Just Got My Nokia N810
Actually I would be getting the Nokia N810 in less than 6 hours time . although i have been running ubuntu linux as my primary OS for more than a year. This would be my first experience with the Internet Tablet and i would appreciate if you guys (and girls) can give me tips on some the best and stable 3rd party application to install. and also some few beta must have applications. here are some of the things i look forward to be able to do on the IT
Blog,Twit,Word processing, ssh, media, podcast, chat,IRC, etc while i would prefer a smooth install i am however not afraid to get my hands dirty hacking, cli stuff and hunting down dependencies if the situation warrants. look forward to hearing from you guys. look forward to becoming an active participant in this community. Thanks |
Re: Just Got My Nokia N810
Blog - Maemo WordPy / Mauku
Twitter - Mitter Word Processing - AbiWord (still beta), or the entirety of the OpenOffice suite through Easy Debian. SSH - OpenSSH, and there's a Qwerty12-ported copy of Putty running around somewhere. Media - Canola Podcast - gPodder / Canola Chat - Pidgin IRC - XChat Have a search though, all of this information is already available around this forum. Plus have a look on downloads.maemo.org Might also be a good idea to get your hands a bit dirty with a reflash (I'm guessing the firmware is going to be a little behind). |
Re: Just Got My Nokia N810
I just got an N810 too! Very exciting. Though I've had an N800 for several months, so I'm not new to the platform.
Most of what you'll need to do the stuff you want to is available from the Maemo extras repo -- I'd recommend digging there first before looking elsewhere. I agree with the above list, though I much prefer the built in app for chat (given the well-integrated presence system) over any alternative (such as Pidgin). There are a couple of plugins available (from another repo, contradicting myself -- the Collabora Haze repository) that give the built in app access to chat protocols (MSN, AIM, Yahoo) that it lacks out of the box. For a list of repositories, see gronmayer.com/it. |

Re: Just Got My Nokia N810
yeah thanks finally figured it out .. is there a way to right click and copy and paste on this device
|
Re: Just Got My Nokia N810
Right click: Hold the stylus down for a couple of seconds.
|
Re: Just Got My Nokia N810
copy & paste:
select text with stylus (double-tap to do this in the browser) and either select "edit->copy" from the application menu (if available), or pull out the keyboard and use Ctrl+X for cut, Ctrl+C for copy, and Ctrl+V for paste. |
Re: Just Got My Nokia N810

Re: Just Got My Nokia N810
I checked my gmail account settings, they are the same as the link to those instructions. Did you remember to go to the Google site to enable pop3? To check your OS version go to "settings" then "control panel" then double click on "about product". The latest version is 4.2008.36-5.

Hi there. Ive just got my n810 today as well, I cannot seem to get msn messenger to work on my system. Can anyone tell me how I get it to download please
|
Re: Just Got My Nokia N810
you might need to install pidgin to get msn working .. u might have to use the application manager settings-application manager . then go to tools application catalogue scroll down to maemo extras edit and uncheck disable . the click close .it might prompt you for an update follow it thru then . you should see pidgin among the available applications

Re: Just Got My Nokia N810
Hi guys, I just got my N810 as well, two days ago. I am still in the process of learning how to navigate around it. Of course that is why I am here on this site. I have been reading through the post trying to get as much as I can.
So far I think I have too problems that may be small, maybe not. I was following instructions to update the firmware when I first received the device but, the application said it couldn't connect to the server and I don't know if I really need it or not. Reason being is that I bought it second hand from E-bay. The seller said it was a display model that is practically brand new. It looks brand new but, there applications install on the device that I think were installed from use. My second problem that I am having is accessing my webmail. I have yahoo and hotmail and so far I've tried checking my hotmail. When I do, I logged in, I can see my inbox but can't get any of the messages to open. Is that some sort of browser issue? Thanks |

Can you view your e-mail through the web browser? |
Re: Just Got My Nokia N810
I don't have email account setup on my device since I don't have any pop accounts or anything. I webmail accounts from yahoo and hotmail and so far I can't seem to be able to access them on the build-in browser.

Re: Just Got My Nokia N810
Another question, there is a game folder on the N810 that I see in applications manager but, it is not in the application menu and the folder is empty. How do I put it in the menu to have my games setup there? Thanks

What you can do, is go to Settings > Control Panel > Panels, and from there you can customize how the Application menu sorts and displays the programs. I've added different sections (Multimedia, Games, Applications etc) |

Re: Just Got My Nokia N810
Got an n810 last week. It's actually for my 14 year old son, but I'm 'breaking it in' till the holidays. He knows he's going to get it, but does not know that I have it already.
Got my first GPS fix today while driving around at lunch. Managed to find a hotspot and got AGPS going, then started Maemo Mapper. Or vice versa. Can't quite remember, but saw I had a fix at a traffic light a few minutes later. Long time lurker on ITT. Not new to Unix/Linux. |
