Solution to "Internet Tablets Will Die" Threads

In order to avoid repeating the same arguments in threads about inevitable NIT marketing failure, I have created a Wiki page:

http://wiki.maemo.org/TabletDeath

As you see, this page contains all standard arguments for NIT business failure, with standard comments on each argument. From now on, when you see yet another newbie poster bitсhing about how NITs are going to fail, do not argue. Send him/her to the above URL instead.

And besides that, if / when Nokia does drop the tablets, we can always install Android on them ;)

Re: Solution to "Internet Tablets Will Die" Threads

From reading that Wiki, i'd say that there is a 60% chance that the tablet will live and a 40% chance it will die or transform into something else.

Even if Nokia ceased to manufacture the IT it would continue on with the open source community continuing to enhance the software. A product dies when support and the promise of enhancement ends. Ultimately IT users will migrate to a newer more capable product as their needs exceed the platforms capability but there won't be a mad rush to th iPhone or other devices because the community will continue support for some time after manufacturing stops.

IIRC, there's a 0% chance that the Internet Tablets will live and a 100% chance that they will transform into something else. At least I think I've heard people say so since the Maemo Summit in Berlin.

"Being transformed into something else" in this case, though, probably means something like "growing stronger" rather than "die".

2009 will be rough for EVERY device manufacturer, even Apple and RIM. I was also concerned about the tablets losing ground... until that fact sunk in for me.

please just transform into something real - soon....
Software news might be sexy - but this product line really needs some updated hardware

Centralizing discussions is good, but wiki is not good for discussion. Merge threads about same subject, and put result of discussions in wiki.

Could this is the wrong way round?

New hardware is always interesting but there's more that can be done for the existing platform with software. I for one have mixed emotions about turning this into a carrier product with all of the feature and access lockouts demanded by the carriers.

Re: Solution to "Internet Tablets Will Die" Threads

Mixing hardware and software in these discussions is not useful.

Maemo was born with the Internet Tablets but as a software platform could end up in other kind of devices. Peter has been commenting about this in the New name for internet tablet thread.

Probably the tablets depend on Maemo (why would Nokia go for a different platform to continue this line?) but... does Maemo depend on the tablets? Certainly not, and this is why Peter was interested in stirring the naming discussion.

Our team is called "Maemo Software", it's growing and has no plans to disappear - as explained many times and this will be hopefully the last time. If you see it tied only to the concept of Internet Tablets then you are missing something. "Internet" (always connected) and "Tablet" (touchscreen) are at the very heart of the Maemo strategy, but for what is known about Fremantle (e.g. high definition camera support) it's already clear that the potential for expansion is big.

And you haven't even smelled Harmattan, which is looking good...

Why does the future always have to be "good". Why cant the present be good?

My hats off to you....given all that you have recently encountered, you are still very positive and upbeat about Nokia and the tablet's future. You could very easily be pissy about the whole thing---I hope they realize that they maybe dumped the wrong guy.

Tex, this is a common misconception spread by two generations of Europeans and Americans for which tomorrow could not be anything but better than today.

The way of life (OUR way of life) induced by this belief has led us to the point that our kids (indeed, the youngest of us too) face a paradigm change : better enjoy today, because there is a serious chance that tomorrow will be worse.

The point is that there is nothing to discuss here. The same old arguments repeat again and again. So next time they come up, you just present the happy poster with the link and send him there.

I am sure LHC will take care of this paradigm change pretty soon =)

Thanks. I actually am pissed off about losing my job, but I also realize that attitude can't interfere with the rest of my life... which includes finding my next opportunity.

Who needs an expensive LHC when dozens of Chernobyls are lying around ?

LHC, if anything, is part of the old "better future" dream.

The sentence was "And you haven't even smelled Harmattan, which is looking good..."

"is looking" is present progressive tense, not future. The fact that Harmattan looks good dosn't take away any beauty from Fremantle or the Maemo 4.x series. The fact that Harmattan is also ongoing should give a hint to those obsessed with death.
