So it uses a Ti DSP? Presumably there's no DSP task source code though?

and yes, that iso probably holds source code. but it would not surprise me that the real meat, the interface, codecs and drivers, are not under GPL and therefor not found on the iso.

remember, QT is dual licensed. archos could just get a license from trolltech, and not having to disclose anything interface related.

So? It's been a very long time since Archos advertized itself as an open source-minded company. In fact, the PMA430 was their first and only OSS-centric device.

Archos doesn't claim it supports the OSS movement, it doesn't champion its cause and it certainly doesn't claim its devices are OSS marvels.

I don't like Archos because these days the company charges its users for the air they breathe in the vicinity of its products, but I certainly don't think they play foul with OSS.

True, it uses OMAP3. So what? CPUs don't magically give you "best tabletpc performance"; for that you need software. You haven't even tried to justify how its limited software is better than the N8x0 tablets.

It does have some open-source components. But (in my understanding) you can't even modify those components, recompile, and install your own version, because updates must be signed by Archos. So it's quite wrong to say "it is opensource" as though that was a benefit.

Another effect of the requirement that Archos sign all updates is that, unlike some proprietary systems (e.g. Windows Mobile), there is no third-party software available. While it may (and for all I know, does) beat the N8x0 with a stock installation, it cannot compete with the capabilities of a device with extensive third-party apps (whether open or closed).

Like I said in #maemo, I'm filing an enhancement request for Nokia to include a link for buying carbon footprint offset credits with their ultra-hip "Unplug the charger" warning.

I heard they actually include the web browser in this product. Whats the world coming to?

They take sweet hardware, put some nice software on it, and completely lock down the device. Apple tried that, failed, and opened the App Store. Will Archos open a App Store? No...

But don't worry, someone will find a backdoor and unlock the device. Just like everything else.
