Wayfinder map app update (2.2.8.604) - thoughts

Alright. Lets hear peoples experiences with the new updated map application (2.2.8.604). I know the built in map application isn't the greatest out there in terms of functionality, ease of use, price for licenses, actual updated maps, etc. But I still like it. For it makes my N810 closer to an all-in-one device keeping me from lugging so many different gadgets around all with separate power supplies...

So for me, the biggest, most annoying bug in previous versions was not being able to calculate a route when not being close enough to an actual road on the map.

But for version 2.2.8.604 it works! It just breathed a bit more use/life into my N810 as now the sat nav with route calculation actually works if you're not close enough to a road - awesome.

There's still a lot that can/could be done to the actual map app to make it much more functional, but at least it's good to know that they are still working on it... and it's actually getting better.

So anybody else notice any changes?

I noticed that plan a route option is now available from the menus. In some previous versions you had to disable GPS to be able to set the starting point.

Regarding the pricing I like the fact that I can buy a 1 month license for ~10e to an area I will most likely never need again.

I can't seem to find this route option. Where is it and how it works?

Once I was able to make it compute a route (out of Trial mode). It was simply not speaking.
I can't seem to do it anymore.

You need an activated version of Wayfinder, either via a 7 day trial or with a license. With the new version of map, once your NIT has a GPS lock you can simply long tap anywhere on the map and a pop-up box appears, then you select "navigate to" and it calculates a route and starts giving you voice guidance. You can also calculate routes via address, cities, POI's, etc.

With voice guidance, you must have at least one voice installed in the navicore folder where all your maps are stored. So in a N810 with Saras voice it'd be:

Code:

/media/mmc2/map/navicore/sounds/sound_eng/Sara (US)
I cut up MR T's voice and put it on my N810... it's awesome when my N810 yells at me to "TURN RIGHT FOOL!"

I found the prior version would sometimes go into1 "always have north at the top mode" which I dislike while navigating. Tapping the compass or the view menu orientation option wouldn't fix it unless I
- menu tap select the turn map north
- press the full screen toggle button twice to force a repaint
- menu tap deselect the turn map north
- again press the full screen toggle button twice to force a repaint
and often, but not always, it would be oriented correctly. I do NOT recommend you do that procedure while driving -- even those of you who use it while biking. ;-)

I'll see if that behavior has been fixed.

I've downloaded and extracted that voice, and it's pretty rubbish to tell the truth. doesn't sound much like KITT at all.

I'm using T-Mobile W'n'W plus in UK and the traffic updates don't work over 3G on latest version of MAP only via Wifi (so no change there). I have to say that the traffic data I have seen have been completely unreliable - I have never found a benefit from altering my route because of them - they always seem out of date or inaccurate. - so the fact I can't get live updates of them on the road hasn't really been much of a loss.

I think they've made it easier to see the overview of the calculated route. The button that you press to see the whole route now displays it for longer (was about 0.2 seconds or something stupid). It also seems easier to browse and zoom in on the route. For me, thats a useful improvement.

There's lots of things I would still like to see improved that could be done very easily.

I'll check this out, it has the possiblity of being useful if it stayed on the screen long enough fo you to read it!

For me the overview stays on the screen for a whole 3 seconds now. Which is still next to useless. TomTom used to offer a "view route" option with both text and map views. And it stayed on screen until you exited it. Now that was useful.

Yes, this is one of the thing I most miss from the TomTom that I used to run on my TH55 :(

Also, I would like that it turned the big keyboard on by default a là Canola, instead of bringing the standard one...

The overview display is shown all the time u depress the distance button ->· so no change in behaviour for me. If u tap the button, u get a brief pulse of the overview as before.

Nice u can set a route before it gets a GPS fix as u sit in the car setting it up..

What I have noticed for 1st time is it has started to suggest fast routes thru central London rather than M25 to get to Heathrow from bottom of M11! It goes 100yards from Buckingham Palace - mad. And it asks if u want to allow routeing thru Congestion Charge area - despite saying no tollroads in options. Very annoying and brain dead.

Re: Wayfinder map app update (2.2.8.604) - thoughts

I just used my N810 to navigate from NY to Chicago. So here is my experiences...

First, I got a GPS fix with the N810's built in GPS within about a minute and a half while driving from a cold start. The weather was snowing so I was surprised to see such a quick lock.

The route calculated perfectly. Voice guidance was pretty accurate in giving prompts about distance with upcoming turns and exits. I didn't have one missed turn or exit so I was happy. Got me exactly where I was going on a long trip with no mistakes.

In Chicago, we were using my friends stand alone GPS (Mio - don't recall the model number) and we were searching for a "Trader Joes." The stand alone GPS could only find "Joe Trader" so we thought it must be a typo. Nope, it wasn't. So we lost about an hour after fighting traffic. We go home and I grab my N810. Open up map and search for "Trader Joes" and bam... like 5 locations come up. I was totally shocked that my N810 could find Trader Joes but my friends stand alone GPS could not.

This is strange... I had to make a quick trip to the post office so I grab my N810 and start map... do a POI search for post offices and tons come up... cool. But what sucked is that the closest one map could find was 3.3 miles away. I knew one was closer so I hop online and sure enough, 1 is only a half mile away. And what sucks more is that map had a post office POI icon where the post office was on the actual map, but doing a POI search could not find it.

Another thing I'd like to see is the ability to change the pointer color and remove the ring around it. When you are using the day setting, the color of the pointer is not much different than the background color... not a big deal, but if it were red or blue it'd be easier to see at a quick glance.

So even tho the map application has a bunch of stuff that could be done to make it a much better app, I still use it and like it. It's got it's +'s and it's -'s.

London has an enormous orbital motorway, the M25. If you imagine a clock, the M11 (Cambridge to London) joins at about 1 o'clock (about J24 IIRC). Heathrow is at about 9 o'clock (J15).

The fastest way from where the M11 joins the M25 to Heathrow (London's biggest airport) is to go anti-clockwise around the M25. Depending on the time of day, this should take (OTTOMH) about 30-45 minutes.

An alternative route would be to drive all the way in to the centre of London and back out again. This would mean you were liable to pay London's Congestion Charge. This route would take you about 90 minutes, be hell to drive and cost you money.

If Wayfinder are now suggesting routes through the centre of London, the routing algorithm is now seriously FUBAR.

Either that or Wayfinder is getting a kickback from London's congestion system ;)

Ok, I see. Similar problems here in Germany. Larger cities have some kind of environmental zone and you need a badge to drive threw these zones. My car is to old to get such a badge and Wayfinder doesn't know anything about this system. Here in Köln (Cologne) Wayfinder is often useless for me :(

As no traffic problems on M25 were shown that morning, it must be the new Map (v2.2.8.604) 's algorithm has been changed - this congestion charge feature may have been there already but not showing to me before - the thing has been around for almost 6 years!

Apart from the above and the ability to route before GPS fix, I see nothing else new in 2.2.8.604.

Re: Wayfinder map app update (2.2.8.604) - thoughts

I'm experiencing two types of problems with the latest Firmware and Map application (2.2.8.604), which I didn’t have with OS 2007 version. I have N800 and Nokia LD-3W GPS module.

First problem is that the location on the map and, also, the current speed indicator are updated very “slowly”. The location indicator is far behind the location where I actually am. When I stop it eventually catches me up. Also, it takes few seconds for the speed indicator to show the actual speed.
The GPS module should send updates once every second and this was the update speed with the previous version of Map.

The other problem is that if I shut down the GPS receiver Map application won’t notice it. Nor will it notice when I turn it back on. To make the Map to get data from the GPS again I will have restart the Map application. The previous version always noticed when the connection to the GPS was lost. The “speaker” constantly complained about it. When GPS was turn on again it started working normally.

Anyone experienced this kind of behavior?

Hmm, it does support avoiding ferries.

Have you seen this functionality in other navigation software?

Have you tried using/importing POI?

Google maps used to tell you to swim across the ocean if you asked for directions to go, say, from Barcelona to New York. Avoiding ferries by default :D

It will ignore the option (or ask you what to do) and provide the next best alternative. For example drive around, under a tunnel... which might or might not be a toll road.

In some countries, toll roads are more common than other. And there restrictions everywhere on roads.

It'd be a great feature if navigation software would include this feature, but its quite a task to implement this!

Interesting, as on Thursday, my copy started crashing. After re-flashing, andd reinstallation and fresh map downloads I still have the problem, but I have now isolated it to whenever I try to connect to download traffic or poi updates.

Coincidence?

Re: Wayfinder map app update (2.2.8.604) - thoughts

I just e-mailed wayfinder asking them if there was a problem with their servers as my speed camera and traffic info updates also crashed the map application. When I set the traffic info update from manual to 10 minutes, I couldn't even start the application without it crashing, so I had to rename my european map on the internal memory so the application would default to my West coast America map.

I'm glad I checked the forum because I was thinking it was something to do with my maps. I uninstalled the map application, reinstalled a fresh copy of the U.K map, reactivated the license, but it still crashed when doing an update.

Hopefully wayfinder will get back to me with a reason after contacting them.

I just downloaded and started playing around with Wayfinder today on my N800, and have a problem when I go to find an address. If I click in the street field, the online keyboard that comes up doesn't have numbers on it (the number pad area has symbols instead) and I can't figure out how to input numbers. The fields for city and number both work fine. Anyone else seen this or have a suggestion for a fix?

I noticed that too. I think the reason is because it puts the on-screen-keyboard in uppercase mode, which also replaces the numbers with symbols (just like when you press shift). To enter numbers just press the shift button, which will put it back in lowercase, and enable the numbers again. (It's quite annoying, especially if you live in a city where the streetnames are numbers.)

Anybody notice behavior like this?

- Tap find something
- Tap favorite.
- Tap the push pin, select Navigate to
- Rather than computing a route it goes back to the find favorites/address/town/etc screen.
- Re-tap favorite and maybe after two or three tries it goes to compute the route.

This might happen most often when GPS location hasn't established. Not sure about that.

I have 2.2.8.604 on an N810 with diablo.

Yes, its very annoying. Only happens when GPS is starting up and hasn't yet fully initialised I think.

Re: Wayfinder map app update (2.2.8.604) - thoughts

The navicore application is in fact capable of avoiding ferries as well as congestion routes.
However the wayfinder UI does not provide buttons for this.
It is possible to change settings manually in /home/user/.navicore/settings.txt
0=avoid
1=allow
2=ask
Nevertheless, in my case the programm avoided the use of a ferry even set to "shortest way".
The sollution was to choose the ferryhouse as the first waypoint, resulting in a much shorter route.
Using "bicycle" mode, the app used the ferry connection right from the start.

Hopefully this information is of interrest at least to someone ;-)
