to flash or not to flash

I hit the lock device button by mistake. Of course, I can't remember the code, don't remember ever actually setting it and have tried all the default ones I read about here.
In searching here I find contradictory reports about if a re-flash gets around the problem. Some people say you still need the code, others say the code is still there but the function is turned off and they have a successful re-flash.
I would not mind re-flashing. Everything is stored or backed up elsewhere. But I don't want to end up even worse off if I am to be asked for the code when I try to re-flash.
I have an n800 which has the latest OS and updates up to last week. Something has to be changed with the way the device lock works. It's too easy to get into trouble if you have fat fingers, a fat head, or both.
Thanks, I hope.

I haven't needed it, but I think you can use this. See the instructions in the post that follows qwerty12's post.

Yes, I have seen that. Don't you need access to the tablet before you can do this?

Ha! (sorry, i know this is no laughing matter), but of course you are right! Sorry for being dense.

I deserve it. I wonder what is the worst thing that could happen if I try to re-flash but get blocked by a request for the code?

I'm pretty sure you don't get asked for the code. If you flash, you'll be back to square 1 with no code or the default code. However, you will not want to re-install your settings from your back-up, because that will put in the old, forgotten code. You can still re-install your apps and stuff.

Here's someone claiming that a reflash will still produce the request for a lock code.

If you have root, and SSH installed, you may be able to login to a command shell via xterm (or putty on windows), which would let you run the commands to get the code.

If not then you probably need to reflash. If you have been using your tablet hard, and have added and removed lots of apps, and have most if not all your important info on card, then you should be OK.

Don't forget that when you restore from backup these days, you can be selective about what you restore, try a full restore skipping the settings.

Good. Thanks. When I get some time I will try that at the end of the day. I will check back here first though. Most of the threads either state or assume that no code will be required.

Yes. And there are others. That scares me a bit.

There is no reason to backup the device lock password.. so it would be crazy if you find it in there.

Anyway, the original way that Qwerty has given was a little bit more complicated.

Re: to flash or not to flash

Thanks for all the help. I'm in good shape. The reflash did not require me to enter the lock code. I have a feeling that the code requirement during reflash that some people have referred to may be the wlan code which is required to gain access to the Nokia restricted downloads site.

I have to admit I let my machine boot windows so that I could use the wizard provided by Nokia for reflashing which is more refined than their Linux facility. I guessed that this would give me more chance of not requiring the lock code.

I did not see the link provided by Saturn before doing this, which looks promising. I will be careful about using the backup (which I bypassed in the Wizard) from the advice given by GeraldKo and gazza_d.

Thank you all.

If you enable the device lock from the control panel, you will be asked for a password even after a reflash.

In my opinion, it is a bug that it doesn't ask for the same if it was locked from the menu. I'm sure you are happy for this bug :)
