Pigdin First Impression
Pigdin First Impression
It Sucks! I click the About menu item and the About Pidgin window pops up but there's no damn way to close the window. Even quitting Pidgin doesn't get rid of it. And it stays in front of all other applications. Man, how about some QC Pidgin developers. |
Re: Pigdin First Impression
It clears with the cancel function on the D button.
Yes...it would be nice to also have a touchscreen method for closure, too. I think Pidgin is a good program and is one of my "keepers". |
Re: Pigdin First Impression
It's good. It's a good application. The Maemo-port would need a little more love... The "About"-window is not the only part where it shows.
Probably people who moan about "desktop applications cant be made to work on such a small device" think of ports like Pidgin when they say so - which is a pity because it quite obviously could work quite nicely, if only a few rough edges were ironed out. |
Re: Pigdin First Impression
i got rid of it as it was also screwing up the UI of the N810.

Re: Pigdin First Impression
When I go to help->About, that dialog has a Close button
|
Re: Pigdin First Impression
I'm running Diablo an there's no close button in the About dialog that pops up on my N810. If there had been I wouldn't have been so annoyed. I couldn't get rid of the About dialog and it stayed in front of any other running app that I tried to bring to the front.

Re: Pigdin First Impression
Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing...

Re: Pigdin First Impression
Well that close button wasn't there. And although the Close button wasn't there, at the bottom middle, I'm a programmer and thought that maybe it was s display problem and so I tried clicking (touching?) at that exact spot just in case it was there but invisable for some reason. Nothing happened.
But there were other display problems like clicking on the little icon in the status bar caused the status bar and the icons on left of the workspace to disappear. So I don't feel like reinstalling this app just to see if the Close button suddenly appears. If this app is someday re-released with a price, indicating that the programmer/s has/have taken it to such a level that he/she/they have confidence that it is a "professionally" developed app worth charging for, then I might try it again. I'm not some pimply-faced cheap-assed teen who thinks everything on the internet should be free. And I'm not sure that I like this "Freeware/Open Source" movement as it is more often than not a license for programmers to release sub-standard software..."Who cares if there's some bugs, I'm not charging for it". Free software is always suspect in my opinion. But maybe I should soften my opinion because on the Pidgin website, the very first line is: "This project seeks to provide a port of the bleeding-edge version of Pidgin for the Maemo platform:" But that seems to be the case for most N810/maemo apps - "bleeding-edge". |
Re: Pigdin First Impression
I broke down and decided to give Pidgin a second chance. Maybe I can help the developers instead of just complaining. How do I get a screendump of my N810? I want to post a sreenshot of Pidgin's About dialog with no Close button.

Re: Pigdin First Impression
Mine does that too, there's a very simple and way to get rid of it. Press the back button that is physically on your Internet Tablet.

Re: Pigdin First Impression
Thanks for that, But how do I get the Close button in the dialog like in BrentDC's Pidgin. This is indeed strange as both versions are the same..2.5.1. I wonder if BrentDC is running Diablo.
|
Re: Pigdin First Impression
BrentDC will have to answer that question for himself, but as far as that goes, I get a 'Close' button on the About... dialog on my N800, and I'm running Diablo (latest).
|
Re: Pigdin First Impression
I'm running the latest Diablo here. I think I remember getting that Close button when I was running Chinook, too.
The only thing I can think of is that I also have "Easy-Debian" installed; I know that messes with Matchbox a bit. briand, do you happen to also have Easy-Debian installed? |
Re: Pigdin First Impression
not as yet, no... just a plain vanilla Diablo OS with the latest updates...
|
Re: Pigdin First Impression
I, too have a N800 running a "clean" Diablo install. My Pidgin is the same revision and I don't have the Close button visible either.
Maybe some other application is pre-empting at a higher level? OM Weather, advanced-backlight, large-statusbar-clock or load-applet perhaps? I accepted the OS2008 Feature upgrade (ver 4.2008.36-5)...could that be the difference? Or maybe one of the more subtler libraries visible only in red pill mode? |

Well, I also have OM Weather, advanced-backlight, large-statusbar-clock, and load-applet on my fully OS-upgraded N800, and I do have a visible Close button... |
Re: Pigdin First Impression
