Anyway, I'd hate to give the impression that I'm trashing the developer. Given how grateful I've been for tear and to Bundyo, I might come of as a someone who would still a kidney for a friend, only to reveal myself as someone who would still my friend's kidney, if he weren't my friend. That's no friend at all. I'm happy there is another developer of a browser on the scene. I just wish they'd work harder to give us accurate expectations. Bundyo has been amazingly frank in that regard, quite in contrast to Digia's claims. |
Re: Digia @web Browser
Actually digia@web was announced 21.10.2008 http://www.digia.com/C2256FEF0043E9C...cument&lang=en
So this is an early example of cross platform qt4.5 development for mobile devices (maemo and symbian). I hope that this is the future. |
Re: Digia @web Browser
Dunno about the browser, but @scene is the ****!
|
Re: Digia @web Browser
where can I install @scene from? I dont see it in the application manager.

Browser works well for me. Other than some bad key bindings, and memory usage being a tad high, it works well. No crashes either.

Re: Digia @web Browser
After the fix it hasn't crashed even once.
Now that I can actually use it, it's not bad at all. It seems pretty slow and requires a lot of memory. Lack of any kind of progress bar makes it feel even more sluggish. Pressing menu key twice gives you access to settings |
Re: Digia @web Browser
A nice browser that needs some perfomance optimizations realy good to have multiple choices, a new update today makes it crach proof, where can we report encounted bug? is any of thier reps on this forum to report to them? can't believe having Tear,Microb,Fennec,Midori,@web all installed on my N810 device.

They definitely did alot better on @scene, beats the hell out of mytube in my opinion.

Re: Digia @web Browser
I actually dont think it's too bad once the timeouts were fixed. Thanks mikkov. Quirky little browser and once some further optimizations and tweaks from suggestions have been fixed who knows. Just hope @web will listen to the suggestions/criticisms and update accordingly.
All in all though 6/10 so far. Just my 2 cents |

Seems to be 2 @scenes... atscene in extras and digiaatscene in extras-dev. I installed atscene and agree that it seems like a really nice application.

Re: Digia @web Browser
Any idea what the difference is? The version numbers are the same....Im wondering which will show in updates.

Re: Digia @web Browser
Hi all,
Now we have stabile @Web 2.0.1 available in extras-devel We had a problem in building 2.0.0 and also made a mistake intially putting it to extras. Qt 4.5 is not yet ready for extras, so we need to have this in extras-devel. We are happy to receive all feedback to support.product@digia.com (and naturally we also try to follow the discussion in the forums) Yours, Tuukka Turunen Digia Plc |
Re: Digia @web Browser
ttt, what is the difference between the two atscenes?
|
Re: Digia @web Browser
We made a mistake in naming the package. Correct name is digiaatscne. We will keep using this in the future.
Hopefully soon the atscene will be removed from repository. Again, sorry for that. The SW itself is great (at least I like it :) - we just used wrong type of build system initially and thus there were some problems in getting it into maemo.org repository. Yours, Tuukka Turunen Digia Plc |
Re: Digia @web Browser
The atscene is awesome, I too quickly judged @web and the update did improve some things but its still painfully slow on alot of sites...IMDB.com being one of them, wont load in completely and also maemo.org takes forever to load.

Re: Digia @web Browser
One big issue I have noticed is that I cannot access internettablettalk front page because of some issue with the adverts.
"Connection refused when connecting to http: //amazon.com/e/cm[/url] ect..........." Just get grey screen of death. Can someone else verify and I will report it. Im using latest update of Digia@web. |
Re: Digia @web Browser
@scene is one of the best youtube viewers I have used on any mobile platform, great stuff. Tryed out @web which has a pretty good UI but is prone to error out as other users have noted.
Is @scene going to be available for Symbian? The official youtube client for Symbian is not very powerful. |
Re: Digia @web Browser
Can't wait to try @scene when I get home! Can you bookmark your location in the video and start it up from were you left off? Maybe someone should start a @scene thread so info on it is easier to find.

Re: Digia @web Browser
I installed the @web from the Applications Dispatcher when I saw it there. Good impressions but the one bug (or feature?) - I cannot type in a single letter in the address bar. The screen keyboard lives its own life. Tapping keys does not send characters to the field neither in @web, nor in @scene. Is there anybody who experienced that? What's to be done?

Re: Digia @web Browser
Samaritan, as far I as I know this was a bug in the Qt 4.5 libraries that was quickly fixed. You must have been unfortunate enough to install the libraries while the bug existed.
You can either update your system via the terminal ("rootsh apt-get update && rootsh apt-get upgrade") if you have enough free memory to store and unpack the files, or via the Application Manager in "Red Pill" mode. |
Re: Digia @web Browser
Hi all,
I just uploaded Digia @Web 2.0.2 to extras-devel. There is one fix to a bug we had in addressbar not being visible when page is loading. The progress indicator is in to stop/reload -button on addressbar so with this version you can see that something is still being loaded. Also it would be good (as fiferboy said) to update to the new Qt libraries. There still are some minor issues in Qt 4.5 on Maemo, but getting better all the time. Yours, Tuukka Turunen Digia Plc |
Re: Digia @web Browser
fiferboy, thank you. I took the lamer's road: deinstallation and reinstallation anew. The result was positive. Anyhow there's another reinstallation pending - look one post up :)

as with post #62 above still having same problem loading itt front page. could someone else please check.

Re: Digia @web Browser
After all updates I found out that the keyboad annoyingly pops up any moment the stylus or finger touches the screen. The only safe zone is dlimited by the blue angle in the bottom right-hand corner. Maybe there is a reason to limit the keyboard activation only when you tap on the input windows and bars?
|
Re: Digia @web Browser
I have no trouble loading the ITT front page; it does take a while, though. I only have problems on pages like: zerodaydeals.com (which works fine on microB) and uh.edu/webct (which also works fine on microB, but it isn't "testable" since you need login details). I love the browser, though (and the speed of the updates). It's the first truly "mobile" browser I have found for the n810. The rest of the browsers have too small fonts and the zoom is (for me) rather non-intuitive. The "flipping" orientation feature is also quite useful. It's too bad it's closed-source, though. I'd love to be able to change the useragent string and spoof the iPhone/iPod touch so I could use the gmail site built for them.
Biggest Problems/Annoyances: - The browser seems slow (Pages only seem to appear when they are fully loaded, and that can take a while for big pages). Maybe a progress bar would be helpful? Also, sites like gmail are genuinely slower than on microB or any other browser. - The browser (after installing the newest update) crashes every once in a while (maybe I'm overtaxing it??? I do have my swap file turned on with the maximum amount of memory available and the only other things I run at the same time are the home applets -- currently the RSS reader, Forcea Weather, HomeDiskFree, Personal Launcher, and mgCal). Note that I stripped down my system to install Qt 4.5 and Digia @web, so I do not have any other browsers installed (such as tear, midori, etc.), so perhaps that is why it performs (decently) well for me? I'm just anxiously waiting for Qt and this to get better!!! Completely random note for the developers: In reference to the @scene youtube browser -- it is an amazing experience for the tablets. Would it be possible to create a Hulu version? That would be amazing! |
Re: Digia @web Browser
Hi all,
When the latest Qt 4.5 libraries are in place we do not see the VKB problem. If you have already installed some @Web version update to 2.0.2 does not force Qt library update. Here is instructions howto upgrade Qt libraries: 1. Make sure you have extras catalogue enabled 2. Install rootsh 3. Open xterm 4. Give following commands at xterm: - sudo gainroot - apt-get update - apt-get upgrade - agree to both of the following request (Y) Now all Qt libraries have been upgraded to the newest one. When we make next release we will make also force to update the stabile Qt libraries. Now also in extras. Biggest reasons for Qt WebKit performance are memory and lack of some mobile optimizations. One thing you can do that helps is to enable virtual memory. Then some libraries that are not used when surfing can be swapped there and free some RAM for WebKit use. can you give a little explanation to why it is dangerous and thanks for the recommendation to use a safer way. |
Re: Digia @web Browser
apt-get upgrade upgrades everything, not only the user-visible packages. It may not be a big problem when only maemo-extras is activated, but if you use more repositories, you might get e.g. library version conflicts easily. YMMV

Re: Digia @web Browser
Hi there,
I just uploaded new vesion (2.0.3) of Digia @Web to extras-devel. It should be visible shortly. We have added some functionality: - Support for multiple windows - Kinetic scrolling in Bookmarks - Minor icon and dialog changes - Minor other fixes We would like to hear your thoughts about the multiple windows functionality. We know that it is a bit slow now when many pages are open in different windows. There are some memory optimizations in Qt that come hopefully in the next release. And we also will work to optimize a bit on the performance. Yours, Tuukka Turunen Digia Plc |
Re: Digia @web Browser
I like it! If only the tablets had enough memory to keep the pages open, though...
I'm typically running: Desktop Widgets: - Personal Launcher - mgCal - HomeDisk Free Applets in the status bar: - Large Statusbar Clock - Advanced Backlight Control - Advanced Power - "Graph Plugin" (forgot the name) - Webmail Notifier If I open even 2 pages in digia@web, my tablet starts to act wierdly (as described below): Whenever a program consumes too much memory (I'm assuming this--I only see this behavior when I open mutilple instances of microB or mutiple pages in digia@web), everything on the desktop disappears and the applets (advanced power, etc.) disappear & revert to the original applets. As can be imagined, this is pretty annoying. I don't know if there is any other way to fix it, but I just end up rebooting my tablet every time it happens. Hopefully the new version of Qt will fix the memory consumption. (back to digia@web): All in all, though the browser scrolling seems a little snappier (maybe it's my imagination?). Feature Requests: - When I click the "mutiple pages" button next to the address bar, I would only like to see all the pages I have open -- not automatically create a new page and switch me to it. Maybe a + (plus) sign can be added at the end of the "switching" panel, so I can just click that if I want a new page? - Faster opening of the browser (if possible -- or at least a simulation that it is opening faster -- maybe some trick like the iPhone/new version of Safari, where it opens up a screenshot while the actual application loads in the background). - Option to have the removal of the "zoom-in" effect of the icons. (I like it, but it seems kind of jerky on my n810). I believe it would look nicer if the icons just appeared/disappeared instantly. - Perhaps the inclusion of dedicated arrows in the bottom right/left (could be changed through preferences) corner that allow me to slowly scroll a web page. (sometimes while reading an article or something online, dragging the page can be a little distracting). - Removal of the "capital-first-letter" feature. [The browser address bar seems to capitalize the first letter I put into it (only half of the time, though???). I find this kind of annoying since I typically input webpages in all lowercase. Even though (I'm assuming) it shouldn't really matter, I find myself erasing what I've typed so I can fix the first letter and make it lowercase]. Even if these features can't be implemented, digia@web is still pretty cool! :) |

An application, even a large one, shouldn't ever cause hildon-desktop to crash, so far as I know. However, if you are running an applet with a memory leak, and it is prevented from gobbling up more RAM by a large application that's actually using memory, then a crash may occur. |
Re: Digia @web Browser
Greetings Tuukka,
Are there plans to add CSS support? This app is done very well. I hope to see it running on the next Maemo release. :) |
