Re: My prediction: Nokia Internet Tablet will falter in 2009 and beyond
i love my tablet (i think we gathered that with the face times its had with me this year)
i think the iphone/touch are pretty little toys but as a developer would be loathed to have to fix myself to the monolithic expensive development process. (I also won't give up my stylus, finger painting is for babies) My desire, to see the maemo devices growing (both in populatity and form factors) and become the best damned OS/formfactor out there. I'm determined to do everything in my power to make this come true and I know I am not alone in this desire. the bigger picture is that iphones may shine now just as Windows has shone for a long time, but every single day the open source software ecosystem and community grows larger and more prepared. it is inevitable that we will hit critical mass soon, we have hardware coming that will blow the socks off the iphone or many of the MIDS, we will have the software libraries to utilize that raw power. I want the shinyness and differentiation shown in liqbase to be applied to everything and from the little I know of the coming libraries that will be easy. I also think this tablet_death page is silly and not helpful. People are going to move no matter what and if they want to gloat, wish them luck and let them get on with it. Hostilities and trying to retain people who don't "get" the device are futile and frankly get in the way of us trying to build the future. Can we have more discussion and expansion of ideas for a kickass PIM or the improvements to the browser or the app manager, how about discussing a desktop app for syncing and managing media? what about the things we will need for the future. its in OUR hands, lets get on and not whinge about those who don't follow our dreams. |

The N800 _MUST_ have a good PIM to succeed http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...&highlight=PIM The date of which is 17th February 2007, i.e. 1 year and 9 months ago. That same subject and the comments contained are just as pertinent today. Now which is the more tedious and boring? The regular appearance of threads such as this one or the fact that there is so little progression in functionality? Of course the one feeds the other. Quote:

remind me again, what apps specifically is the zaurus running, that handles pim related tasks?

Re: My prediction: Nokia Internet Tablet will falter in 2009 and beyond
I need PIM. Someone make an app to sync to-do and calendar stuff with Exchange, and handle Exchange email. Putting the tablet in a position where it can be used in the Enterprise will allow it to gain lots of ground. Apple had to go the way of Microsoft and Enterprise apps, so will Nokia (as they have on the Blackberry-look-a-likes).

This seems like a future to the size problem, just fold it (granted it doesn't have a keyboard)

Yay...the death-drum beats again...
Admittedly, the market viability of the Nokia Tablet is hard to predict. However, can we be clear on something? The iTouch/iPhone is NOT EQUIVALENT to the Nokia Tablet! Ugh...seriously...I own a Mac Desktop, a Mac laptop, an iPod Nano and an iPod classic, so this isn't anti-Apple. I seriously looked at the iPod touch and iPhone, but found I was better served with a Nokia N800 Tablet and a Nokia 6650 fold cellphone. The iTouch/iPhone are impressive, but they are different beast with a different purpose from the Nokia Tablet. Sure there's some overlap, but it makes as much sense as saying that a sedan is "better" than a truck. The WiBrain, the Clarion MID, and the upcoming Pandora are better examples of real competition to the Nokia Tablet. The tablet will always be a niche market (IMO) because it's geared for those that want to do complex tasks without a table top. You have the crowd that would prefer to have ONE device that does it all at all times, and so are willing to have a larger phone and work with a small screen: beefy Smartphone crowd (a growing market). You have the market who would rather have a smaller phone for most tasks, and then have a laptop or netbook for those less common times that they need to work on a spreadsheet, larger email, or do "real" web-browsing at a coffee shop, office, or plane: The "sleek" smartphone and netbook crowd. Nokia tablets are in that weird in-between space. I require a phone that fits in my pocket, is small, and has a good battery life, but still does email and RSS news, so the iPhone failed and the Nokia 6650 won. I then got the tablet for those days on the bus and train when I want to watch movies, read books, play games, write documents, etc without the bulk of a netbook and with a larger screen than an iPhone. If they could improve battery life, create a folding or roll-up screen, and have the carriers NOT lock down the phone features like crazy, then I'd be back in the market for an all-in-one. Not holding my breath on that one. As for netbooks...they're only useful if you have a table or flat-surface. A 9" screen and a miniature keyboard are murder to use on your lap. I'm aware that I'm a minority. BUT...people like me exist. There is a market, but I don't expect to ever see a variety of devices. I'll be in heaven if I have more than 5 to choose from. As for the "Tablet Death" Wiki...yah, I got a few thoughts on that. Perhaps I'll put in some thoughts. The current postings are pretty light on content and don't really make a case in either direction. - Jim |
