Dropbox is out!

http://blog.getdropbox.com/?p=13

But it is getting crushed by the digg effect.

I have been a beta user for a while & I am very happy with it. I use it at work/home & with all my family members.

Now that they have a linux client & an "Ipod interface" (whatever that is) I wonder if this is something we could use?

Thoughts?

Looks just like Windows Office Live Workspace.

Its totally unclear what you are talking about so I did some searching.

Here is a (recent) Google cache of the default home page of getdropbox.com.

Apparently it is a framework to easily sync, share, and backup data.

Does it work on the NIT?

EDIT: No, there isn't, but the source is there and there are packages for Ubuntu as well. Question is, can it cleanly cross-compile to ARM, and can the dependancies be fullfilled.

Dependencies (from their website):
  • GTK 2.12 or higher
  • GLib 2.14 or higher
  • Nautilus 2.16 or higher
  • Libnotify 0.4.4 or higher
  • Wget 1.10 or higher
Nautilus is the only one likely to be an issue, though I haven't checked versions.

I doubt it would work on the tablet, though it would be very cool if it did. It's still an awesome service though. It's just what I've been looking for. I look forward to never losing a file ever again.

That is how I've been using it on my n810 so far. I have read a few things over on the beta testers forum about a python cli but I don't know how this works in with the linux version as I have only been using the mac & windows clients.

As soon as some of the digg traffic dies down, I'll see if I can find out anything as well as reaching out to the dropbox team about perhaps an NIT optimized "view".

The file versioning alone has saved my bacon at work. I would love to be able to sync across all my platforms!

Guys, this thing is integrating in the different OSes file managers and automatically syncs your files from the server... So, it won't be easy to port - relies heavily on Nautilus. Also we don't have Gtk 2.12 and GLib 2.14 (probably they use the new regular expression functions too).

This might be interesting to see ported to Deblet..

Yeah, Deblet sounds as a more likely target. :)

Here is the Python CLI thread...I don't know if anyone not using Dropbpx will be able to access the forums though:

Bad news - Dropbox won't even run on Deblet - it depends on a closed source daemon (dropboxd) that only exists for x86 + x86/64, not armel. :(

I use Box.net on my n810. Works fine, and is fast, especially the mobile version.
Basic membership is free, and gives up to 2GB of storage I believe.

why am i not surprised. i was suspecting that there had to be some kind of service/daemon running as otherwise it would stop working the moment the user closed down the file manager...
