just got my n810, need some help [with e-mail application]!

hey guys just got my n810 int he mail today after a few hours of playing around i tried to set up the default mail client for my gmail account but it would'nt work. Then i came across claws mail but when i tried to installed it said i was missing a lot of library files. I have read that the default mail client gives you notifications each time you get a mail so if someone can give me instructions on how to set it up for gmail that would be nice. If not then could someone give me the directions to install claws mail?

any help would be great!

Re: just got my n810, need some help!

I have a Gmail account that I access from the web using the browser by going to the mail.google.com site and selecting "mobile".
For notifications I use Mnotify found in one of the repositories.

I have tried both the default mail client and Claws in the past. IMHO, if you just have a Gmail account you wish to access, they are not worth the effort and still leave something to be desired once set-up.

In any event here are the instructions that I saved when I tried it last:

Quote:

The following instructions show you how to set up an Gmail account in the e-mail client:

With Gmail you must first log in to http://www.gmail.com to enable POP download in the settings.

Do the following:
Log in to Gmail by using your account. In the Gmail main view, select Settings > Forwarding and POP > Enable POP for all mail or Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on > Save changes.

In the Home view, tap the Contacts icon and select View inbox.
If you are creating your first mailbox, the setup wizard opens and asks if you want to define an e-mail account. Select OK.

(If you want to create another mailbox, go to E-mail - Inbox > Accounts > New account... and continue with the next step).

Select Next to start the account setup.

In the Account setup 1/4, define the following settings:

Account name: Your user name, including the domain name (for example, dina.hutton@gmail.com )

Account type: POP3

Tap Next.

In the Account setup 2/4, define the following settings:

Name: Your user name (as you want it to be shown in the sender field, for example, "Dina Hutton")

User name: Your user name (for example, dina.hutton@gmail.com)

Password: Your password (for example, a1b2c3)

E-mail address: Your e-mail address (for example, dina.hutton@gmail.com)

Tap Next.

In the Account setup 3/4, define the following settings:

Incoming server (POP3): pop.gmail.com

Outgoing server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com

Leave Use connection-specific SMTP servers unchecked.

Tap Next.

In the Account setup 4/4, tap Advanced for further settings.

In the Incoming view, you must define the following settings:

Security: SSL (POP3S)

Incoming e-mail port: 995

In the Outgoing view, you must define following settings:

SMTP authentication: Login

User name: Your user name (for example, dina.hutton@gmail.com)

Password: your password (for example, a1b2c3)

Security: SSL

Outgoing e-mail port: 465 or 587

Tap OK to save the settings.

Tap Finish. Your mailbox has now been created.
It has been a while and things may have changed. :)

Hmm Claws should install as long as you have the extras repo active. Don't forget to enable POP3 at gmail (in settings).

I think you would enjoy using the IMAP interface instead of POP3. See http://mail.google.com/support/bin/a...n&answer=78799 for setup instructions. I use this with the built in client and i can read from the tablet or from the web page. You'll have to browse your inbox at least once manually before automatic notifications will work because of a certificate that needs to be downloaded.

Just remember to switch the setting to IMAP (otherwise it won't work). Sadly I've fell in that trap before. :P

As to Tear :
Read the thread "How to install Tear" in the Applications forum.

This is how I did it :
Install rootsh with the application manager.
EDIT : Try to download and install Tear from garage.maemo.org (maemo has a link).
The appl. man. will give a message of missing packag(es),
click for the detailed description and write down what is missing.
If you do not find it with the appl. man., then :
Quit the appl.man.
Start Xterm.
Write "sudo gainroot" (if rootsh is installed this gives you root privilegies).
Write "apt-get update".
Write "apt-get install xxx" where xxx is a missing package, repeat . .
If you get an error that something is missing, install that first.

And don't forget Tear-bookmarks by Bongo.
Post #334 in the Tear thread tells how to edit them.

You need to apply updates before installing Claws Mail.

Add qole's repo.
Install Tear.
You can install tear bookmarks from extras, bongo's manager is included in the latest release I think.

Re: just got my n810, need some help [with e-mail application]!

hey man, here is the deal. go to this website
http://www.gronmayer.com/it/
select all repositories and install them.
it might take a while. when everything is updated, in the application manager click tools, application catalogue, find the 'extras devel' repository, click edit and disable.

by doing this you will have lots and lots of programs listed in the application manager to install. tear should be there. if you ever need to install anything from extras devel, such as tear bookmarks, you can enable it for the install and then disable it again. disabling it us pretty important, so you don't end up with unstable trial versions of software running on your it.
