No, it isn't.

At first I was going to say "No.", but the forum doesn't allow messages under 10 characters. :)

A nice little tidbit for you Maemo freaks :)

At Nokia World in Barcelona -- the same place where the almighty N97 (pictured) was unveiled -- Ukko Lappalainen, vice president at Nokia's markets unit, informed Reuters that "in the longer perspective, Linux will become a serious alternative for our high-end phones." Potentially more interesting was his followup line: "I don't see anything in Android which would make it better than Linux maemo."

And I'm flattered by the chat about my username :D If I told you how the name came about I'd have to kill you.

Hypothetically speaking, what would you be willing to pay to have flamingsnot change his handle to something with less grotesque imagery?

a. $1 - $10 "Please"
b. $11 - $30 "Pretty please"
c. $31 - $90 "Pretty please with sugar on top"
d. >$90 "Change it, motherf*cker!"
e. nothing "What's all the fuss?"
f. donate to flamingsnot "Your handle is my bag, baby"

I'll start: d

How about

G. STOP SPAMMING, motherf*cker ;) And pm me if you want my Paypal details, I'll be taken payments for a change of username starting from now.

It's one word, no capitals, and I fail to see any relationship between my username and my opinion on the aesthetics of an electronic device, let alone any irony

To my mind, it seems like it does not have the most distinctive and important parts of the NIT.

Well the first thing I noticed about the homescreen interface was the widgets, which look suspiciously similar to the ones on the NIT homescreens... And to be honest, considering the amount of research they now have on their touchscreen internet devices I don't see why they wouldn't incorporate certain parts of these into their new touchscreen phones. All the pieces of the puzzles are coming together. Like it's been said in the past, the NITs are experimental and the users are labrats, Nokia clearly have a wider strategy for these things, where's the sense in creating a bunch of devices for a few linux developers when they can incorporate what they've learnt from us NIT owners into a more mass market product? I wouldn't be surprised if the 'n900' is a larger N97 with maemo...

If N900 is simply larger than N97 then it's also more expensive.

That's intriguing. I'll have to watch a demo and see, and think where widgets fit in on a historical perspective. Thanks for pointing that out. Also, I have to look at what that other button(?) on the front panel does.

I think all in all it seems like a nice evolution (or should I say fulfillment of potential) of the S60 communicator, the keyboard and D-pad for example. One guy said simply the TS was taken from the NIT which I found plainly wrong, since TS was on previous symbian phones and other devices.

Well obviously lacking the 5mp camera(?) and perhaps some other features. Actually I just thought of something, if Nokia use Maemo, do they not have to pay anything to anyone? Does that contribute to the price of the NITs?

You can see a brief example of the homescreen widgets in the video on this page

http://events.nokia.com/nokiaworld/home.htm

At around 28 seconds :) Yes you're right, to say that the TS was taken from the NITs would be naive and wrong, but to say that Nokia have incorporated parts of the scheme and programme from the NIT design into the N97 and most likey future TS devices would be more of a correct summary, imho.

If it had been two words, you could have accused them of jumping to conclusions. For I had always thought it was short for "avoid flamings, not constructive feedback." :)

That's the ironic part. open source software is supposed to be cheaper than other software, but the NITs are not cheaper. While Maemo is based on open source, and is relatively open, its advantage to the user is not price. The advantage to the user is that it's a better OS for handheld touchscreen devices. Most of the advantages are on the SW developer side. So far, Nokia hasn't sought to license Maemo.
