New name for internet tablet
Now that the term "netbook" has gained acceptance, how about using "netlet" for internet tablet?

Re: New name for internet tablet
Here we go again!

Re: New name for internet tablet
Netlet? Surely you jest. I prefer to call it portable faucet for teh wireless intertubes.

Re: New name for internet tablet
Good to have a discussion on the terminology for devices being built on Maemo. We are stepping up efforts in making Maemo stronger supporting the high-performance processor OMAP3 and HSPA data connectivity as announced in the Maemo Summit 2008. We will be able to built different kind of high-performance multimedia computers with touch screen that fit into your pocket. How to call these devices that are somewhat a crossover of Mobile Internet Devices, Netbooks and Smart Handhelds? I'm open to hear your suggestion.

Re: New name for internet tablet
Pocketpenguin seems a nice name as it is a penguin (linux) in your pcket ....
|
Re: New name for internet tablet
I decided a while ago to stick with 'netbook' when I talk about my baby in public. It describes best what it is/does and keeps people from asking the "phone"-question. (It is a netbook, after all... why invent yet another term?)
|
Re: New name for internet tablet
Pocketpenguin? I like it but maybe corporate branding might have a problem with that term. ;-)
Netbook? Shouldn't a netbook have MS office documents editors on board in the eye of the general consumer? |

"Pocket Computer"
It's a niche product, so the name needs to instantly convey what it is and isn't. People who care about open source will easily find out from the specifications that it runs Linux, so that doesn't need to be in the name. Roger. |
Re: New name for internet tablet
'netlet' is even worse than what we have now.. it says absolutely zero about what the device is. 'netbook' is another one I never understood the point of, mind.

Other series of silly names to consider:
iLet? Nettab? Nettool? Netbuddy? Norganiser? Morganiser? serious, what's wrong with "tabletpc"? |
Re: New name for internet tablet
"Netlet" is broken. Say it out loud a few times to see.
Including "linux" in the name is short sighted - it is an incidental feature. Even though it is the best feature :) - they just used the most sensible platform available. Pocket Computer describes what it is, but is 5 syllables. Forget it. The shortening is PC ferchrissakes! Using "nokia" in the name of a type of device is plain stupid. While "MID" is not a particularly good name from a descriptive perspective, it does have presence already. The nokia n[89]xx series is mobile, internet focussed and a device. So why isn't it a MID? Is there a platform specification somewhere that the nokias do not conform to? |

I anybody's wondering why you're not likely to see many contributions from the old timers, it's because this topic has been discussed to death in the past. ;) I'll leave it up to somebody A. Not on a tablet and B. Not lazy to dig up the links. |
Re: New name for internet tablet
Ok... my lecturer asked me what do I need my "communicator" for.
Maybe it would be the clue. "Mobile Internet Communicator" or Pocket Communicator WEBLET? |
Re: New name for internet tablet
new name for the tablets?
"mine" mate: "Oh cool, whats that?" me: "its mine" mate: "no really, what is it?" me: "ok, its my nokia personal computer" |
Re: New name for internet tablet
I actually think that "internet tablet" isn't bad - weblet sounds OK too imho, netlet sounds kinda weird to me.
I'd use the term "Communicator" or "Com" for the HSDPA tablets...but then again, that term is reserved for the E90 and its predecessors I guess. |
Re: New name for internet tablet
I admit that weblet sounds better than netlet.

Re: New name for internet tablet
if we managed to add a few more bits of hardware on, could we possibly call it a tricorder?

Wouldnt the release of the nokia tricorder coincide with the release of some movie or other.

The problem is that "xbook" suggests a clamshell design, like a book. |
Re: New name for internet tablet
I propose minitablet, nanotablet, microtablet or something along those lines, because I see the device as a pocketable computer without keyboard. I think that tablet is a pretty established term, so nanotablet describes the device pretty well.

Re: New name for internet tablet
NETPAD
This name embodies the internet connectivity and eludes to a pad (think pad of paper) which are generally small enough to be handheld. Plus it plays off of the netbook fame. YARR! }:^)~ Capt'n "lurker" Corrupt |

LCUK! I will be with you in line to see the new Kirk, my friend! :D
I like Weblet... But, Internet Tablet works, too! Why get rid of it? Just call it an Inlet ;) |
