N8x0 hardware isn't build to watch the usual old and proven video files/formats (MPEG2-PAL/NTSC, MJPEG...). It's an Internet Tablet!

Well, you can easily watch videos on the n810. I've done it already, although as slha89 pointed out, it's not designed for it. For one thing, it eats battery like it's going out of style. So instead of 6 hours of battery, you're lucky to get 3. Also, you need to convert all your files down to 480x320, 768k bitrate @ 25 frames, 44100 sample rate with mp3 audio at 128k.

If you use "Any Video Converter" (it's a free program) you can batch convert nearly any video format down to the right format. It's even got an Nokia Nseries option on it, but I've found that the custom avi works better as it gets the proper balance of quality over performance. The Nseries option goes with slightly lighter settings for a minor performance improvement, with a slight quality hit.

It's only really a good idea to use the N810 for watching video if that's the only thing you're taking with you. If you can bring a PMP, use that instead for watching video.

mplayer works fine for me, i watch series all the time on my n800 with no problems.... standard dvdrip episodes - 175meg 22mins, 350meg 44mins........ 700mb dvdrip movies are fine too........ i dont know why people keep saying that you need to convert videos

I managed to get mplayer to play the .avi file, but I couldn't figure out how to stop it mid-way since it immediately went full screen. I was looking for entertainment on the long plane ride ahead, but I can just play tetris ;)

Use the physical buttons: full-screen button to toggle fullscreen, +- to control volume, dpad to seek, and the dpad button to play/pause.

I often download ".flv" files off of YouTube to watch on the tablet. There's a thread here in which we're all listing some of our favorite short YouTube clips.

Hey folks.

I've been playing 700MB divx .AVIs on my N810 using mplayer.
I ripped them using Fair Use Wizard at default settings.
Those movies/videos sometimes seem like they are on the verge of skipping, but I've found that if it's the only task my tablet is performing it will settle down and play smoothly.

The .flv stuff from YouTube is flawless, but it's also much lower resolution video, and often in the square aspect ratio as well.

Overall it isn't as strong as I'd like, but it still works fine and hasn't annoyed me yet. (always a good arbiter)

What blew my mind right away was the mYTube application.
It does stuff I was using a Firefox plugin to do on my PC, and in a FAR more refined and elegant manner!

I think the main thing to remember is to make sure that playing video is the only thing your tablet is doing when you are doing it.
That way it can use all the resources available to it to do the job.

I think its pretty pathetic the N810 can't handle divx/xvid files without re-encoding them. I'm coming from the Windows Mobile world and using the TCPMP on my Dell Axim, I could pretty much throw any video file on it and it would play flawlessly. This is with a machine that is made more for business use then for media.

I am afraid that is NOT ALL that correct. Use VCURLs72, you can either stream or dl a copy and play the .avi on the fly without any re-encoding. There are over 100 - 200 clips per channel and makes over 7200+ clips. It would take weeks or months of 24 full time watching to watch them all :), if you so desire. Admittedly, they are not ALL smooth, some are more jumpy than the others.

Another one is more of stream then dl copies, worldtv99, again, no re-encoding is needed.

I also own a Dell Axim and is beautifully/neatly wrapped in the box in the drawer ever since I owned a tablet years ago. BTW, I also use pocketTV to watch .divx on winMobile, only 50 50 chance it is working, re-encode is the way to go. That was also the time when pocketDIVX player started to emerge, I dl and installed and I remember, it never work. All info are 18 months old, though.


I think I watched a lot .avi on my tablet, from 770, N800 to N810. I spend at least 20 - 30 min a day, on the AudioVisual on the tablet, and I have yet to make even 1 re-encoding, so far.
