headset that came with my N810 is an HS-48 plugs in removes smoothly. You may find that the mechanical fit will be smoother after some use. All plus of the same barrel size will have differently shaped knobs on their ends. Mechanical tolerances aren't critical for these jacks and some combinations of plug and jack will fit a little different when they have different manufacturers.

AnnaOnTheMoon 2008-09-07 02:18

Re: What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

Unfortunately, it didn't specify if it was 3.5mm or not....hope it is because dealing with my bluetooth is really driving me crazy. It's way too fuzzy. I think it's just a cheap BT headset to be honest...it never worked right with my mobile, either.

fragos 2008-09-07 02:33

Re: What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

From what I can see, Nokia has standardized on 3.5mm.

Be VERY CAREFUL when going to Deal Extreme.

Due to their price structure I just went there today to buy one pair of low cost In-Ear Stereo Earbuds 1 pair

They were supposed to be $3.83 @.

By the time I got what I considered the minimal adequate packing materials (3 more pair In-Ear Stereo Earbuds , AMP RJ45 Network Crimp Plugs (100-pcs retail box set), a RJ45 Network Cable Crimp with Cable Cutter 2-set Toolkit, some USB adapters, etc) it came up to $46.

And don't get me started about all their cables and chargers!!:D:D

I ordered the headset off Amazon, along with a gender bender, and a micro-to-usb plug (yes, I realize I technically don't need both....) and spent a total of $20, including shipping from three different sellers on Amazon.

I don't think anybody has mentioned the EASIEST SOLUTION:

You can use a standard set of stereo earphones, plus the built-in microphone.
Thats almost as good as a full headset.

Apparently they don't. I just returned from a trip to my packages, and it is the wrong size.

Hello. I just received the VS700 as well and I am trying to pair it to my PS3. However, I have no instructions on how to put the headset into pairing mode so the PS3 can find it. Can you tell me how to do that? Thanks!

Re: What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

I've been thinking of getting a motorola S705, as it can pair with multiple devices, does A2DP/stereo and has built-in FM radio.

Means I can leave it connected to my mobile phone and the tablet and listen to music at the same time. I haven't found anything else as versatile!

They regularly come up cheap on ebay as it's getting to be an older model, retail price seems to be about GB£33.

Anna, this fellow is correct. You may use ordinary, wired headphones, and the Nokia's internal microphone if you wish. I do this sometimes with Skype and Gizmo on the N800. It should work the same on the N810.

I have used a Motorola BT headset (HS850) with success with my N800. Sound quality is acceptable but that is subjective.

Using your N810 with Skype shouldn't be frustrating or a substandard experience. People I speak to using my Nokia N800 and Skype say I sound fantastic when I call them. Voice quality exceeding that of a cellphone call. BE sure your Internet connection isn't being pushed to where there might be a bandwidth bottleneck (shut off any bittorrent apps, don't stream TV at the same time). Don't expect things to sound good if you are outdoors and there is any amount of a breeze or wind, or background noise. My HS850 is horrible if there is a breeze. Don't have your N810 running other applications. Just run Skype when using BlueTooth and Skype because the CPU is near max'd out with all the wireless that it's being asked to process ( WiFi and BT ). Don't run the microwave oven when involved in a Skype call on the N8x0. It can interfere with anything around 2.4ghz (which both WiFi and BT use).

Hope this helps.

Re: What Kind of Headset Do I Need?

I just got a Plantronics Voyager 855 which is a nice headset that can be a normal mono earpiece but has a second earphone you can plug into it to make it stereo. It supports A2DP and is really small and light. It works great with my phone and my N810.

It cannot, however, be actively connected to both at the same time. If both it and BT on either my phone or N810 are on and it isn't actively connected, pushing its button connects it. If the headset and both other devices are on, doing that will only ever connect it to whichever one it connected to last.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be possible to get around that; it sacrifices the Voyager 815's (which looks just like it) ability to connect to two for A2DP.

Still, I use VOIP and my phone very differently, and really have no need to be able to interchange between the two rapidly.

If you want the other one, you should be able to initiate the connection from the phone, instead of from the headset.
Also, headsets should be able to simultaneously connect to HFP and A2DP device,
e.g. a phone and an MP3 player. Phone call will interrupt music.

I bought one off ebay for GB£12 inc postage. The FM radio is very good when used with external headphones - it has a 3.5mm stereo jack - I have some GB£30 Sennheisers from years ago which sound excellent.

Unfortunately I was a bit over-optimistic over its ability to handle multiple devices. It will pair with two devices independently, one A2DP and one SCO (mono audio). So, I could use it with tablet and mobile phone at the same time but only if tablet is running A2DP hackery.

This may sound silly, but I am not sure if the mic from my Nokia N82 works with Skype/N810. I have made some calls, but how do I know my voice is being picked up by the headset mic and not the internal N810 mic? It is guaranteed to work?

Best indication is that the speakers are turned off. I've tested mine with the recorder with the speakers and internal mic, headset that came with the N810 and with a Plantronics Bluetooth headset. All three options worked correctly for me.
