New Tablet This Year?

Does anyone know if there is any chance Nokia is releasing the next tablet this year (N900)?

I heard maybe in Sept. but I haven't seen any evidence of that and now NokNok.tv is saying there won't be anything new till next year Feb.

http://noknok.tv/news/next-new-nseri...february-2009/

I hope that isn't the case.

I think the only answer to that is wait until OSiM/Maemo Summit. Before then its all speculation.

So I guess I should wait till Sept. 20th?

I think that's the only way we are going to find out about freemantle and any proposed new hardware.

Meh, it'll still be speculation after the Summit, I'm sure. Just a few more clues.

At least we should get to see freemantle hence the way we will interact with the new hardware even if we don't see the device in the flesh. I'm sure clues will come out and its surprising what you can get out of PR guys after plying them with alcohol.

I know nothing of NokNok.tv, but I find that in general, when people make some general statement about Nokia's N-series, they're talking about the phones. Nokia may have put the tablets in the same room, but the cool kids don't let them sit at their table.

Re: New Tablet This Year?

noknok... or what ever it is... seems to be talking about N-Series "PHONES"... not the tablets.

Just an observation...

Omega

And suddenly the people with a helpful tag "I'm a Nokia PR" are well over a dozen. :D

Meh. Being plied with alcohol by a bunch of geeks? I mean, are there any women even coming to the summit? I guess free-alcohol-is-free-alcohol, but booze isn't that expensive, is it?

The tablets don't want to sit at that table, anyway. The talk is really boring over there.

Whoah. Flashback to high school.

It looks like somebody has already gone ahead and took a sample of the alcohol.

Ever been in Finland? And anyway it's also a matter of selection. With a monopoly there are sooo many things that are not available. For example I suspect that there is a special low quality distillery in Italy that produces the grappa imported by Alko.

Well, then, you go ahead and pretend to be a Nokia PR rep, and let a bunch of developer-types buy you drinks. You're right. That sounds like lots of fun.

No, but it sounds kinda nice.

I see, you're going to play hard-to-get... "If you buy me that 100-year-old cognac, I might remember something more about the new tablet..."

Are you sure we haven't met yet? Yup cognac is my stuff :D

Anyway, regardless of the level of bribery I hope to have some HW to show and possibly demo - it will be built the next week.

Re: New Tablet This Year?

This rumor is coming from Eldar Murtazin - the guy running mobile-review.com. He mentioned this in his N79/N85 preview (last paragraph).
I'm a mod in that forum, and I can tell you that he meant phones. 99.95% sure ;)

That KFlyer guy from the "source" blog of NokNok is just a kid who wants to make himself look more important by quoting a mysterious "trusted source". He's a member of the M-R forums, so...

Other than that, I agree with the wild guesses above - if we're going to see new tablets in 2008, it will almost surely be in Berlin. What better place to do that other than when most vocal tablet evangelists come together?

Well, I suspect the planning boiled down more to "let's announce nifty stuff at OSiM World, and oh, it would be nice if we could gather some of the rabid fans community there for it" than the other way around, but I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. Mostly because I've never been given a horse and wouldn't know what to look for if I were, but still.

In any case, we've known for some time that Ari Jaaksi will be announcing something interesting at OSiM, as the Nokia folks keep going on about how the topics covered in their session will shift massively after Ari's talk. And gee, hasn't Ari said something about steps before?

Wait, wait-- I haven't seen anything first hand. Just presentations and stuff. Hey, that's little more than rumor, right? Like internet stuff. Engadget-grade material. Yeah.

Hee.

Re: New Tablet This Year?

Can I just make up all kinds of stuff and call it rumor to see how far it'll go?

OK.. here's what I want!

The Nokia N1000! It'll be made of a polymorphic metal alloy and it'll have any interface you want and any kind of button placement you want. It'll automatically detect and present you with an appropriate interface depending on what you press up against the screen--your stylus, your finger and various body parts. As well, the screen is also a color light sensor so it doubles as the camera so that it'll work as a web cam, photo camera and page scanner. The battery life is expected to be relatively infinite thanks to a new type of battery, each of which contains an unusually stabilized black hole power source. Once spent, you will need to properly dispose of this power source at your nearest galaxy's central hub to which all things pretty much go for their end of life.

:)

OK.. yah, I'm in a weird mood. :P

Not good enough. It also needs to do face recognition, and if it detects Karel's mug, throw up the appropriate placating apology before shutting itself down in shame :-)

Having waited till the conference....

while there seems to be some good news on what will be included in the next tablet... it seems we are at a loss for any hope of one this year...

Re: New Tablet This Year?

Yup, you've got it right... The short answer to this question is "No" (excluding WE of course).

Re: New Tablet This Year?

There will be no tablet this year. The developer alpha SDK is out November'ish and the Beta, first quarter 2009. From the information we already know, my guess is that the tablet will be released for the consumer in the summer with developers getting theirs around the time of the beta SDK launch.

All guesstimates though!

You can always build your own with a BeagleBoard... Anybody got an N8x0 screen on one of those yet?

EDIT: Oh yeah, it can run Mamona...

Well, the issue is that you'd either need to hook into the leads on the board for the LCD controller before it hits the DVI chip (goodluckwiththat) or find a small LCD that accepts DVI input.
