Browserd memory..

Having troubles with my n800 only lasting a few hours on charge (since upgrading to diablo) so I've been taking a look around...

Top shows :

Mem: 104736K used, 22060K free, 0K shrd, 56K buff, 41492K cached
Load average: 0.04 0.29 0.30

That 'browserd' usage seems really high to me!
(Especially - as I'm not running anything!)

Is that normal ?

Re: Browserd memory..

No, a memory usage value this high when it's not in use is not normal. Probably something in browserd is hanging. You shoud reboot the device.

Re: Browserd memory..

FWIW, top shows precisely those numbers for %MEM for browserd for my N800, as well, with all apps closed and even after reboot.

Re: Browserd memory..

Mine too - this is "clean" - nothing running (i've got a couple of applets - but no browsers etc), and fresh after a battery out reboot..

If I start a web browser (eg. with news.bbc.co.uk) :

Mem: 122920K used, 3876K free, 0K shrd, 2360K buff, 55180K cached
Load average: 1.21 0.41 0.14
PID USER STATUS VSZ PPID %CPU %MEM COMMAND
2928 user SW 126M 2926 35.9102.0 browserd
824 root SW< 11012 342 9.1 8.6 Xomap
2749 user SW< 40336 2678 2.3 31.7 maemo-launcher
3406 root RW 1960 3391 2.1 1.5 top
350 root SW 804 342 0.9 0.6 bme_RX-34
79 root SW< 0 6 0.5 0.0 OMAP McSPI/0
399 root SW< 0 6 0.1 0.0 cx3110x

:-(

I can probably get this stuck onto the internet so someone can ssh in if they want to take a look around.

Re: Browserd memory..

For reference - this n800 was flashed from the latest diablo I could see :

RX-34_DIABLO_5.2008.43-7_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin

from

Re: Browserd memory..

'top' produces bogus results, install 'htop' from maemo sdk (sdk-tools?) repository
http://repository.maemo.org/pool/diablo/free/h/htop/

The column you should be worried about is the "RES" one (resident memory), "VIRT" (reported also by top as VSZ) is not an issue. Also when you substract SHR (shared) from RES you get real nonshared/private memory taken by this process. Shared are dynamic libraries and this memory penalty is paid only once for all processes.

Re: Browserd memory..

so on my device browserd that does nothing has
VIRT 40512 RES 3532 SHR 3328 so the real memory taken by this browserd=3532-3328= 208 KB
browserd instance with page loaded
VIRT 149M RES 44432 SHR 19996 so real private memory is 24MB with additional 20MB shared (microb engine?)

Sorry I'm not fluent in linux would you be so kind as to explain how exactly?

Bundyo 2009-04-05 21:49

Re: Browserd memory..

dpkg -i package.deb

as root.

Re: Browserd memory..

thank you but "errors where encountered..."

Not sure what's wrong. Does anyone have this program working? How did you install it?

Bundyo 2009-04-05 22:01

Re: Browserd memory..

Yup, works like a charm. Installed it the good ole way. ;)
