Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
Not sure if this is the place to put this, but since updating Pidgin this morning, I can no longer go directly to my browser and web e-mail from the app. It seems it changed the default browser to MANUAL, with no other choice and greyed out the chance to change it. As a temporary fix, if I knew what to type into the Manual settings to point to the browser, that would help. Using N810 with Diablo

Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
Well there was another update today and now pidgin won't even start. Anyone else have this problem?
|
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
Did you use the one in devel repository? Probably it still needs to be tested for bugs and issues...
|
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
yea, like the bug where it DOESN'T work

Yea, I actually saw the notice of a new update today, and foolishly downloading it, with the HOPE that it would correct the problem. Of course, after installing, My pidgin no longer opened either. So I uninstalled it and all the associated apps, and now when I try to reinstall, I get "corrupt installation file errors" WONDERFUL! I just LOVE software developers. 'scuse me, "Engineers" I LOVE how they TEST their apps BEFORE releasing them, I LOVE how they break what's not broken. This is TRULY a group of FINE FINE individuals. Yea, they're "engineers" like Sarah Palin is a "maverick" So now, due to the FINE FINE work of these dedicated men and women, I have a $400 piece of equipment that I can no longer use for IM, and rarely can use for even E-mail, as ever since the upgrade to Diablo, that is screwed up as well. What a great investment. Perhaps I can dump this hunk of junk and get a new Ipod Touch |
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
JustNick- probably. How can I tell which repo an update is coming from??
davidsco27- Relax, these guys write the software for free, no one ripped you off..... and you should really install RTCOMM beta for IM. |
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
Pidgin USED to work wonderfully, before the last 2 "updates" I just wasted 20 minutes reflashing and STILL get the corrupt installation file error. I looked at RTcomm, but it says I can't install it because I'm missing some packages. Look, I'm not a techno geek, I just expect what I paid for to work. Two VERY basic functions. Unfortunately, without them, this thing is an expensive Ipud.

Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
davidsco27 the devel repository is not supposed to be used for "productivity", in fact is something developers use to upload the latest ports so they can share them with other people, who than give feedbacks to point out what is good, what can be better and what is really really bad...
Whenever you try to install an app a warning is issued, you have to decide if you can take the chance to try something that can or cannot work or not... Simply uninstall pidgin, disable the devel repository, use the search option to find a known working version of pidgin and install it... as simple as that, no more no less. st5150 look in the Application Manager, there's the list of repositories you're using, check if the extra-devel is enabled or not ;) Here's the thread about pidgin and the latest diablo ssu http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=24017 |
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
I understand that. It did not come from the deval repository. I have looked for a place and a way of installing an older version, but have come up empty. Their site is about as useless as a submarine with screen doors. It seems to have no been updated in months. The forums there are unanswered, and there is no way of getting any assistance or finding an older version for the N810.

Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
If you post the exact errors I'm sure some nice people here will volunteer their time and help you out. For starters, follow all the steps on this website: http://rtcomm.garage.maemo.org/ and I think you paid $400 for the hardware from Nokia, not the software since Pidgin is open source and has nothing to do with Nokia, just some nice folks decided to port pidgin to the maemo platform.... for free.
|
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
I have wasted my time posting both a bug on bugzilla and the problem on the inanswered forums on Pidgin's site. The Nokia is useless without apps, Nobody told the developers to write the software, and nobody is holding a gun to their heads, if they are going to do, and release it to the public, they should at LEAST have the integrity to TRY it beforehand. And PLEASE, come off your high holier than thou "I'm a Linux" geek horse. You're not impressing anyone here, as I am sure you don't in real life either.
And I posted the errors. The "install file is corrupt" |
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
http://www.google.com/search?q=iphone thanks David, time to stop polluting this thread. Best wishes in the future with your better suited device and I hope you can get a full refund from the www.pidgin.im folks.

Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
Okay, regardless of this, what is the correct manual command to launch Microb from Pidgin?

Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
That was a nice waste of time. Says it needs about 20 different application packages

Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
The last time I remember having a launching pidgin problem, it was something about dmesg and the .desktop file, but it would launch just fine from command prompt.... well it looks like we have bigger problems with pidgin this time around:
tablet:~# pidgin Segmentation fault Oh well. |
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
So, may be it's time to see the qutIM ;) (experimental)

Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
Who uses ICQ????? I need AIM and Yahoo. Even the useless MNotify only works with Gmail. Leave it to Nokia to provide an IM Client built in that only handles networks nobody uses

Anyways. I'm also having this issue with Pidgin. I saw the update, tried to install it, but I got the Installation File Corrupted message. I was able to install it manually with apt-get install --fix-missing pidgin, but Pidgin won't launch. I get a Segmentation Fault when I try to launch from a terminal. Does anyone know what this means? |
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
Actually, nothing is getting us anywhere. I have uninstalled, reflashed and reinstalled. Tried the older version. Nothing. I guess the developers leaving what was working alone was out of the question.

Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
Hello! Yeah, I don't support the tone of some of the previous messages, but it brings up an interesting question. Can some senior member give a list of what the standard "vanilla-flavored" repository list might look under the newest diablo. I keep my N800 tablet fairly conservative but certainly test quite a few apps. I just had the Pidgin problem too and certainly believe it was because some app I tried enabled the "dev repos" behind my back! Now that I have disabled them (thanks to the excellent advice given here) the problem is resolved. I seem to remember that most apps will notify you if a repo needs to be added (and you can accept or decline) but apparently some apps do not play nice and enable repos without telling you (like the "dev extras", etc.) which can obviously cause havoc by "tricking" you into updating some app with an unstable developer version, etc.
Thank you for all of the good advice here and I am going to keep a watchful eye on my repo list from now on! |
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
So did you get Pidgin working again?
|
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
Sorry, I did not try to reinstall Pidgin (thinking that it might really be a corrupt image). I don't actively use it and was only testing it previously, I was more concerned about the "behind-my-back" repos that I had to disable. After disabling "dev-extras" (and "diablo-sdk", I believe), I was successful in uninstalling the "corrupt" version of Pidgin and am simply leaving it there for now.

Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
Well, here's something. I just tried to go to the Pidgin main page. Not the maemo garage page, but the regular page for Pidgin and the site is down. Maybe that's it, and why we can't download??? Doesn't explain why there was an update today though, that broke it. I can NOT believe there isn't an IM client on this thing, as long as Nokia has been making tablets, that handles AIM and Yahoo. Jeez, The Ipud has had an app store for what, a month, and they already have AIM, and a multi platform IM client. A joke

Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
I think I just got it back! Went to the garage page on my laptop, downloaded the Chinook install. Moved it to my NAS hard drive and connected to it from the NIT. Installed it from there and Walla! It worked.

Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
I looked at Fring. Stinks. I got Pidgin to work, and got the browser link working too, so I'm happy again
|
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
It seems they updated it, so it's working again.

Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
Hey, guys!
Sorry about the headache. I did indeed upload a version of Pidgin that would just crash. I fixed it, but then the buildbot seems to have screwed up, resulting in the "corrupt" files. I then uploaded the version that works, (pidgin-2.5.1-0nix2) and things look OK now. Again, sorry about the headache. |
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
BTW: Dunno if you guys know this, but there's this thing called the Maemo Extras Promoter. It's available for both Chinook and Diablo, and basically lets you vote for which packages move from extras-devel to extras. That way, you can save a good package before a st00pid developer (such as myself) overwrites a perfectly good package with a broken one. Heh ... *grin* ... *blush* ...

Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
Yes, it now works. The only bugs I have come across remaining is the Yahoo disconnects, and sometimes when I minimize the app, it disappears. But thanks, this is a much needed app.
|
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
My Yahoo also disconnects, but my Google friends stay connected
|
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
yahoo str8 crashes my pidgin as soon as i enter details of my new account and hit ok..
and also pidgin takes forever to boot.. other than that, no real major horror storys - thnk the developers / God |
Re: Pidgin Browser Problem with latest update
My problem with Pidgin now is that the link to Yahoo Mail points to an old link. When I co to my account to check Yahoo Mail, I get an old link instead of it opening Yahoo Mail on the browser. I wish there was a way to change the link
