If by "manually recode" you mean "fundamentally rewrite", yes.

There was some discussion in an earlier thread about developing an application which would work in both (with a recompile); but that would have to be specifically designed to do such.

Hmmm...It might be more accurate to think of it as "writing a new app for the tablet that does roughly the same thing as one for the iPod." You might be able to use some of the code for the iPod version as a reference, but that's probably about it. Out of curiosity, which app is it that you're interested in?
