Probably not useful for tablets directly... but

It would be kinda cool if we could get this working with internet tablets. Though it would be to unwiedly to carry around and
not portable.

i could have sworn that someone had a huawei dongle working with the tablet.

the big problem basically is the amout of power draw. iirc, the tablets cant handle it so one will need a powered hub as a go-between...

Meh. I'm waiting on the MiFi portable router. The only thing I'm worried about is whether it'll work overseas. Of course, if someone figures out how to hack it and unlock the device, that might be possible. :)

A second-hand 3G phone with BT and even Wifi costs less, has its own battery, and has a couple of other uses besides being a modem/router (like phone calls and a calendar that syncs :-).

Yep, the problem is the current draw. Won't work with the 770/N800/N810. They'll work with the Pandora (because it can provide 500mA), and who knows, possibly with the rx51 as well? If it's possible where you live then fpp's suggestion above is really the best option anyway..

Yeah, I've been looking for a good one (hopefully running Android) after my current contract is up.

Ya know, Ta-t3 just reminded me of something. Someone around here referred me over to a device called a "Cradlepoint" that essentially takes a 3g dongle and acts as the host, allowing you to plug the dongle in and convert from 3g to wifi.

Here's a thread over at the EVDO forums where I asked some questions about them. That should get you started. However, given what I've read, it's really not a very cost effective solution. If you want to see what I'm talking about, go here and scroll a little over a third of the way down to where it says " Product and Contract Options: " (you'll need to click on "show details" to reveal the "fine print" hidden inside) and read about how epically screwed you get using one of these devices.

I have an Asus-something wi-fi router with USB2 socets. It can provide full 500mA for my 3G dongle and it can run Linux wrt instead of the software it came with. With that setup I have a 3G-to-wifi combo (it's not a portable solution, but there's no wired internet at the place to start with). I don't use it anymore though, I gave up a long time ago due to the low quality 3G networking. I may try again when the HSDPA (aka turbo-3G) coverage has been improved in the area.
