ARCHOS Generation 5G

I think the ARCHOS Generation 5G is the best solution for all people who wantbest tabletpc performace, it is opensource and it is better of a nokia nxxx. It have OMAP3 processor on Linux OS with WiFi and 3G connectivity, 4.8" screen with a resolution of 800x480.

Um... Search first?

And... Archos is Open Source? That's a rather surprising development ;)

Would be interesting to see what hw accel they use/codecs/etc.

Time to mount some isos and have a browse :)

quick guess is that they use the linux kernel and some other stuff to make the development time shorter, but on top of that have their own proprietary ui toolkit and stuff doing the actual user accessed stuff.

that way they can be compliant to GPL and also have their cake.

kinda like how nokia have done their "differencing"...

Yeah, I saw mention of Qt on their website

Re: ARCHOS Generation 5G

It is NOT open source. Even if it runs on some type of *nix, it is not open source. They patch up any holes that lead to the device's freedom.

and this ARCHOS Generation 5 Codice sorgente:
versione1.3.x (194821Kb)

isn't source code ?

Re: ARCHOS Generation 5G

gah, what a silly page layout.

to get the iso link, one had to click on the "notice of GNU GPL" button, that says nothing about there being a link further down.

and yes, that iso probably holds source code. but it would not surprise me that the real meat, the interface, codecs and drivers, are not under GPL and therefor not found on the iso.

remember, QT is dual licensed. archos could just get a license from trolltech, and not having to disclose anything interface related.

btw, same page in english:

"The products listed below include some Free Software programs which are copyrighted by the Free Software Foundation and others and published under the GNU General Public License (GPL) and Lesser General Public License (LGPL).
In compliance with the GPL and LGPL, we provide the source code of these programs for download."

... The keyword is "some" :)

EDIT: About 95% of the iso is full with this:

Re: ARCHOS Generation 5G

So it uses a Ti DSP? Presumably there's no DSP task source code though?

/me's not got round to looking at the isos yet.

So? It's been a very long time since Archos advertized itself as an open source-minded company. In fact, the PMA430 was their first and only OSS-centric device.

Archos doesn't claim it supports the OSS movement, it doesn't champion its cause and it certainly doesn't claim its devices are OSS marvels.

I don't like Archos because these days the company charges its users for the air they breathe in the vicinity of its products, but I certainly don't think they play foul with OSS.

Now Nokia OTOH...

It use OMAP3 ...

Re: ARCHOS Generation 5G

True, it uses OMAP3. So what? CPUs don't magically give you "best tabletpc performance"; for that you need software. You haven't even tried to justify how its limited software is better than the N8x0 tablets.

It does have some open-source components. But (in my understanding) you can't even modify those components, recompile, and install your own version, because updates must be signed by Archos. So it's quite wrong to say "it is opensource" as though that was a benefit.

Another effect of the requirement that Archos sign all updates is that, unlike some proprietary systems (e.g. Windows Mobile), there is no third-party software available. While it may (and for all I know, does) beat the N8x0 with a stock installation, it cannot compete with the capabilities of a device with extensive third-party apps (whether open or closed).

And you complained about the eco-friendly charging message in OS2008.

Like I said in #maemo, I'm filing an enhancement request for Nokia to include a link for buying carbon footprint offset credits with their ultra-hip "Unplug the charger" warning.

Re: ARCHOS Generation 5G

I heard they actually include the web browser in this product. Whats the world coming to?

They take sweet hardware, put some nice software on it, and completely lock down the device. Apple tried that, failed, and opened the App Store. Will Archos open a App Store? No...

But don't worry, someone will find a backdoor and unlock the device. Just like everything else.

Given how TI has spread the specs of the 3530 around (compared to the predecessor, that is), I should think it won't take long before the "5" and "7" get hacked wide open, if only because Archos' current firmware is heap crappy.

that is, if they manage to grab the mindshare of the iphone, so that it becomes a matter of prestige to crack it...

Re: ARCHOS Generation 5G

Recently I've played with the new Archos 5 just to find out about the new OMAP CPU (yes, again at Saturn Alexanderplatz). Man the thing is heavy. Too heavy. And the browser is slow! My first test was again to try to open a local file. No success, it does not understand "file://...". I simply hate this attitude... The screen however is just wonderful.

Thesandlord 2008-09-29 22:18

Re: ARCHOS Generation 5G

The browser is slow? On an OMAP3? That is really sad. Really Sad. But its Archos, so...

Screen is OLED right? I hope all the new devices come out with OLED screens.

Edit: Ok, got confused with another device. Its just an LCD...

i suspect that some will think any browser not going chrome fast on a quad core with 4 way sli will be slow, oh and lets back that up with a 100MB+ fiber connection to the net ;)

Obviously no OLED (hm, not sure), but nevertheless very bright and with high contrast, also 4.8" is substantially better than 4.3".

I had the Archos and my N800 side by side with the same network connection  I guess Opera had to struggle with all these Archos' bonds.

so your saying it was slower then the n800?

Not slower but only a little bit faster, say 30%. On the pages I visited there was almost no flash; N800 had flash off, Archos not. Bandwidth was low (WLAN shared by many customers obviously). I've surfed about 10 minutes. Maybe this weekend I'll do some more precise experiments.

I think you're wrong. Or at least have not used any Archos products :) 3G connectivity is only announced. No bluetooth. They don't let you NEAR the linux that's in there. Sorry, the Archos 5G is to the NIT's what gaming consoles are to PC-s. Each has a purpose, and if you think they address the same people and the same needs you're pretty wrong.
