The term "palmtop" could be resurrected. Ten years ago it described products like the Psion Series 5, whose wonderful keyboard, general form factor, and long battery life would be most welcome in a Maemo 5 device.

Whatever name is used, it needs to be made clear that it's not a cellphone.

I don't know the origin. I took a guess that it was derived from the first two syllables of "My Mobile Computer".

And there could be an official backronym for the nerds - Multimedia InterNet Everywhere or somesuch.

How about "pocketbook"?

The problem is that "xbook" suggests a clamshell design, like a book.

I propose minitablet, nanotablet, microtablet or something along those lines, because I see the device as a pocketable computer without keyboard. I think that tablet is a pretty established term, so nanotablet describes the device pretty well.

NETPAD
This name embodies the internet connectivity and eludes to a pad (think pad of paper) which are generally small enough to be handheld. Plus it plays off of the netbook fame.

I like Weblet... But, Internet Tablet works, too! Why get rid of it? Just call it an Inlet ;)
