What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
Just for kicks, I thought I would pose a fun question to you all:
What have you named your tablets, and what was the reason? Perhaps we can run a poll on the best name at the end of the day. EIPI: Mine is named X-Wing, since I have a Star Wars theme going on in my home network. My servers are named for droids, and my desktops are named after planets in the SW universe. Ship names made sense for portable devices. And yes, my invisible SSID is 'The Force'. |
Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
I love my old battered Millenium Falcon!

Dang I did not see that thread. Hopefully I won't get in trouble from the mods - oh wait there are none (yet)!

Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
"littlemonster" according to DNS, "Nokia-N810-23-14" by default. "littlemonster" is part of my theme at home - godzilla, ghidora, etc ... (Originally I had it convinced that it's own name was something more creative from the godzilla line of movies, but it got lost during one of the reflashings, and I never really noticed .....)

Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
The 770 is called NokiLL0, the N800 NaB00. Although the latter is temporarily -- and more correctly -- named "B0rked".

Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
My tablet (N800) is named theMicro (in form with my other machines, theMachine = desktop PC, thePhone = phone, theBeast = T61p laptop, and theCubed = server)
theMicro was named 'Master Hacklet' for a while just to freak out the sysadmins at my other school when they checked the DHCP logs :) |
Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
My 770 is Mjolnir, my N810 is Dream (my laptop being named Dreamer) :D

BlackHole
Free time just seems to disappear when it's around my tablet... |
Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
Name: Kraft.
Why? It was the name of the optronic computer owned by Axen Moon in the story of Outpost 2. Sort of his digital counterpart in the world, even though he only generally talked with it via link or directly [it was a big 1m cube box, not so portable]. Good lord; can't believe I remembered that. Still, great name. It's counterpart in Plymouth was... err... damn, so much for memory. I'll have to look it up now [sigh, yes, I still have the disk]. What's worse is that it totally bypasses the normal naming scheme for my computers, strange choice. |
Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
name: Truc
was so named by my (francophone) girlfriend, which had no clue how to define it (Le Truc = The Thing) she says she's very proud to be the second in my life just after Le Truc :D |
Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
Name: Navi
Quote (stolen from some page): NAVI are the personal computers that people use in the world of serial experiments lain. They include both desktop and handheld models (HandyNAVI). NAVI computers are linked to the Wired. Interpretation: "NAVI" is most likely a contracted form of "Knowledge Navigator." John Sculley, the CEO of Apple from 1983 to 1993, described the Knowledge Navigator in his book titled Odyssey (1987). The Knowledge Navigator was his vision of Apple computers in the 21st Century. Accurately predicting many of the changes eventually brought about by the World Wide Web, the hypothetical Knowledge Navigator would allow people to communicate with each other from anywhere in the world, would be connected to a vast shared hypertextual (Sculley cites Ted Nelson in reference to hypertext) database of information (like the Web or the Wired), and would also utilize intelligent agents or artificial intelligences to actively search out information of interest. The Knowledge Navigator Sculley envisioned in 1987 would be suited for multimedia applications, utilizing large, high-definition, flat-display screens to support text, full-color, graphics, and computer generated animations. It would also feature high-fidelity sound, speech synthesis, and speech recognition. Sculley emphasized that the Knowledge Navigator would not need to take any specific form; it could be a desktop computer, a handheld, or even built into one's clothing. Eventually, Sculley would implement some of his Knowledge Navigator ideas into the Newton, Apple's more-or-less unsuccessful PDA (personal digital assistant). The Knowledge Navigator concept was promoted in a video called "The Knowledge Navigator: Technologies to Get Us There and Beyond" as well as a shorter commercial for general consumption. John Sculley's vision of the Knowledge Navigator, even if not fully realized, was important for the technologies it inspired as well as predicting the change of the personal computer's role as a productivity tool to one which is used to mediate information exchange and transfer. |
Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
pocketpenguin is the network name as it is a Penguin (Linux box) in your pocket.

Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
The tablet has got the name "padlog", while the phone is named "comlog" after the fictional all-in-one device from The Hyperion Cantos.

Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
Hi there. My first post ...
My N810 is called 'brinquedinho', means 'little toy' em portuguese. There is no special reason for that (maybe the size of this gadget). []´s Fernando São Paulo - Brazil |
Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?

gypsy; it travels around the world and hacks around (artificial) barriers to get what it wants :)

Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
Man, am I the only one who just calls it "The Tablet"?
|
Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
My first post -- my n800 just arrived yesterday. I called it "burro" since I expect it to follow around behind me, carry things, and do hard work. Might be fun to change the name from time to time.
In the Arthur C. Clarke novel "Imperial Earth" people of the future have a networked PDA gadget called a "minisec". That could work. |

Darkside was used in an early Mandrake distro (now Mandriva). I use it with all my PC and 770/810 installations. No particular reason for doing so.

Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
My desktop is orcrist, my media/fileserver is sting & my laptop is glamdring. Naturally then my IT had to have the grandest name, being the smallest, so I call it GROND! :)

Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
My old N800 that I've since given to my sister was named DIRGE, and the newer one I still have is named RAVAGE.
In my house, there's a Decepticon theme. My main server at home is named UNICRON (because it's the biggest and fastest machine in the house), my laptop is named BARRICADE, my NAS system is named FRENZY, my scratchbox system is named GALVATRON (since it used to be named MEGATRON before I pretty much re-built it, appropriately), my old router computer (which is now another scratchbox) is named RAMPAGE, etc.. etc.. :) |

Saul -
All my electronic devices have gender-appropriate names starting with the letter "S" and taken from relevant religious fables. Why I started such a tradition? I don't know. My Palm III was named Sita, and even my HP48 was named Sisyphus. |
Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
I've named my tablet <unknown> and phone N/A just because it causes confusion :)

Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
Did I miss something here?
The BLUETOOTH name is what you advertise when you connect via BT. The DEVICE name is what shows on a network when you connect which by default contains the OS version. How do you change the DEVICE name? |

Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
I named my n800 Sleipnir (my Zodiac 2 is Hugin and the backup Z is Munin, so I thought I'd continue the theme).
In retrospect, "Slider" is perhaps not the best name for a fragile mobile device... |
Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
I named mine Shrike.
Originally, my naming scheme was scifi ships, eventually I played Eve Online and took up the Caldari naming scheme, and have named all of my computing devices random birds. also: Shrikes are medium-sized birds, up to 50 centimetres (approximately 19.7 inches) in length, with grey, brown, or black and white plumage. Their beaks are hooked, like that of a bird of prey, reflecting their predatory nature, and their calls are strident. Shrikes are known for their habit of catching insects, small birds, or mammals and impaling their bodies on thorns. This helps them to tear the flesh into smaller, more conveniently-sized fragments, and serves as a "larder" so that the shrike can return to the uneaten portions at a later time. |
Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
My tablet doesn't have a name.
Damn, you guys are geeks! :p |
Re: What is your Tablet's Device Name, and Why?
You can edit /etc/hostname as root in a terminal window to change the Device name.
Just what do I use to "edit" this file to change the hostname? |
