I don't believe in 1st May too. However I would bet that I will get Pandora sooner than RX-51 whenever that will be.

I'm in first (~3000) Pandora batch (not sure about position, ordered at first day but few hours after order started). I will only get RX-51 from developer program (if there is any) so the bet would be valid only if there is such program and I get accepted (likely but one never knows).

As for prize I don't know. I have a ton of outdated Palm hardware nobody wants (Tungsten E, T2, T3) or I could perhaps bet good 770 (I have two, one has slight WSOD but still usable) or you could choose from list of following tasks for me to do
- implement screen rotation to 770 2.6.16 kernel (for OS2006 and hacker editions), sadly the kernel part only, not sure about xserver side, OS2007 and up is perhaps OK, OS2006 version sources had incomplete dependencies so I failed to rebuild it when I tried
- implement screen rotation and port tearsync to any kernel Mer will use for 770
or you can suggest something similar related to kernel or http://fanoush.wz.cz/maemo/ stuff that needs improvement :-)

Wow! The gauntlet has been thrown down! Does anyone want to take fanoush up on his bet?

I think the bet should go something like, "Which will ship first? The first batch of consumer Pandoras (production run > 500) vs the first batch of Maemo 5 lead devices that don't require an NDA?"

The reason I want to phrase it that way is that it isn't entirely clear if developers will get their Nokia devices before the general public this time. I think there will be a small number of Nokia devices released to selected developers (probably developers of Mer and the selected Fremantle Stars) very soon, probably by the time the Beta SDK is released. But those developers will be gagged by an NDA, I think.

So the bet is for the first non-NDA batch of Maemo 5 devices. I think they will be at least the same quantity as the first batch of Pandoras. And as for the Pandoras, they have to be from a production run, not hand built developer prototypes.

If the devices start arriving in peoples' hands within two weeks of each other, I say we declare a tie.

As for the prize... Is a "slight WSOD [White Screen Of Death]" something like "a little bit pregnant"?

(by the way, I have no extra knowledge -- they don't tell me nothin')

Yeah, because the Pandora hand built developer prototypes area already out there.. for a given definition of "prototype": They've got the board (the electronics, in MK1 and MK2 versions), the LCD, sometimes the keyboard, and they've been developing the operating system variant and ported games/emulators etc. for months already.

If the RX-51 developer device program turns out as the N810 instance did, the above stipulation puts the Pandora in a position of considerable advantage. qole's proposal seems more equitable.


(At the same time, in the very likely case that Nokia does run a developer device discount program for the Maemo 5 lead device, I hope it benefits from lessons learned from the problems of the last one.)

I really did not think hard about possible tasks, it is up to you. It only makes sense if I am able to do it though. Another ideas are
- make N8x0 screen rotation working with xv overlay properly (video playback while rotated)
- backport/implement xv overlay (=more framebuffer planes) to 770 kernel
- write cal-tool command replacement that could safely write r&d mode, serial console and watchdog flags and any other value stored in CAL area (/dev/mtd1) directly from tablet via messages sent to dsme

I'd like to keep the personal aspect here. Which one will land on my table first. I really don't want to delay any of them so it is really up to openpandora or nokia guys including possible N810-like developer program delay fiasco sjgadsby mentioned, OTOH they could learn from mistakes and actually ship devices from developer program sooner so it is double-edged sword for me. Early devices shipped sooner than 'normal' developer program do not count (but I don't think it is probable that I'll be getting one anyway).
Hmm, if any of them gets lost in mail or something then we could use date of other developer getting tablet in Germany or CZ or any person getting production pandora from Evildragon's shop http://gp2x.de/

the problem with the "personal aspect" here is that you would have to immediately apply for any developer discount program and immediately order your device upon receiving your approval. It is in your best interest to take your time at both of these stages to give the Pandora a better chance. By keeping the personal aspect out of it, then nobody can accuse you of anything.

No developer program so far was dependent on time of application. As for shipping - yes I could delay it a bit but it is really not in my best interest at all. We could use any developer from Germany that manages to gets his/her device. It is up to the person who picks up the gauntlet to decide. However the problem with omitting "personal aspect" here is that we will completely omit the "fun aspect" here too. I really don't feel like I've lost the bet if e.g. people in US start to get their devices since Nokia wisely decides to prefer US market and lets Europeans wait. Same issue in case of some other fiasco with various European Nokia shops like not accepting discount codes, being permanently out of stock, messing up the price and demanding device return because of that or any other Nokia c*ckup we might not even imagine now :-) Any such thing is fair to Pandora team since they are really David and Nokia the Goliath.
No it is not. I want both devices ASAP. And BTW the bet is win-win situation for me anyway but I think you already guessed it ;-) Why should I cheat? In both cases I will get days of hacking fun. In case I lose I will do something I want to do anyway but won't find the time unless really forced :-) In case I win I'll get priceless cool hardware I would never buy since I don't need it at all :-)

Or anyone else :-) There are more 'prizes' so even more people can take it. From the poll result it looks like there should be enough people :-) Well, unless prizes are not attractive enough ;-)
