first days with N800

if you are a brand new newbie like me, and know some of linux like me, I think you can follow:

0. come here: http://wiki.maemo.org/Category:Users
1. flash N800
do 0, and choose updating tablet firmware and follow the instructions. no sweat here.
2. become root
do 0, click on root access. it is a piece of cake.
3. partition an SD card
do 0, and click on partition a flash card, follow the instructions, but if you see this message which confused me a lot when you try to mount the partitions, use lsmod to check if what you want to install are already active:

insmod: cannot insert '/mnt/initfs/lib/modules/2.6.21-omap1/mbcache.ko': File exists (-1):File Exists.

4. clone OS
go to: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ighlight=clone, start from step 8, or 6, if you have not partitioned SD yet.

5. USB control
when I tried to install it from Maemo, it shows 'incompatible package'. so
Do 0, click USB host mode, and use echo command to do it

to be continued....

some thing I did not figure out:

WIFI: browsing is slow (even not possible) ONLY when I visit maemo.org. I noticed that there is no www before maemo.org. is it the reason?
will change internet browser.

the problem is same as this: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=15262
connecting forever.

I have tried this with different APs connected to different Internet connections (DSL modems) on different continents. Irritatingly enough, one of the sites I have trouble connecting to is maemo.org -- I can get to the front page (maemo.org) but not the download pages (maemo.org/download/os2008, for example). If I try to connect through my laptop, which goes through the same AP, I have no problem.

I feel like I read something about this once, but couldn't track it down in the forums if I did (unlike the "power on" problem, which I also have, but we'll save that for another time).

Any help greatly appreciated. I've never hated a device I love so much.

#1. should have solved most connectivity problems. Try disabling flash and choose "minamalist" or "classic" from the drop down menu found in the lower left corner of a page when viewing this site...

Good luck :)

not quite understand. flash should be shockwave flash? I saw it in components, i think i can disable it. I will check if there is a drop down menu in the lower left corner.

On the Private Message page that you will be viewing the message I am about to send you, if you scroll down to the bottom and look to the left you will see the drop down menu I spoke of. Choose the "Classic" or "Minimalistic" style and all ITT pages will be rendered with less style elements and as a result, will usually load faster.

To disable Shockwave flash; load the browser, press the menu key, touch "view", touch " Show toolbar", touch (whatever screen view you are in).
When the toolbar loads, touch the the magnifying glass in the lower right, touch "components", touch "shockwave Flash to disable (or enable) it.

tried USB hub. it reports "do not support USB hub" error and "do not support Memory Stick" error, but still I can use it. will try more.

USB Hub works fine with N800

SOLVED THE MYSTERY.
i borrowed a memory card reader and i can copy files, even large ones (>300M), from the card in the card reader to HD.
I am pretty sure USB HUB works fine with N800. the problem was caused by my memory stick. i think it consumes too much of juice, and it happened my hub power supply is not enough to keep it on when reading data continuously from it, so it was turned off.

I connect a memory stick and a Hard drive to the usb Hub and copy files from memory stick to HD. it works if the files are small, but the file manager freezes and memory stick LED is turned off when the files are big (300M something). In the Terminal, I mounted both of them and used CP to copy files and had same problem: the Terminal itself freezes. My power supply can provide enough juice.
Just wonder if anyone tried this before?
thanks.

default bootmenu issue

following steps to clone OS to card, but the default boot menu item is pointed to external card, not internal card. check /mnt/initfs/bootmenu.sh and find the itemid for internal card is 'immc2', so use command:
# chroot /mnt/initfs cal-tool --set-root-device ask:immc2
not # chroot /mnt/initfs cal-tool --set-root-device ask:mmc2
reboot and the problem is gone

Jayden ,

Try the Tear browser by Bundyo !

I've been using it for some days, it is much faster than the standard browser,
no more waiting-for-maemo.

Nokia says (covered before in ITT) that 100 mA is max. current N810 can supply through USB.

I'm a newbie too, but also to Linux, so I noted your info and references.
Just what I need to begin to understand what really went on as I cloned etc.

Thanks ! , will read on.

power consumption problem

after some applications are installed, the power consumption is abnormally big. hard-reboot and the problem is gone. I think it is necessary to do hard-reboot sometime.

apt-get problem

where the device to look for applications when you use apt-get to do installation? not the whole internet but the categories set in application managers. (there is other way to tell the locations, but this is the simplest way). but there still are applications are invisible, like nano, htop, that is why you have to set N800 to red pill mode.

jayden 2009-04-16 14:45

load applet

it is very nice. I do not feel the battery is consumed fast after it is installed.
i installed: nano, htop, wget. all of them are commands; personal menu, epdfview, stardict, tear, canola, fmradio, quiver image view, gpe suit, leafpad, xournal, sudoku.
epdfview is good just because it has text selection ability, which i need to use with stardict for translate the words i do not know.

I have a camera with which I can take video in .mov format. I cannot install Nokia video converter because the link to the server cannot establish, i do not know why. I use this instead. but it cannot convert the .mov files generated by my camera. I googled and found this. it is free open ware. the trick is to change audio format. after convert .mov files to .avi, i use converter to ....
