Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
Updated to 9.10 but kept the old image. Is it a placebo effect, or is everything loading noticeably faster? Especially LXDE. My only complaint is that darn one-line keyboard. I just can't figure it out! However, I have printing pretty well diaied-in. I can put together a how-to if anyone is interested.
Also ended up uninstalling the default installed browsers and going with Qole's endorsement of Midori. Loads quickly and can easily print from it. |
Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
o okay thx qole for the speedy reply.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
So, I keep running into an install error. The image will download, and then while untarring, I keep running into a "tar: debian-final.img.ext2: Wrote only xxx of 10240 bytes" and pretty much hangs/ crashes from there. I've tried installing twice, but came to the same issues. Previously reached 6560 and second time 2560 bytes.
Any ideas? |

If you hit the "^1" key, the numbers turn into letters; First, I chose the letters I use most often combined with "Ctrl" on the desktop. "Ctrl-z" is "undo", "Ctrl-x" is "Cut", "Ctrl-c" is "Copy", "Ctrl-v" is "Paste", "Ctrl-s" is "Save", "Ctrl-q" is "Quit", "Ctrl-w" is "Write" (or Save). Then I put a letter I use by itself; "y" for "yes". This seems to come up a lot in the terminal. As for "i" and "p", they're less-often used Ctrl combinations ("Ctrl-i" is used in vi for "insert" and "Ctrl-p" has several uses, including "Print"...) If you manage to figure out how to get "Shift" and "^2" to work (it seems to involve hitting "Shift" then "^2" then "Shift" again), you get some punctuation and some other characters that come in handy. If someone else can make a better one-line keyboard, please do! It is very simple; you edit the /home/user/.matchbox/keyboard-mini.xml, save the file, and toggle the keyboard on to test your changes. When you have a layout that you like, please post it here! Also, I will gladly include keyboards with international layouts. There are a few examples around, but I don't have the patience or the experience to test them. If you get a keyboard layout that works for you, post it here and I'll bundle it with the next version. |
Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
Scarflash: Oops! I was clearing out all of my old .deb files (so people wouldn't download old versions), and I accidentally deleted the install button file, too!
Thanks for seeing that! Fixed! |
Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
:( How does one get the icons to appear at the bottom of the Debian 'tree' wallpaper screen?? Don't have access to any functions. I have installed/deleted/reinstalled multiple times with no change. Someone in a previous post had the same problem. You posted a reply with a 'fix' but it doesn't apply to me. Help. Can't use without icons.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
paulmorin: I assume you are using LXDE? The default config of LXDE puts the "task bar" on the left side of the screen, not the bottom. What happens when you tap and hold on the screen?
Also, you really need to install the new image file; if you are using the old (pre-turbo) image file that used IceWM instead, things will not work correctly. Do you get any errors when starting LXDE? |

The clock in left corner isn't local time. It was in 9.6...

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
*Stupid question alert*
Once installed is the "debian-final.img.ext2" file still required? Can I delete it? or is this where all of the files actually are? Just wanted to say thank you, I am a real Linux newbie and this has really opened my eyes and expanded the usefulness of the NIT. Steve |
Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
back with the pegged CPU and no progress notification in the terminal downloading the debian-final.img.ext2
|
Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
bzip2 seems to be at work @ 76% Cpu followed by tar
|
Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
apparently something is happening since I can see the file in file manager growing in size.
|
Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
sondjata: after downloading, when de-archiving the image file, there is no feedback for approximately 15 minutes. You have to be patient. You can speed things up a bit by putting your CPU into performance mode during the process.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
OK. Installed. Slow as hell. Perhaps it's the limited memory. KDE is a whole 2 orders of magnitude faster.

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
You tap-and-hold on the wallpaper, and a right-click context menu will pop up under your pointer. The last item, Desktop Settings, will let you choose new wallpaper, choose icon size, turn on thumbnails for file display, etc... There are some more settings on the system menu in the top left corner, under Preferences -> Appearance.
There are yet more settings to be found if you tap-and-hold on the left-hand panel. You can move it to other places (maybe you prefer the bottom, top or the right), change the the panel's colour, font, etc |
Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
Qole, I just installed Debian flawlessly! Thank you so much :D The installer and all the applications worked without a hitch. The install didn't take long, either.
This is so awesome :) Thanks again! |
Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
all right so i'm a bit perplexed. I downloaded the ch-root-debian but then it said i had to have an image file on my memory card. So I went to my extras menu and clicked on the debian image finstaller and it opened up xterm and downloaded debian-chroot-img-final onto my memory card. I then went to my app manager and checked for updated. I found, that ch-root-debian was corupt and tried updating it but it didn't work. What should I do?

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
This looks real nice! Thanks qole! Very cool indeed!
With xubuntu getting more bloated, I'll have to give Debian & LXDE a try on my old AMD 1500 machine... |

I'm a bit perplexed too. I don't really understand what happened to you. What do you mean that easy-deb-chroot "was cor[r]upt"? |
Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
well nvm i fixed it by uninstalling it and installing it again. This time I got the whole where i wanted to place each shortcut (i.e. iceweasel, cpu-boost, etc.). Last time I didn't get that and the app manager just froze up and closed. Well now it's working and i'm downloading the 300mb file. :)

Yes, the debian-final.img.ext2 file holds all of the data for the Easy Debian project. It is like a virtual disk inside a file. When you run a Debian program, this file is mounted like a disk drive. |

Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
A note about Java:
I noticed that there was no java command when I first installed this by copying the compressed image into a spare partition. I needed to run "sudo update-alternatives --config java" at which point I could then choose the correct runtime and the "java" command was created. This is REALLY nice. LXDE impresses me :) Actually, another note for that one: You can lower the font size! Go to the Appearance preferences. On the Window page (no idea why it's called that...) there is a Font button to the bottom left. Yay! And for the uninitiated, it may interest you to know that with GTK, the various themes there affect performance since they are each powered by different theme engines. Funny error message of the day: "gcj-dbtool4.3 succeeded unexpectedly" :P |
Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
Picklesworth: It sounds like you know your way around Java. I know very little about it and I would love to hear your impressions of the Open JDK on the tablet.
|
Re: ANNOUNCE: Easy Debian Turbo-Charged Edition!
Sorry, I know nothing of Java. Just took some digging about Debian's alternatives system :)
I'm doing a little course on computer hardware design and have been wanting to run the hardware simulator on my tablet. Finally we have a Java WM that works at a good enough speed so I can get back to learning! (A year later...) Now I just need a little bit more vertical screen space and I'm set. Is there a key I can hold to drag a window from anywhere in OpenBox? (For example, with Metacity in GNOME, you can hold Alt to drag a window, allowing you to drag its title bar off the screen). Edit: Aha! The Menu key does it, of all things. I guess that's mapped to Alt... |
