I wish Nokia would do something tangible sooner than later.. there's some very good competition out there rearing up. I saw this one pretty recently and it looks very attractive:

I don't see competition at all.
I see a lot of nice *hardware*, but no UI is jumping out at me that makes me even want to jump *.

*heh, well I know what UI i want ;)

Twenty-eight years ago I had a physical mock up of a lightsaber. The finished device still hasn't shipped.

More seriously, I give you: The Pandora!

Yea, to be quite honest, I'm more a believer in the "we're spending our time building a real product, we'll let you know when it's ready" approach compared to "and here's another beautiful piece of plastic that our marketing department things looks pretty sweet... what engineers? Yea, we asked them what the best components would be, but we didn't want them involved in the mock-ups... they always take the fun out of those things by demanding practical and producible results!".
lol that's just my take anyways ;o) In all seriousness, a mockup is a good step (especially if it's actually a proto-type with some good, serious effort behind it), but the difference between proto-type and finished product is usually quite large; and I'm not a big fan of sales pitches, so for me it's always who gets to the real, in your hand device that I can buy and use for my purposes first; all the rest of the bs in between is just to try and distract you from the time it takes to actually build a product from scratch.
(Btw, if you're that eager for mockups, I could throw together an RX-51 for you, no problemo... it probably has as much hope of resembling the final device and functionality as any other early stage mockup does! ;o) )

Re: Where is Nokia - no announcement no product - still in hibernation

I really believe that what the Russian journalist Eldar Murtazin saw in the MWC meeting (see this article) was a functioning prototype of a Maemo 5 device. I strongly believe that it was probably an RX-51 prototype. Nokia is probably quite relieved that the UnwiredView people spun it as a Sparrow device to be released in 2011.

I mean, think about it. It seems that the prototype was actually running an OS. What kind of "early prototype" has a polished-looking OS running on it?

Frustratingly, the article doesn't mention the D-Pad's location. ;) (Their photoshop mock-up just guesses based on the N97's placement.)

This seems like a likely possibility. The discussion of a "widget-based" interface threw me initially (they've traditionally been called "applets"), but the alpha release revealed that they are, now, in fact, widgets.

Re: Where is Nokia - no announcement no product - still in hibernation

This is probably a stupid comment, but what's the device in the OS2008 "Getting Started" applet if not the RX-51? It sure isn't an N800 or N810.

In that article, it says:

It will have multi-slide keyboard, with different layouts/keys revealed as you slide it in different directions.
Do you think this multi-slide keyboard with varying layouts has anything to do with the odd keyboard map that was spotted for the RX-71?

Thanks! And I'm glad to see you got your new avatar showing us all what a Qole is.

I suspect you're correct that Eldar Murtazin saw an RX-51 prototype, because there's no way there could be a prototype of the Sparrow device yet. His description of a small keyboard and a dual slider makes me think of the Samsung F520, which could also explain the 18-key secondary keymap.

Just imagine a device where you slide it one way for a Maemo computer and the other way for a phone. I'd buy one of those, even if it had diamond shaped keys.

Regards,
Roger

Mr. Wagner is attempting to link this chart inline. It shows that in this down market, Nokia's dominance of the so-called smartphone market has fallen from 23.4% to 20.3% above its closest competitor.

Re: Where is Nokia - no announcement no product - still in hibernation

I don't care about smartphones. This isn't a forum about smartphones. The current NITs have very little to do with the phones with the tiny screens and some limited abilities to schedule appointments, check e-mail and browse the net.

frank.wagner: Your impatience is not Nokia's problem. If you could find something else that satisfied you, you wouldn't keep posting here. The new device is coming, probably this summer. Nokia doesn't tend to announce a long time in advance like other companies do.

In fact, they do. Some of their phones were announced with a release date of 6-9 months in the future. (although this may also depend on the region... I remember models being sold in Russia and the far east looong before they were available in central Europe.)

It's funny that usually with the tablets they start selling a short time after the official announcement.

Woo! Already bought my mini9 to satisfy my new portable gadget itch. Hopefully, this will buy me some patience until this new device comes out. heheh :) I would like to see it sooner than later, but now that I can't afford it again--I can certainly wait.

OK.. so, now.. Nokia.. take your time. ;)

Yes, the N97 is a case in point - announced way in advance of release.
Many - in fact most cm[panies tend to do this.

I wish with the Tablets Nokia is somwhat like Apple (oh there we go again - another apple comparison) - make an announcement and start selling the day after.

Of course I do know that with the N800 it started selling the day before. So I am not really taking issues with Nokia and its tablet strategy.

For the Mini 9, try the Dell Outlet store, cheaper and ships the same day.

Oh, and I hear Mac OS X runs beautifully on it.

Ach, there's always something else to buy while waiting for new stuff. I am, for example, waiting for the Pandora, then I can start waiting for anything new from Nokia later. As the Pandora is delayed there was too much unplanned waiting, which I filled in by ordering a new guitar amp. Got it yesterday, yay! Now hoping that the gap until the Pandora won't be too long, but there's a chance that new company phones will enter in the meantime. Or, maybe the Beagleboard rev. C comes at the end of March, then I can order one and wait for it. I'm not waiting for the OP to stop whining about Nokia though, because I don't think that will ever happen.. ;)

Does it strike anybody as odd that N810 supplies seem to be practically dried up? Many online retailers (e-tailors, if you will) seem to have none or very few units available. The prices on Ebay have soared of late, with few deals to be found (a sign of low supply?).

Could this be the calm before the storm? The N810WME was announced on April 1st. Could this be the magic date the N900 is released on?

I'm just about to purchase an N810, but my gut says wait a wee bit.

What do you all think? I really need your help!

If the prices have soared, maybe wait -- I'm sure they'll drop back to ~$210 when the RX-51 is announced, maybe even down to $190. I don't think I'd go for an N810 if I thought it would hinder my ability to pay $500 for an RX-51 when it comes out, but I did, despite having enough N800s to keep me happy, spring for one at $219, and I'm not entirely sure I disapprove of that purchase. (EDIT: What I mean is, I'm not sure it was stupid, because there was no way for me to really try an N810 without risking some money. I am sure that, already owning my N800s, I wouldn't have bought it if I knew what I do now; if I were starting with no N800, though, I'd go for an N810 over an N800 at current prices, because I do hack a lot, and the keyboard's good for that.)

I'd bet against April 1 specifically, but it could be tomorrow, or it could be 3 months yet -- and once it's announced, we still don't know when it'll ship.

Re: Where is Nokia - no announcement no product - still in hibernation

The next device isn't coming on April 1st. They haven't released the Beta SDK yet. The most likely release date is this Summer.

If you've got the cash, get the N810. Its a great device :)

(disclaimer: I don't own an N810, I own 2 N800s)

Umm... yeah, see my clarification.

If it doesn't make sense how you could consider a purchase you wouldn't have made if you'd known more to be non-stupid, think about college tuition for a moment. ;)

I really do like it, and I'm working on a review now, pending a little testing. Would you believe, I've had the N810 for about a month, and still haven't done an audio head-to-head?

Re: Where is Nokia - no announcement no product - still in hibernation

Thanks for the input guys/gals/guals.

I have been thoroughly convinced that despite speculation of the release, this would be a great product to buy. Having had the opportunity to use the N810, I know I'd love (and have MANY uses for) it regardless of weather a new version came out or not. Of course, the ideal-consumer in me was weighing perfect-substitutes, phantom or otherwise.

But as fate would have it, on this cold Canadian morn, I am having trouble getting in touch with a seller that has the one I would like to buy in stock. I'm prepared to purchase this unit today, so hopefully I hear back. If I don't hear back from this gual, I'm going to have to wait another week (at least) before I move forward.

I've got both fingers crossed!
