Next Nokia tablet definitely has 3G

Sorry about this to you folks that want to keep the Nokia tablet in the Stone Age.

As long as you can turn off things to save power and it doesn't get locked down.

It was new to me. But I had skipped all the n900 and 'speculation' threads.

You know, I may have been on the same side of that issue as you (wanting 3G), but there's no need to be a jerk about it. We got what we wanted. Rise above the petty bickering (that _both_ sides threw into it), and be a gracious winner.

It's time for both sides of that argument to move on and go back to being a community with common goals. The time for arguing (and worse), being a divided community, etc., about "3G or not 3G" is over.

Re: Next Nokia tablet definitely has 3G

I'm going to make a prediction about "voice and SMS/MMS" in Maemo5:

What we see in those two images linked from the OP are 4 columns, not 5. I am concluding that Maemo 5 is "phase 4" of the 5 phase/step plan. My prediction is:

Phase 4 (Maemo 5) will have HSPA for data only (I hope it also has EDGE, though).

Phase 5 will have voice and SMS/MMS as well, and thus be a full phone.

(that, or phase 5 wont be delivered until after 4G is here, and there's no longer a distinction between voice, messaging, and data -- instead we'll have high speed carrier delivered voip instead of a dedicated voice channel, and ubiquitous IM presence on your phone instead of an SMS/MMS channel)

Re: Next Nokia tablet definitely has 3G

johnkzin, no one is bickering here are making fun of someone else. Your trying to make a fight. What you want us to speak like were in church or somethin ?

My "Stone Age" comment doesnt make anyone angry its just a phrase. The Stone Age ended long, long ago before computers so its obvious I am not literal here.

Even Benson, a "real conservative" in this regard that has stated clearly that he doesnt want 3G responded but not with a comment indicating he was pissed or wants to fight.

Dude, just "let boys be boys" here.

You seem to overlook the possibility of being a troll, where choosing a side may be merely an expedient.

And Anthony, you just misrepresented my position. Not that I expected better...

Then you accuse others of wanting to start a fight. Wow.

Sometimes I wish there were a No Thanks button.

I thought it was not yet clear/official/decided whether or not they were going to be putting the voice/SMS/MMS support into Maemo 5? All they had announced was HSPA?

Is that wrong?

I think that's all they've announced. But I'd say it's a pretty safe guess. ;)

3G is the big story here.

johnkzin 2008-09-22 05:11

Re: Next Nokia tablet definitely has 3G

The main part wasn't the "Maemo 5 gives HSPA only", it was noting that despite "5", this is only step 4, and the prediction that step 5 will have full phone capabilities (relative to whichever phone network model is in place when it finally gets delivered).

Really? What Prediction exactly (just wondering)

I always though the tablets were NOT meant to be traditional phones. I personally like the inclusion of 3G, but would NEVER buy a tablet if it was a phone. It just seems wrong in a tablet. The future, everything will run off one data link, maybe IP or something better. The tablets are a step into that future.

Strange, I hadn't realised the IT was a religion. To me it's a gadget that does what you want or doesn't, changes sometimes, you buy or you don't.

Re: Next Nokia tablet definitely has 3G

i would not call keeping the 3G out of the tablet as "stone age". i see it as simply making the device more flexible, funny enough ;)

i recently read about a phone that could all kinds of connections, even sat. that one, paired up with the tablet, would be interesting ;)

Well, as a 3G user (and quitter, now) for some time, 3G _is_ stone age to me. But I don't really care if it's in the new tablet or not, what I really really care for is if it's got two proper full-size SD slots.

I used to care about such things, too.

The only thing I want now is any new hardware I can spend my money on. Nokia pleeeze let me give you my money! Please take it!

In Berlin yesterday afternoon trying to get my 810 connected to my phone was not good (it wasnt greasy KFC fingerprints stopping me either)

I, for one, welcome an all in one device.

Enough sentiment like that, and I might quit worrying about keeping a job. :D

Was it the thought in the back of your mind that you'd pay about £50/MB for the pleasure of it? ;)

lma 2008-09-22 14:17

Re: Next Nokia tablet definitely has 3G

It's not really *that* bad these days. Cost me about a tenner (£3/MB) on a 3 PAYG SIM for email, some casual browsing and letting AGPS do its thing over three days.

heh, i had left over credit and was gonna just pop into irc - i didnt wanna surf.
I just wanted to be connected and pass the time away.

Mind you, with my word count it wouldv probably been £1000's :D

I thought you had to be a licensed chemist to sell tablets? :p

I agree in principle though, and hope the internal data modem is a total blackbox and can be totally 100% disabled if required and does not prevent the device from being used without it.

tso, its a basic crappy o2 ice. kinda nice little 3g thing.
I've had it connected once i believe right at the start, but i ddnt do anything beyond novelty.
Being sat in Berlin with no support channels available made the task extremely difficult.

Theres probably a really easy way to do it, but I dont understand which hsdpbpapapdpdpapeppedcha mode to use or which number to call or ports needed to open up and stuff.

I managed to get the phone linked and my tablet knew who it was but i could not get beyond this so just carried on munching kfc and etching my thoughts and observations of berlins' diverse culture :)

Re: Next Nokia tablet definitely has 3G

I am so happy that finally I can buy a Nokia tablet that has full cellphone capability.

Also, its so funny to hear some of you say like Thesandlord that you want 3G however you dont want voice calling because then you are locked into a carrier. With 3G you are also locked into a carrier.

As Ive said before in other threads, voice calling is coming. One thing for sure is that voice calling on the Nokia tablet will result in an increase in market share that might be 10 or 100 fold.

I think that most of you see the tablet as a niche techie device and you don't want to be carrying around something that lets say, Paris Hilton, will also be carrying around. Unfortunately for those types, Nokia looks at it from a bottom line, marketshare and dollars perpective and wants as many people as possible to buy one including your teenage niece and also Paris Hilton.

Thats right, Nokia wants Paris Hilton to buy the next release of the tablet.

Thats why they have been focusing on enhancements such as all the latest "ease of use" stuff found in this past release of the OS.

I doubt this. My guess is that Nokia still thinks of the tablets as a very experimental product line and that, in fact, they try not to go mainstream with it right now. In the end, someday, the technology created with the tablets will of course end up in mainstream devices, but I'm almost certain that Paris Hilton will not buy the next generation (N900 or whatever).

Same here, if it blocks me from doing what I want it to do then I don't want it.

I understand if it somethings don't work like 3G in Debian. But if it blocks me from doing things I can already do with my n800.

I think most of the people who aren't fans of integrated HSPA aren't against it because it will make the tablet more popular. The arguments against HSPA go like this:
1) I will be paying a lot more for functionality I won't use.
2) It won't work on the carrier of my choice.
3) It will lead to restrictions in what we can do with the tablet.

If you don't understand why people don't want HSPA, don't just assume their reason is stupid and try to tell them they're wrong.

Oh yeah... and if I am forced to pay a monthly fee to even purchase the n9xx.. I will also discontinue my support for the tablet.

ah, so you have the pairing working, but didnt have the actual connection set up until you found you wanted to use it...

i take it you have never been in the boys scouts ;)

its probably to late to tell you this, but from what i can tell the tablet holds settings in its phone connectivity wizard for o2...
