Wow..what a headache...

Well its been two weeks since i have my n800. All i can say is wow. I can not believe how hard it is to install aps and such. Takes me about 3-4hrs for each program i want to install to find out "how to properly install them". My list of programs i would like to get on my n800 is
1.pidgin (working now...wish i could send from the thumb keyboard)
2. tiemu for autocad class...i have it installed but i think i need to find a rom for it.
3.pan so i can use my usenet acount. spent about 2 hrs on this and still havent got any where.
4. screen rotate for tiemu (works but took about 1.5hrs to get it installed)

I guess if I knew it was THIS difficult to install aps as in taking more then a few clicks. I might of though twice about getting a n800. I knew it wasnt the easiest process but this is crazy. sorry for the rant. But after 6hrs of trying to gets aps installed all i have got done is screen rotate and tiemu loaded.

It's not normally that difficult. You picked programs that are more difficult. The process isn't set up to be completely easy unless you happen to fall into the easy paths like I did. If I wanted to install Pigdin I would be hard pressed to use up 5 minutes. I'll refresh my memory about Pan and get back to you if someone doesn't beat me to it. It should be simple, and it was the half dozen times or so I installed it.

For TIEmu get a Ti92 Rom, it doesn't need any rotation.

I just dont understand why when a person tries to install something fron maemo or the aplication manager. That most of the time it seems that it doesnt have all the files it needs to install.

Re: Wow..what a headache...

i have no idea about the archiver......try unzipping it in a pc, then mail it to yourself. Sucks when stuff don't work straight as they are supposed to. I guess the whole mess is about the OS changing to diablo, a lot of stuff stopped working out of the box. But i still like the whole repository system. Being a PC user, having something install and uninstall from the list its great. Hope you get a better experience once you have the stuff installed.

If you're having issues with missing dependencies, check and make sure you have some of the more common (e.g. Extras, Extras-devel, etc) (and possibly uncommon depending on the application) repositories "installed" in Application Manager. When Application Manager displays the package(s) that are missing (under the "Problems" tab when you click the Details button instead of OK when installing a package), you can try and search on gronmayer's site for the package(s) and see what repository it's in and install said repository right from the site.

Well I could be wrong but I think xarchiver used to download everything you would need to unarchive rar and zip files, but now I think it is strictly the front-end for unzip and unrar. So you have to download unzip and unrar separately. Secondly, for programs that need roms like tiemu the maker legally can't just package them in with the program. I also think that since we are getting these programs for free, some hassle in installing them is a more than ok tradeoff.

Re: Wow..what a headache...

ure kinda right...but how good is something for free or better yet is it free if it takes so much of ure time to install properly. Most think time is money. Don't get me wrong i love the programers and are very thankful. But how good are programs if the normal person can't understand how to install them. I am just saying I am understanding why these devices are and never will(without change) be mainstream.

Thanks for the help. But I was wondering why there isnt or why no one has made a download with all the dependencies. And keep it updated.

I ment repository not dependencies....at lest i think thats what i ment...lol...I need to learn all the terms. I dont understan why if a program needs a file it doesnt automatically download it.

A package will download and install dependencies if it is able to find them in the repositories listed in your catalog. In order for that to happen you have the right repository/repositories set up in your catalog in Application Manager.

Enabling in your catalog the more common repositories that I mentioned previously will solve the majority of dependency problems when installing applications. Only every once in a good while you'll come across an application that may need to have someone's personal repository enabled for example, to get the correct dependencies.
