Looks like the OS on this device(maimo? ;) ) has some nice features.
Nokia should borrow some of the ideas

Quite hard to see but you have to look very closely at the pictures. The similarity is not easy to see. :D

Re: n800's brother in china

My god, I if could understand anything on it, I would buy it. The form and the hardware are what the N800 could/should have been... Damn. I mean, damn.

Re: n800's brother in china

It doesn't look bad and the docking station is a nice idea. The Chinese are getting better and better at copying stuff. :)
Let's hope Nokia learns from its competitors. :)

Re: n800's brother in china

This is really cool. I really like the idea of a docking station with VGA out and added battery life. If this came in English and HSDPA form it would be a pretty good device.

Re: n800's brother in china

The Chinese do that kind of stuff very well now, whey do the still have to steal the designs?

If it came in English I would replace my N800 with it.

VGA, even! That is some sweet hardware.

Software-wise, it's not straight-up Maemo, but I'd bet the theme at least is derivative... (you know, the part that's not open).

But the weirdness maxes out with Word and Excel. Why don't we have those! (Somehow I think those names are also appropriated without regard to trademarks, and applied to some generic word processor and spreadsheet.)

I've never even heard of that processor type.

How much does this thing cost?

Frank Banul 2008-12-17 21:21

Re: n800's brother in china

The processor is a Marvell PXA3xx (guessing, it could be a pxa27x but that's a bit older processor). It's an ARM Xscale. http://www.marvell.com/products/cell...plications.jsp

I wouldn't mind having a Chinese UI. The dictionary is not far away. :)

Well, Shan Zhai Ji (Mountain Bandit Device) is certainly not the name of the device. It's a term for unauthorized cell-phone-clones manufactured in China. Of course the device is a Shan Zhai Ji in some way, but that's not its name.

Wow, that device looks really cool! :D

It looks like they are using a modified version of hildon allong with possibly a ubuntu-mid base...

If that device's operating system is open-sorce, mabe we could somehow port that desktop to Mer.... or even maemo. :)

the google translation says that it is a prototype. The theme looks quite nice.

Re: n800's brother in china

There are so many "prototypes" that are made in China but never see the light of day. I bet this is one of them too that just disappears over night. Let's hope it's not true but I'd probably earn some money if I did put a wager on it. :)

Yes! That's what we should have had.

I believe this is based off of the Ubuntu armel port, with open source apps taken from maemo.org. And it looks like they're ripping off some of the graphics (and probably some of the closed source bits, too) from maemo.

I guarantee that it is the Hildon desktop, probably, as b-man says, based off of the Ubuntu variant, just like Mer.

I'm sure that those are pirated icons used for OpenOffice, again probably from the Ubuntu armel distro.

I wonder if the desktop icons are Personal Launcher?

this link provides (http://mobile.pconline.com.cn/market...2/1503099.html) more photo and a slightly more detail writeup for this new device.

yes, I wants one. by the way, I don't think it has GPS.

Also according to some of the people leaving comment after the article: it may cost $2800 RMB(ie. about $412US with today's exchange rate) for a standard unit(ie. without the "communication" portion, I guess it means no 3Gs) and a $4300 for the fully loaded one. The available date will be around June 2009.

Has anyone tried contacting WooJoy directly to inquire about the device's plans for existence? I was just looking briefly at www.woojoy.com, and found this if it helps someone...http://www.woojoy.com/contact.html

BTW, if it runs on CDMA cellular data, is that compatible with US CDMA i.e Verizon or Sprint?

A lot can be done clocked @ 160% higher than we now have.

...not to mention other goodies. :)

Let me guess...

You are affiliated with either ZhongYi or WooJoy and this thread was part of a promotional campaign. Otherwise you wouldn't have teased us and instead provided all info in the first post. ;)
Well done, though. It was fun hunting this thing down on the messy pconline.com.cn site.
