Can I upload a full dvd movie
 

I've searched here but can't find if I am able to upload a full version of a DVD movie to the Nokia800.


what do I need to do? I know that I can't copy it so once I put the dvd in the laptop then what?

Yes you can.

First, you have to turn the DVD into a video file. (look online for DVD to iPhone)

Then, drag the video into your SD card.

Pop the card into the N800, and click the movie.

Make sure that you cut the DVD video resolution at least by half. The tablet cannot play hi-res videos very well. QVGA resolution (320x240) gives good results.

Please remember that I am referring to full blown DVD movies that I own, so do you think that I could convert them to run on my Nokia. So I have to do is to download the free trial run, and it will let me convert a full blown DVD movie with no problem. I thought that the copyright crap will be blocking from doing this

According what you said the App for the Iphone would work with the Nokia, I don't want to buy the software I've seen a couple that offer free trial how reliable are they.

Try to avoid the stupid free trials. Look for software that is Open Source or Freeware.

Looks like Snoshrk has posted a good tutorial.

I personally use DVD Decrypt, then DVD Shrink, then Handbrake, then PocketDivX...

Edit: DVD Decrypt has been "removed", so get it via torrent (or a shady website if that is your thing). Its a really good software, mostly because it (was) free.

I have downloaded some stuff via torrents but there is a price, they are loaded with junk that screwed my system but got ducies stuff.snoshrk hmm I need to search for that name

I have had really good luck with DvDShrink as long as the DVD is not super current. Dvd Decrypter is the fall back when 'Shrink fails. I just recently tried RipItForMe on Wal-E to put it on my son's iPod -Paying double for the "portable" file really p'd me off. Took a while but was finally successful.

BTW Google'd DvD Decrypter still lots of links to download it!;)

Once you have the file on your computer .... you might check out (search) N800 Convert & Nokia's Internet Tablet Video Converter.

So far I rip everything to .VOB (DvDShrink -just the movie) but I have not figured out a good compromise between file size and quality (:o open to suggestions :o ) as I will eventually stream them to my tv (probably XBMC on an old laptop).

Shrink ...Handbrake.. then PocketDivx (encoder?) What does the last step do for you?

wow it sounds very complicated, hmmm I feel like I'm leaning toward taking my laptop

Does it make any difference if I own the dvd? or is it better to download the movie as a torrent or other site? I am leaving tomorrow afternoon I don't think that I have the time for all that.

The bottom line is that I have to rip it first, but again I am not sure if it's worth the trouble cuz if I go through all the motion to rip and then to find out that ooops "you cant't dup or rip it" just a thought.

I am packing now so no time to do any testing. As a matter of fact, I put another posting about using Google doc and haven't heard from anyone

I take it you're under US law, under which there have been arguments advanced that downloading a copy of a work which you already own is precisely as legal as ripping; that is, it depends whether what you do with the copy is fair use. Downloading a movie you don't own is pretty unambiguously copyright infringement, which may certainly be argued to make a difference.

I'm not sure how that actually fares in court, but if you're content from ethical and legal perspectives, you may be better off downloading than trying to figure out the software, though you'll likely get worse results.

Key points about downloading movies: just like ripping it yourself, you need to match codec, bitrate, and resolution to what the tablet can manage.

In general, I think that means DivX, ~1000 kb/s, and no more than ~512px wide. (I don't watch videos on my tablet much, so this is mainly hearsay...) 400x240 is appealing as full-screen scaling then becomes exact pixel-doubling, but I'm not sure it has any real advantage over near-miss sizes, and it isn't likely you'll find files pre-encoded to that.

If you can't find pre-encoded files suitable, and still go with downloading over ripping, you can scale and re-encode to suit using any of the tablet video encoding projects, or directly (with more control) using mencoder in UNIX or SUPER (which is actually mencoder, etc. repackaged with a GUI) in Windows. Obviously quality suffers by re-encoding though, unless the downloaded file was much higher quality than the final (such as a direct DVD rip), so you're better off ripping from disk and encoding once if you can.
