mcedit - Change MCE settings easily!

As I hinted at here, I've been working on a python application to change the settings in mce.ini. Along with the LED patterns, there's some interesting settings in there, that aren't normally accessible. Well, I now have something to show:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3621/...7ef86478_o.png

All options are changeable, however, the LED strings are currently difficult to set. You have to know how to create the LED pattern string yourself at the moment. In the next version, there will be a little GUI to assist in this setting.

BE CAREFUL! Changing certain settings COULD have negative effects. I haven't played around with everything, just don't mess with things that you don't understand. If you need a little help on what a setting does, simply click the lifesaver icon, then click the label for the setting you're unsure of. This will popup a little help blurb, as shown below:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3465/...7432fe81_o.png

However, if you do screw up, I've built in a slight safeguard: uninstall the application and mce will be put back to normal. In the next version, I also plan on having a button to do this without having to uninstall. I'll also try to add a couple more safeguards.

Anyway, enough talking. If you want to try out mcedit, it's in extras-devel (linked to deb, so you don't need to enable extras-devel). It only depends on python, so installing it from a local file shouldn't be a problem.

Have fun playing around! Let me know if you run into any problems, or if you know of any settings/setting combinations that could have disastrous effects (I'm already aware that you can set all the power key presses to "disabled", which would make it difficult to turn off the tablet). Oh... and one more thing...

DISCLAIMER: I take no responsibility for any destruction you cause when using this application. While nothing should go wrong, it's not my fault if it does. Good luck ;)

Changelog:
0.0.7-1:
  • Now only need to single-click on a section to load it
  • Fixed combo box items, they will now actually load the saved value
  • Added interface to modify n800 LED items
  • Prepared code for adding editor for n810 LED items, but nothing to show for it... yet...
  • Button to restore mce.ini to pre-mcedit state.
Screenshot of n800 LED editing interface:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3572/...1b295e9d_o.png
I tried to make the interface as easy to understand as possible, but the screen setting even confused me a bit. Can anyone clear this up?

Does it load the current contents of the mce.ini file? Looks like it is loading the defaults. I have edited mine already, it would be nice if I could see my current edits.

Re: mcedit - Change MCE settings easily!

It is loading the current contents of mce.ini.

If this works, you'll have answered one of my itablet prayers, but allow me to reserve my praise for just a bit longer.

Re: mcedit - Change MCE settings easily!

I have power button double press enabled as softpoweroff, but when I load mce editor, it shows as disabled???

TrueJournals 2009-03-25 21:16

Re: mcedit - Change MCE settings easily!

Woops! You're right, that's a mistake in my coding. All of the combo boxes were displaying the default value, instead of whatever value you had set. I've just uploaded a new version (0.0.7-1) to extras-devel which fixes this, and makes the following changes:
  • Now you only need to single click on a section in order to load it
  • Editor for n800 LED patterns! Would like feedback on the interface for this
I think that's all I changed... The package should be in extras-devel in about 5-10 minutes. Darn autobuilder being slow!

Karel Jansens: Hope it works for you :D

Re: mcedit - Change MCE settings easily!

OK, cool it is now showing the correct options selected.

Note: SoftPowerOff - Power On Policy should be offline or restore, not forceoffline, softoffline, retain.

I don't get any options for mono led (using n800).

Looking good so far though.

im having trouble getting it to save changes...

Re: mcedit - Change MCE settings easily!

lennyslender: Woops! You're right! Already fixed for next version. I'll try to release a small version later tonight/tomorrow. Also, when you click the "Edit Mono LED Pattern" button... nothing happens? Can you run it from the command line (/usr/bin/mcedit.py) and post any output you get?

tso: Can you be more specific? When you click the "save" icon, and get the dialog box prompting "Are you sure?" and click yes, is there any pause, or does the dialog just close? Can you run it from the command line (/usr/bin/mcedit.py) and post any output you get?

Mind poking Nokia about some improvements to MCE?

Hmmm you shouldn't have to install sudser in order to use this. I'll try poking around with things to see if I can fix this, thanks for letting me know!

[edit]Ah, found the problem. Another mistake on my part. Fixed for the next version.

Better than WONTFIX.

TrueJournals, actually, I was thinking more about getting gconf settings so we wouldn't have to reboot to get MCE to reload its settings. ;)

Re: mcedit - Change MCE settings easily!

Well, I can't say it came as a surprise, but nevertheless a microscopic spore of hope was once again squashed. I installed mcedit and tried to set the doublepress event of the power button to softpoweroff, but for some reason it is always reset to "no action". Rebooting makes no difference, I cannot get my softpoweroff back.

And I really didn't need much else than that...

Re: mcedit - Change MCE settings easily!

There's a bug in the current version of the applicaiton, so the updated setting on combo boxes won't show up, but it should write the information fine. Try doing a double-press on the power button and see if it goes to soft offline.

That was one of the first things I tried (it would be kinda stupid to not check this out before posting), and the double press does nothing.

I currently have no good editor installed on my N800, so I cannot directly confirm whether mce.ini was changed, but the behaviour of the press hasn't changed.

Edit: I'm using the latest version (0.0.7-1), installed from extras-devel. Nothing weird has been done with my tablet, other than install the latest version of Diablo on it (I used to tamper with mce.ini a lot, but have not touched it in this installation. I don't even have an editor installed that is capable of opening system files).

Ah, yes... now I remember... 0.0.7-1 still has a bug with writing the file and restarting mce. I'll put a new version up in about a minute that will fix this, along with the combo box problem...

[edit] OK, new version can be found attached to this post temporarily... should be in extras-devel in a bit. 0.0.8-1 -- Only change is fixing the sudoers file.

I installed the attached update and now mcedit won't start at all anymore.

But like I said, I'm not that disappointed, as I wasn't really expecting much...

I don't know vi. Then again, I don't know Assembler either. The gripping hand: Any editor is useless if the program doesn't start.

Hmmm... as much as you may not be disappointed... I'd like to figure out what's going wrong :P Can you run /usr/bin/mcedit.py from the command line and post the output?

disq: Oops! Wasn't aware of that. Was going to call it mceedit, but that looked weird... I'll probably just keep the name now, though :\

-sh: /usr/bin/mcedit.py: not found

Which is rather funny, as an ls of /usr/bin does show mcedit.py present. Maybe you didn't set the executable bit?

Re: mcedit - Change MCE settings easily!

little offtopic but here we go

softpoweroff key work well when i double-click the power button fastly...

Mode offline and screen shot off...its fast!

but no clue for now for how to come back in normal mode instead come back in offline mode when i powered on again the tablet...

and of course...is could be better if we can set a double fast click again instead a long power push for ''wake up'' the tiger 'blet...

cheers

TrueJournals 2009-04-02 12:22

Re: mcedit - Change MCE settings easily!

If I remember how soft poweroff works correctly... It's a long power button press to come back from "offline mode", but the touchscreen and keys will still be locked when you do this.

LABAUDIO 2009-04-02 15:54

Re: mcedit - Change MCE settings easily!

i can confirm it'a long power button...

the tablet screen and key delocked...

but definetely come back in ''offline'' mode like that...

any clue to come back in ''normal''mode whit some tweaking ho others ways?

Sorry about the delay... I just put 0.0.8-2 in the extras autobuilder queue. This version should fix problems with not being able to launch mcedit. Again, for the impatient ones, I've attached an already-built deb to this post.

I also experimented with adding an "update description", but it didn't show up for me... Let me know if it shows up for you.

It only shows in the "Check for updates" view, in place of where the description would be, when updating from a repository.

This version starts but -- again! -- refuses to write the changes to mce.ini. It should be self-explanatory that I haven't seen any evidence of an "update description", whatever it may be.

I'm beginning to wonder how much time I'm supposed to spend on software that doesn't actually do anything...

EDIT: Does anyone know whether mcedit plays nice -- or not -- with Advanced Backlight, which I do have installed (and, incidentally, am not prepared to uninstall, as it is a very useful program)?
