MSN Messenger client opinions?
At last count there were 4 different ways of logging into a MSN account on the n8*0: RTcom, Pidgin, Fring and Gizmo.
There's threads here on configuring each (especially after the Diablo update broke RTcom for a lot of people), but I was hoping to consolidate some opinion here. Personally, I haven't decided yet. When I last used Pidgin it didn't seem fully Hildonized - occasionally causing the tablet menus to blank out when switching focus and the interface felt like a desktop app struggling to run on a tablet. I was pretty pleased to to have MSN support in the default chat client thanks to RTcom, but I encountered an issue when connecting to GTalk and MSN with the same email address, contacts were associated with the wrong account. I'm yet to reinstall it since my latest flash. As for Fring and Gizmo, I think I'd really embrace them if I had a solid connection anywhere except home. Their MSN functionality isn't anywhere near as extensive as the others and since I don't use VoIP, they're not as suitable. Anyone else have any experiences? |

I don't use MSN, but the Telepathy upgrades adds nice support for the built in client, as well as AIM, Yahoo, GTalk, Jabber, etc.. I like the built in client, it integrates well with the tablet. Pidgin is OK, but I think its too bloated. Fring is a more lite solution. Gizmo is not what you want at all. WAY to slow and bloated. |
Re: MSN Messenger client opinions?
Gizmo does support video conferencing, but I don't know for which protocols this works.

Re: MSN Messenger client opinions?
aMSN has been ported too, and has video, but it hasn't been optimized so its very slow. It would be nice if someone striped it a little so it would be lighter, but right now i prefer pidgin, as I like to enter IRC every now and then. I hope I could use the camera in a functional way to chat with my sister in Australia, but no program has allowed me the cam to PC i was hoping for. MSN would be ideal as most of my friends have it already installed.

Re: MSN Messenger client opinions?
aMSN might be slow because its TCL/Tk. For IRC, there are tons of options. Pidgin, Bitlbee...
Did you try Gizmo? |
