As self-designated judge of this thread, I officially declare you Thread Winner.

Henceforth anything that is almost but not quite a MID will be referred to as a "netpad"

Thanks to all the other participants, your efforts were notable but disappointing.

Congratulations Capt'n Corrupt

Haha.. You guys are cool..

But I admit, I have an unfair advantage. I do branding and design for a living, so I have a pretty refined sense for what sounds 'right'.

Now that I'm actually making money, I'm ITCHING for the N900. I have a project that I'm going to be open sourcing pretty soon. It's not netpad specific, but it would be very helpful for the maemo platform. It would even be useful for Liqbase (lcuk I'm looking in your direction)! All in good time, I suppose.

Anyways, thanks for the kudos!

Has anyone took a challenge to check if the name isn't already taken?
:)
I've came to NETPAD idea but:

already existing solution from PSION.

Heh, that pdf calls it an "Odporny tablet"! Odd porn?

Anyway Nokia can call it anything they want. iPhone was already taken, too.

iTablet :)

Yes folks, its been proven that adding the letter i to the front of anything increases the coolness factor and selling factor by a non-rational imaginary number! Whoooo!

Well, finally a serious suggestion, right? Maybe, not. But there was the suggestion of "Mobile Internet Communicator (MIC). Maybe, an option for Nokia to use when throwing out the first device with Maemo 5 on it. Gotta read more in this thread...

Re: New name for internet tablet

I don't know the origin of Maemo. I took a guess that it was derived from the first two syllables of "My Mobile Computer".

Roger.[/QUOTE]

Would you believe if I'd tell you that it was created by a random password generator? That's the word in Nokia and our story for the press.

As much I like the coolness factor of the "i", maybe Nokia has more joy in copying other things from competitors. Because the word "tablet" has unfortunately legacy written all over it and because we need redefine what devices on Maemo are for a larger consumer segment, I doubt that Nokia will use the term "tablet" anymore in the next device.

ROTFL - Qole - You've made my day :)
In Polish it means "weather/shock/damage proof" :)
I've never thought about this word the way You've mentioned :)

Seems like that we are going to recruit you for our line building exercise for the next Maemo-based device. No, seriously. That would be kind of embarassing, something that happened to Orange in Poland with the iPhone. Based on your past contributions, you are anyway on our list of lead users to get Maemo 5 in your hands before sales start, at least for loan to get your contribution working smoothly on Maemo 5 with the power of a OMAP3 processor...

Clamshell or, maybe even nicer, something like this.

I hope that the name describes more the use, the purpose and the need than any particular form factor, since naturally there be multiple form factors.

Well, I think the "My" thing is overdone these days, and branding it as "Nokia" narrows the scope. I think we should get "Internet" in there somewhere too. How about "Internet Explo..." no, wait, that wouldn't work. ;)

My vote goes to "Netpad".

To be honest - "Mobile Internet Communicator" sounds a bit clunky to me. It does describe the functionality, but it doesn't stick in a consumers head I think...too long, and somehow a bit too generic imho, especially next to Intel's MID moniker.

I think "Netpad" is really nice - catchy & it gives you an idea of what the device does.

EDIT: then again, "pad" might not be ideal for different form-factors...

I think the slate formfactor of the 770/N800 and the slide-out form-factor of the N810 count as different...

Re: New name for internet tablet

Okay, not Mobile Internet Communicator either.

"Netpad" would be fine if were just trying to find another name for "Internet Tablet". But what if we put more features into Maemo 5 that make up a device such as most Nseries devices: high definition camera, better use for VoIP telephony, and so on? Can the word point a little bit to an crossover of a MID and a smartphone?

And good luck buying the domain first. I recently bought maemo.com, which was amazingly still available.

Sorry, I was trying to say "Can be multiple form factors". :) But it shouldn't be news even then, of course the idea of a platform is that it would support multiple different kinds of form factors.

See page 5. This thread has already been won!

I can see that making endless suggestions is important to these types of thread, but everyone should be aware that if they make a suggestion that involves more than three syllables, they will be taken out and shot.

If only "Singularity" didn't have so many syllables. Mindstep? The Shift?
