can't install anything!

hi...its been awhile since i got my n810; immediately updated to diablo...installation of new stuff is impossible...am able to install nothing. if i click on the gizmo or skype icons in menu, installation always aborts with "application package not found"..same story for everything else too. also, going into application manager and updating, doesn't show any updates nor browsing for applications shows anything...where to begin? this is so frustrating! please help...for starters, here is log from application manager hildon-application-manager 2.1.16

Re: can't install anything!

Can you ping those IP's?
Do you have a firewall on the router?

agentsmash 2008-09-07 05:59

Re: can't install anything!

I run into a recursive dependency here....

ping 64.132.49.153
ping: permission denied. (are you root?)

of course, I can't install rootsh until I see the program in the application browser!

Plz continue advising...thanks for your response so far...
still all ears...

Re: can't install anything!

Just try opening one of the above URLs in the browser--no need to use ping.

agentsmash 2008-09-07 07:45

Re: can't install anything!

http://repository.maemo.org/extras/d...lo/Release.gpg : Not Found

http://repository.maemo.org/extras/d...lo/Release.gpg : Authentication box pops up: what to input as username: password?

http://repository.maemo.org/extras/d...el/Packages.gz : Opens the File Download box -> Name: Packages.gz Size: 305kB Asks me to save

So I guess I CAN access the links though some are not found, some ask for authentication and some ask to save a file.

What now?

Thanks!

Re: can't install anything!

the rootsh download worked...sweet! Thanks Faheem...but to continue the above issue(now that I CAN ping)...all packets are lost!
So what could that mean!?
Where do we go from here!?
Thanks in advance!

Re: can't install anything!

What is your current DNS server for the ad hoc connection?

skatebiker 2008-09-07 12:47

Re: can't install anything!

Download the files to your Windows PC and then upload the installer package to the N810 and install it locally.

Re: can't install anything!

To qwerty12: As you know, I connect via ad-hoc connection on my laptop; here are details of all connections:
LAN On my windows vista laptop:
IP address: 69.51.165.22
Subnet mask: 255.255.252.0
IPv4 Default Gateway: 69.51.167.254
IPv4 DHCP Server: 205.215.127.123
IPv4 DNS Servers 205.215.127.123
205.215.64.9
205.215.123.123
205.215.127.203

Wireless on my windows vista laptop

IP address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: (blank)
DNS Server: (blank)

On my N810: since I CAN become root, I launched ifconfig wlan0 to obtain this:
inet addr: 192.168.0.6
Bcast: 192.168.0.255
Mask: 255.255.255.0

PS: Although I can open google.com in the browser, when I ping it, it results in complete loss of all packets!

where from here?

To skatebiker...could you please elaborate more on what you're saying...some of those links lead to gzipped file. Do I keep the gz file on the tablet, do I extract the content? In which case, where am I to put the extracted file?
Thanks in advance to all! This forum rocks!

Re: can't install anything!

Well thanks a lot mikkov but I need just a little more prodding...so how do I fix this? Where do I edit a file/make changes to reflect in the tablet?

mikkov 2008-09-07 18:26

Re: can't install anything!

you could give output of 'cat /tmp/resolv.conf.wlan0'

All I really can say that your ad-hoc connection is not set up correctly. Maybe windows box is not routing packets or it doesn't serve dns address via dhcp. (I have never used connection sharing from windows nor have windows to test.)

Re: can't install anything!

Maybe not a very helpful suggestion, but perhaps you might be able to find a wifi access point in your area & try it from there.
l did find that l had to enable the extras repository to accessa lot of the programs, but the 'basic' stuff liKe sKype just installed straight away for me using a wifi router.

agentsmash 2008-09-07 18:52

Re: can't install anything!

~ $ cat /tmp/resolv.conf.wlan0
domain mshome.net
nameserver 192.168.0.1

Unless you can comment on this and suggest something, I guess I'll just have to try connecting to a regular wireless router and see where things go from there.

In that, in turn, I run into another problem:
Plz advise on this:http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...704#post221704

thanks already!

Re: can't install anything!

OK, unless you're running a dns server on your laptop, that's not going to work. BUT, since it is working, at least for google, etc., it's obvious your laptop is running a DNS server; so, I blame caching.

agentsmash 2008-09-07 19:46

Re: can't install anything!

Mea Culpa Caching...but what to do about it?

Benson 2008-09-07 20:28

Re: can't install anything!

Dunno; don't know the first thing about Windows ICS, but you'll have to find some way to flush the DNS cache.

agentsmash 2008-09-07 21:00

Re: can't install anything!

alright..will try

mikkov 2008-09-07 21:14

Re: can't install anything!

Tablet itself is running a caching nameserver too..

You could try this:
1. Select your connection from Control Panel -> Connectivity -> Connections for Edit
2. Goto to Advanced (click two times Next first)
3. Select IP Addresses
4. Uncheck Auto-retrieve DNS
5. Enter DNS server ip from your laptop settings.

agentsmash 2008-09-07 21:25

Re: can't install anything!

followd your advice...can open websites in browser...ping still not working in terminal nor application browser showing any signs of change.
Phew!..I understand you all have been very helpful...I guess I'll just have to try out with a wireless router connection. Then, I'll get back to you all.
Thanks for everybody's help.

Ah, good point; killall -HUP dnsmasq should flush that.

Re: can't install anything!

Alright folks...finally got my tablet to connect to a router; basically status quo...can't still install anything...every and anything finally quits on "application package not found".
One funny thing on X-terminal though, can ping google.com. Can't ping hotmail?? Even more weird since I can surf either via the browser!
All ears....

Partially Solution to "Can't Install Anything!"

Alright so everything, and I mean EVERYTHING works perfectly after downgrading from DIABLO to 2008SE_2.2007.51-3.

I can now download all the apps out there (Skype, Rhapsody, Gizmo, etc) and everything works.
I've switched a couple of times between Diablo and the downgrade: the downgrade ALWAYS works, Diablo leaves me only with partial use(surfing...that's it).

SO some conclusions: the connection via ad-hoc doesn't make any difference(still using ad-hoc with the downgraded N810).

Something messes up after upgrading to Diablo...what?
Any help figuring this out would be great...I might start a new thread for the same.
Thanks for everybody's help, though I'm still on the lookout for help that'll llet me live the Diablo nirvana.

Agent Smash.
