Okay, I got it to work by using the ap.6 URI. When I use:

http://mt.google.com/mt?n=404&v=w2.11&x=%d&y=%d&zoom=%d

I get a black screen. Thanks for the help.

I had been having similar problems but thanks to this thread I know have a working installation :)

No more worrying about not having a map book with me.
