Yeah, WebKitGtk is being actively developed so it is likely that it will break from time to time. Or maybe one of my changes breaks it.

@Bundyo
Do you have a standard way to get feature requests other than putting them here into the forum?
I'm asking because i'd like to request the following feature: in Firefox you can maximize the Browser, then press F11 to make the website fullscreen, and by moving the cursor to the top you make the navigation and tab bar slide out. Would be nice to have something similar in tear, as the adresss bar takes up quite some space...
Anyway, you've done a good job so far! Keep it up!

i guess there is always the feature requests at garage.maemo.org...

I read here more often than I go to the project page :)

Something similar already was requested though.

On screenshot01 here it shows some radio buttons which aren't transparent. Instead they're the same as my theme, making them in this case not blend in with the webpage.

On screenshot02 a huge dialog when I try to select a file to upload. But that is probably not related to Tear itself.

Re: Tear 0.3 - Simple WebKit browser, now with Dashboard

Hey I was trying to answer some of my questions about this project because I just don't like the waiting during browsing. I'm using S60browser these days, and its fast (and integrated RSS reader in Bookmarks), but for good browsing nowadays a pointer device such as a touchscreen or mouse is IMO sometimes a necessity. Especially for browsing through a website, or selecting links is sometimes cumbersome on S60browser. So I'm going to try Tear a bit here and there next week, over HSDPA.

What current problems does Tear solve (what does it do)?
* Alternative browser and rendering engine for MicroB providing a faster experience.

What significant additional features does Tear provide?
* Dashboard. 'Opera Speed Dial' equivelant, but more advanced
* Kinetic scrolling
* Standards compliant. Acid3 100/100
* Download manager. WIP; unfinished

Is it stable enough to replace MicroB by default?
* Yes, but... (list outstanding bugs?)

Re: Tear 0.3 - Simple WebKit browser, now with Dashboard

I was looking at the radio/checkboxes the other night - they're too big anyway so i'll see if i can get them more normal.

tso 2009-02-13 13:31

Re: Tear 0.3 - Simple WebKit browser, now with Dashboard

Maybe have them scale with the zoom level?

Btw, i bumped into something of a bug relating to dropdown lists.

If one tap a list, then tap outside of it to have it go away, then tap another list, the first list is shown again. One have to tap outside of the first list twice for the second list to correctly show.

Also, if the list is very long, it will get up to max screen size, but the content will start where the list is located on the page, not at the top of the list shown. End result is a list thats mostly empty until one use the scroll arrows.

Too big for finger or for stylus?

On S60, eBay with its many links and tons of items was difficult to use in S60Browser. So I tethered and fired up Tear. I couldn't get numbers (Fn keys) to work in Tear so when I was in store yesterday seeing what something costs on eBay instead of the store Tear was cumbersome to use. Speedwise, performance was good. Seemed better than MicroB according to my feelings.

Hi,

I'm new here. Someone pls tell me, how can i install tear 0.3. I have a N810 with default sw insttalled+updates. I tied it from web and said libidn11 is unable to install becouse incompatible application package.

Or this is working only with easy debian chroot ?

thx

Re: Tear 0.3 - Simple WebKit browser, now with Dashboard

http://repository.maemo.org/extras-d....5-1_armel.deb

"apt-get install libidn11" should do too.

bodri 2009-02-18 23:19

Re: Tear 0.3 - Simple WebKit browser, now with Dashboard

I have tried it, but nothing happend. I think i have to add repo to apt-get first. I never used debian before. But extra repo source is added to hildon installer yet.

buhao 2009-02-19 00:38

Re: Tear 0.3 - Simple WebKit browser, now with Dashboard

@bodri, i think i mentioned in this thread that i had problems installing that package as well. One way around it is to enable r&d or red pill mode and then install the package. Others have said this is unnecessary, but I could not get it to install any other way.

the "problem" is that app manger do not bother with fullfilling deps when installing from file. the high and mighty wants us to use extra and similar...

Re: Tear 0.3 - Simple WebKit browser, now with Dashboard

Just wanted to say I tried Tear last night, and it is great! I was surprised just how fast and capable it is.
Aside from not letting me log into the regular facebook page (fine on mobile) and not letting me log into wordpress. It handled everything else I tried last night, and faster than the default browser.

Great job!

Actually, there is a reason, when installing from files, you have no pool information, priority information, etc, so apt wouldn't know what and where should it install from. Also, it would be too easy to blow your system to kingdom come if you try to install an outdated package - this way you only fail to install the package, but not endanger package management.

That being said, on my Diablo N810, I had to manually do apt-get install libidn11 libxslt1.1, then install the libwebkit and tear packages provided in this thread. Did not need to enter red pill mode or any other magic except for the apt-get. I do have the extras repo enabled.

As a fresh tear user, my only beef is the (non)handling of bookmarks, but maybe I just didn't read through the forum carefully enough :)

just note people, to use apt-get one need root access.

to get that, install rootsh, then in terminal on your tablet, enter root.

hmm, while it may sound a bit odd, im getting "testers itch" here ;)

qole 2009-02-19 17:36

Re: Tear 0.3 - Simple WebKit browser, now with Dashboard

tso: What's "Tester's Itch"?

All I could find was this, from Classic Testing Mistakes:

Quote:

A tester's itch to start breaking the program is as strong as a programmer's itch to start writing code - and it has the same effect: design work is skimped, and quality suffers. Paying more attention to running tests than to designing them is a classic mistake. A tester who is not systematic, who does not spend time laying out the possibilities in advance, will overlook special cases.
I doubt that's what you mean :D

heh, mostly i like playing around with (test) various programs, and versions there of...

its some kind of habit i have. when i used windows full time, i would trawl pages like download.com to look for interesting programs to install.

would a "open page in microb" option be useful?

bump for this feature. I think it could be useful, although it may be slow as having two browsers may eat a ton of memory. Alternatively, could one insert an "open in Tear" context menu option in MicroB? Just a thought.

Sure!
But I don't understand how this could influence the length of bookmark description ;)

Un27Pee 2009-02-22 18:11

Re: Tear 0.3 - Simple WebKit browser, now with Dashboard

when i install the bookmarks i had some weird positioning and it will exit unable to launch it so this is what i taught something was wrong with the hildon desktop so apt-get and everything was ok , that is why i taught your case might have something to do with the desktop if all the themes your have are giving the same length if not them someone might be in a good position to help you.

I think it's very easy to fix the length problem with the bookmark navigator. I can do it by myself ...

Code:

def shorten_text(self, variable_holding_text):
    if len(variable_holding_text) > 15:
        new_variable = variable_holding_text[0:15] + " ..."
    return new_variable

Extremely easy! :D

Bundyo, maybe it's worth posting a link to nobodysbusiness's tear Installation Instructions at the top of the first link of this thread?

(Thanks from me, too, for what must be a s***load of work. It still has its limitations -- like the GMail issue -- but it is blazingly fast.)

would be nice if it could be made to look somewhat like the microb menu btw (big arrows and all that).
