Has anyone tried yet, if it is possible, to make a statusbar notifier for an SMS on your google voice account, like the statusbar notifier thats availible for gmail?

IMO, Google really should roll sms and chat into a single UI.

There was SMS for Gtalk, but people were starting to abuse it (basically people were making money off of Google's free service by selling it to people). Google didn't like that and stopped the service.

I know that laughing man, but if you use their web interface you can send/receive sms till your fingers fall off, all I want is a way to know someone has sent me an sms so i dont have to have the browser open all the time.

Yeah I know what you mean. I want something similar myself. Right now I just have a tab set to auto-refresh in Firefox on my laptop. A notification on the tablet would be wonderful.

has there been any progress or other application that will do this. i would not only love to know when i get the sms but to also be able to send one from the same interface. i'm using email on my tablet to accomplish this but sms app for google voice would be much easier for everyone involved in my smsing ;)

That not that I know of. I haven't programmed in ages so I wouldn't be able to do one myself. But I have an idea, when you get a new SMS from the Google Voice page it adds a # to your inbox. So if you had a screenscrapper somehow check if there's any besides the default "Inbox" and then notify you.

Hi guys, there is an open source Google Voice Notifier at http://code.google.com/p/google-voice-notifier/ It is pretty basic, but it works well.

Maybe I'm missing something, but are you sure this is the right place to post this? To me, it looks like thread spam, especially with your post count at 1. This is a community of embedded Linux users so a Java system tray app is irrelevant. Plus we already had a SMS notifier written for Maemo (gv_notifier) which later got integrated into Dialcentral, a PyGTK GoogleVoice app with special Maemo features like notification.

It doesnt really work for SMS.

You have to keep refreshing it to update, and it doesn't show incoming SMS messages...... so..... :(
