See. It works for what I need it for. Wifi internet browsing, e-mail, and instant messaging when I don't want to whip out the laptop. It excels lovely in those areas for me.

Heck, I walked into a meeting with some clients, tapped into their wifi network - pre-arranged access - and showed them their website on a handheld that had a darn good screen since my laptop was the webserver for this experiment. All just to show them that the Adobe Flex project would run on the slowest machine they didn't have.

I leave the software development and beta testing to the geeks. When I spend $400 on something, I expect it to do what it should. If I wanted an experimental door stop, I'd ask for one. Of the 3 things I bought this for, it does none of them particularly well, although it used to do at least 2 of them better. This thing is as raw as fish at the fulton fish market. Inrefined, weakly executed, poorly supported and just not ready for prime time. Probably why I had to drive to another state to buy one and nobody seems to have ever heard of it, let alone provide accessories for it
It's been stated before in these threads and site ad nauseum. This is not a mainstream product. That's (in my opinion) not a bad thing. But the fact that you're talking about software development and beta testing - trust me, the open source community isn't really beta testing, it's more like a big crap shoot (gambling) where some apps or features are duplicated, and it's just all about finding an app that works best for you. In my case, it's Skype, Modest, Map, Xournal, Maiku, HomeIP, HomeMemFree, Pidgin or RTComm, and quite a few other apps.

My internet tablet allows me to type messages like this... while even on the toilet.

And if accessories are another problem, I just had a gentleman make me a pouch I'd be proud of in public. I think you should have done a bit more research and your outcome would have been totally different.

Good luck on your endeavors. It just seems like the N810 was not made for you. And that's not a bad thing. I use mine alongside my iPhone 3G which still doesn't have Adobe Flash.

Simpons? Where are they from? BTW: I had one stylus slip out of my fingers and into the rails of the seat in my car and it's been there ever since until I can get the time to dig around for it. THAT one I didn't happen to lose.. but I'm sure glad I had the extra one to use in the meantime. And then there have been times when I've lost my Palm styluses.. but I mostly blame the ability of those styluses to roll off of tables. It just happens, sometimes. It would be particularly great to have some aftermarket replacements for just such events.

Re: Diablo BLOWS

I don't support any PCs, but I do run a network with three-thousand of them connected, does that count? I'm not a linux professional, nor am I any OS professional - I leave that to the OS guys - but I still get along just famously with both my Tablet and its Diablo OS.

It's true that flash does not run fast enough on some sites - making the BBC news website a particular pain in the ***, but that's easily got around by leaving it disabled, using a low-graphics version or a little greasemonkey/user css.

All in all though I fail to see what is so bad about either the ITs or Diablo. They are small-format devices that are hugely customisable, good all-rounders and easy to fit in a pocket. I can understand why people have strong feelings about them - in both directions.

Davidsco27, I am speaking directly to you here for a moment, although it is also applicable in a more general sense which is why I am not PM'ing it: Leaving aside any personal feelings I might have, they aren't relevant or appropriate in this forum, may I humbly suggest that if you find the device and its operating system so insufferable then you find a combination that is more appropriate to your particular set of requirements? You do seem to have a somewhat mercurial relationship with your Internet Tablet - almost Latin in its intensity - and I can't help feeling that you may be better served by a different device.

I don't mean this in a negative way, I just genuinely feel that given the posts you have made here, this obviously isn't the device for you. That's not to imply that you aren't good enough for it, or that it isn't good enough for you, merely that it isn't the device you want.

Mine slid out of the device somewhere when it was being carried to a job. As I couldn't find a suitable case, the one I have stays open on the end, and the stylus just slid out. I actually venture outside once in a while. You should try it. There's a WHOLE world out there that isn't inhabited by furry creatures roaring, or wearing storm trooper helmets

Well, after I lost one stylus (while travelling on the train after a long day) I decided to not risk the other one and I bought a multisystem pen from Lamy (pencil, ballpoint pen, stylus). Good decision IMHO, it is bigger than the original stylus (so it does not get lost as easily) and replaces the ball pen I was carrying around.

And I'm happy with my N800 as it does what I need it to do... and even a little more.

Was better when Pidgin worked. Unfortunately, both devices are a compromise. What one has, the other lacks, and THAT is the problem. If the Ipud had an SD slot, Flash, and an inexpensively user replaced battery, it would be perfect.

The problem is, I need it to fit in the device, as the original does. I don't want to have to carry around another piece

The definition I know has nothing to do with Asians. I live and grew up in a former big IBM town. Back in the 60's, when IBM had over 15,000 employees here, they were all called zipperheads implying that IBM unzipped their head, dumped in all the IBM propaganda, and zipped it back up. Back to the original topic (BTW, my forum editor does have spell check):
If you use rtcom-beta-os2008 you don't need Pidgin. Yes it's beta, but it works flawlessly for me.

My N800 is my favorite toy (well, maybe my second favorite toy). It is exactly what I expected when I bought it, a Linux device that can be endlessly configured. I never grow bored with it. If you did your research you would have known what it was before you spent the money. Anybody who spends that much money without doing the research first is a fool.

I don't see the point of complaining about it and then coming and insulting everyone that would have or could have helped you through your problems, but hey, I'm only Linux geek, right? I'm not supposed to know about human interaction.

I looked at rtcom, didn't like it, and wasn't able to install it anyway. Too many dependencies. I did research, but there wasn't much available to me originally that I was aware of. Hindsight is 20-20. Like I have said, there are things that are nice on the NIT, and a lot that is missing. Unfortunately, as usual, no one device does it right. Had the Ipud an SD card, replaceable battery and flash, and wasn't married to Itunes, it would be about as close as you could get. I didn't buy one for those reasons, so one must weigh the plusses and minuses. The app store does give the Ipud a boost, though

I came on to make my opinions of it known and express my frustration with yet another broken app. If you read the threads, you will see I only responded in kind to the GEEKS who beat their chests and began the insults to justify their self-worth.

As an update, I just did manage to get Pidgin working again. I downloaded it from the project site on my Laptop, moved the file to my networked UPNP drive, and installed it from there, and for whatever reason, it worked.

Hi,

Just curious, are you able to get through one post without hurling an insult?

People might listen if you did not come off as the very thing you accuse others of.

You do not like Diablo, I think everyone got that in the first post.

You have spent the rest of the thread insuring the members here feel that way towards you also.

Is there a point to alienating the members here from your position or would you rather they share your position?

If it is the latter, you are going about it all wrong.
