i wish i could get Easy Debian wotking

hi i am struggling to get Easy Debian working on a n800 and a n810, on the n810 i have all the bits in the etxtras and have downloaded the file from the debian image installer. When i try to open the Synaptic package manager or the debian chroot i gat the following message:

ERROR

You have mo debian.img.ext2 file on your memory cards.

please use the Debian image installer in Extras.

########but i have - it says the file is fully recived?

can you suggest what i should do.

do i need to extract the doenloaded file? if so how do i do that?

thanks

try this:

Code:

cd /media/mmc2
tar -jxvf debian-chroot-img-v2.tar.bz2

I thought the "Download Debian Image" or whatever in the Easy Debian package did it for you but it doesn't appear there is a ".img" file to be mounted anywhere.

hmmm maybe i should just delet the debian-chroot-img-v2.tar.bz2 file and download again. i'm having different problems trying to get it working on a n800 but at least then has the .img file?

Re: i wish i could get Easy Debian wotking

You need to install bunzip2 .. Im not sure what the maemo package for it is or where it's at... search in the package manager.. you are looking for either bzip2, bunzip2, bzip, etc...

Install that and see if that command works.

Where did the wget-log come from?

It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted.
You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files.

You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover
data from undamaged sections of corrupted files.

I don't know exactly what your "phone/modem" setup is, but different connections can cause (or more frequently cause) bad downloads, so if you have more success downloading things with some other connection, and it's not to hard to get, I'd use it. (e.g., it's probably worth a cup of coffee, if you can only get WiFi at the local coffee shop.)

Re: i wish i could get Easy Debian wotking

as a rule i don't use wifi, but i'll break the rule just this once, the original downloads took over 3 hours.

Re: i wish i could get Easy Debian wotking

is it a good sign to have the debian chroot saying 'password:' ?

possessedskier 2008-09-17 17:35

Re: i wish i could get Easy Debian wotking

I never get asked for a password Debian chroot. It sets up chroot and then displays a [root@Debian: /] prompt. It sounds like the img file still didn't copy correctly.

Did you reboot after the install?

I posted on your other thread asking if you had at least 1.3gb free on the card that you're trying to install to. Maybe you're running out of space for the installation to complete.

Re: i wish i could get Easy Debian wotking

nope.... it's a brand new 2gb card, i tryed downloading via a phone again........ it says its done

Re: i wish i could get Easy Debian wotking

This should probably be taken to the Easy Debian thread. Maybe Qole or somebody else there has a solution.

Re: i wish i could get Easy Debian wotking

hmmmm i've done 2 dowmloads today 'of the big file' and both tablets and both tablets are requesting a password when i open the debian chroot. if this is a common error please let me know and i'll keep trying untill i get it right, on the other hand if the download now reqires a password can some one tell me it.

thanks

p.s. i just noticed THanks T Hanks Tom Hanks
http://swisscharts.com/actorimages/tom_hanks.jpg
i'll never be able to use the word in quite the same was again, funny the way the mind works and ow no if you think aboutit [he he] there are lots and lots of yellow Tom Hanks 'thanks' all over this website...... maybe it's time to change the word thanks to another word... only joking.

Re: i wish i could get Easy Debian wotking

setup a password in xterm first and you won't need to in chroot. :)
Isn't this fun? ;)

moshing 2008-09-18 17:12

Re: i wish i could get Easy Debian wotking

i actually love it, and if i do some clever stuff with the gimp once i eventually get it working, it will actually be worth while. i will google it later myself but i have to ask...... how do i set up a password in xterm?

possessedskier 2008-09-18 17:38

Re: i wish i could get Easy Debian wotking

I'll ask again: Have you rebooted after the img installation before running the chroot terminal per the installation instructions?

Qole says in this post on his Easy Debian thread that you need to reboot to load his changes to the sudoers file that eliminates the need to enter a password.

possessedskier 2008-09-18 17:42

Re: i wish i could get Easy Debian wotking

Another possible solution from past posts:

I fixed it by:

1. uninstalling the easy chroot package
2. rebooting
3. installing the easy chroot package
4. rebooting

That's the first package you installed. Not the big download. You shouldn't have to do the big download again when trying this.

Re: i wish i could get Easy Debian wotking

I'm sorry I didn't see this thread before. If you have problems with Easy Debian, try to post them in one of my threads, so I'll notice it.

Moshing, did you ever get things working?

I also have some tips for getting Gimp working with big images on the tablet.

Make sure, everyone, that you update to the latest version (now in the Extras repository)!
