Meebo video chat?

I've searched and not found anything, so I apologize if it's been covered...

I'm thinking of getting an n810 for the sole purpose of video chatting with family while I'm out. We have an iMac at home, which seems to work with meebo video chat relatively well. Has anyone managed to get meebo video chat working on the n810? Since it's all flash based I figure it might work.

If not, is there a PDA that can do what I'm looking for, like an Axim with inexpensive SD camera or something? Thanks.

The flash plug-in on the tablets does not work with the built-in webcam.

That's too bad, but I'm not surprised. Thanks.

I've seen some other posts about OS2008 to PC video chatting, but no videos of it running. Is there anything actually usable, or are they all proofs of concept?

As I understand it, working options include the following:
  • N8x0 to N8x0 using the built-in client
  • N8x0 running Gizmo to any other Gizmo client
  • N8x0 using the built-in client to a Mac or Windows computer running X-Lite
  • N8x0 using the built-in client to a Linux computer running one of several clients with Jingle-video support

That software, and the trick it used to get the Flash plug-in working with the webcam, worked only in older versions of the OS. Specifically, it work in Chinook; it doesn't in Diablo.

I've also heard that aMSN works with video chat. I haven't tested it myself.

I've used the built-int chat on the NIT + Empathy on the PC to video chat over google talk.

Empathy is a linux chat client.

Re: Meebo video chat?

Is there an Empathy client for Mac? The OP has an iMac.

Re: Meebo video chat?

Wow. I had no idea the state of things was so positive. I must have missed quite a bit in my search, so I'm sorry about that. Thanks so much.

So, it looks like I can go ahead and get the n810 and put something together on the Mac? There is at least a Gizmo client for OS X. I don't think MSN has a client for the Mac that has video support, but I could be wrong. AIM would, of course, be the best since lots of technophobic family run iChat, but I'll take what I can get.

Those of you who have solved this problem, which method do you think works best? Gizmo? Thanks a lot, all.

Re: Meebo video chat?

I know that iChat supports Jabber. Jabber is the protocol that both the NIT client and Empathy use to video chat using the Gtalk network. I would guess that you could use iChat instead of Empathy to video chat with the NIT over the GTalk network.

But that depends on whether iChat supports video over Jabber. I googled for an answer but came up empty-handed. If I had a mac, I would try it.

If someone with a mac wants to try and video chat with me using iChat and a Gtalk account, PM me and I'll share my IM handle with you.

Re: Meebo video chat?

Matt,
I use jabber to GTalk over iChat. I've never used video on it, either. I can't PM you for some reason, maybe because I just registered on the forums today. If you can PM me your handle I'll try it out. Thanks.

Re: Meebo video chat?

One of my coworkers uses GTalk over iChat routinely, and he happened to bring his mac in today. We just tried video and it didn't work. That is to say, neither piece of software recognized the other as being a video capable client.

He said he would look for a mac client capable of video over jabber. I'll post here when he finds something.

Thanks. I appreciate the help. I think Gizmo should be just fine for us, but if there's something better I'd love to know about it.

Re: Meebo video chat?

The X-Lite client that sjgadsby suggested also works with the Gizmo account, and some have reported more success with video with that client. You may wish to try both clients. The built-in videocall client on the N810 can be configured to work with a Gizmo account too, and it should be able to handle video.

So you have some choice, although you need a Gizmo account in all cases. Actually, any SIP account will do, but Gizmo is as good as any.

Sorry, but are you talking about a desktop or an n810 client?

qole is saying X-Lite could be used on a Mac OS or Windows computer to communicate with Gizmo running on an Internet Tablet. It's an alternative that may work better for some people or in some situations.

qole is also pointing out that one may register for a Gizmo account and use it with an Internet Tablet without using the actual Gizmo client on that tablet. To accomplish this, the SIP settings from a Gizmo account need simply be entered into the tablet's bundled SIP client.

Thanks for clarifying. That makes sense.

here is a helpful post to set up your N8x0 (Gizmo) with an Xlite account on a desktop(mac or PC). You can just install Gizmo and use it on your N8x0 but on your mac you should get yourself a SIP account but then use a Xlite with your new SIP account. Check this post out.

It's more simple than it seems.

Re: Meebo video chat?

I received my n810 today. I've managed a voice call between both gizmo and the built-in client on the n810 and gizmo on the Mac. However, video isn't an option for some reason. I installed xLite on the Mac but it will not register. I continue to get 408 errors (username/password failure) after following the instructions on icbolsh's link. It might have something to do with the authorization username field; I'm not sure how to fill it out.

Has anyone managed to do video chat with Gizmo on the PC end?
Thanks.

[edit] I got Gizmo working on both ends. My problem was that I was trying to video chat with an AIM contact by the same username. Once I chose the Gizmo contact it worked. I'm very excited. There's no sound now, but I'm confident I can work it out. Thanks for all your help, folks. My wife and I appreciate it.
