If my pre-order (from last week) doesnt ship by Monday, I plan to cancel and buy a Palm TX. I'll look at the 770 later when it is AVAILABLE !
|
It plays nicely all the internet radio station's from the good old U.S. Sorry for the comment, but at least us Europeans paid a premium price for it without coupons. Patience, it will be worth it!
|
Some of us didn't know about the coupons because we ordered as fast as we could. Of course I could always cancel my order and reorder to get the $50 off, but then I am sure that I wouldn't get a 770 until december.

Ok, I decided to contact the above rep again since he seemed to be the only person I talked to that spoke with any certainty about the 770's availability. Again, this time, he seems to be a credible source. He said on Monday they were hoping for stock on Thursday but if that didn't happen, they would have more definitive info about when they would be in on Friday (today). He did indeed have new information. He said they have confirmed that they will receive stock on Monday or Tuesday of next week for immediate order fulfillment. Since mine is overnight and already cleared the credit verification, I should get mine before Thanksgiving. By the way, they will be closed Thursday and Friday of next week for the holiday. I also mentioned the posts by various users here and my own experiences about getting different information from different reps. He said he would look into it as that kind of thing would only cause headaches for them as well as customers. This guy is one of their claims reps and not a standard order processing CSR. He comes across as confident in what he said and when he wasn't completely sure (like about whether they would get stock this week), he said as much. He also followed through with having confirmed info today as he said he would. On Monday he mentioned having them in by Thanksgiving and this new info goes right along with that. It's certainly possible that this info could turn out to be incorrect or change at the last minute, but like I said, this rep is the only one I've spoken with who I have any faith in. Jeff |

http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...=1467#post1467 What's "funny" is that according to the claims rep when I first spoke with him Monday, the credit verification problems weren't the reason for the first order being cancelled and what I was told at first about the second one last Wednesday. According to him, it was all a lack of stock issue even though I was being told all along that they were in stock. Who knows what the deal was, but it's clear that there was a severe lack of info. As for getting the credit verifcation pushed through, someone else posted that the Nokia folks said it isn't done until they have units in stock and therefore would complete processing orders. Mine was a weird one where thay thought they had units in stock and were processing the order as such. Even so, as you saw in the linked post, I had to stay on top of them to get it done as their feedback mechanism seems very, very slow. My advice would be to at least make the effort to have them do it now. Explain that you're trying to get the device ASAP and you want to be in a position where it ships out as soon as they have it. If you get resistance from one rep, you could always try calling back and speaking to someone else or heck, ask to speak with a supervisor. Certainly the last thing anyone wants is for it to finally be in stock and then have to wait a day or 2 for credit verification before it actually ships. I'm still curious to hear if other people have trouble getting the credit verification so please post back if you do. Jeff |
I Had It!!!
Screw NOKIA and their stupid little toy. First I sent my just purchased 6682 in for repair FORTYFIVE days ago and to this day they haven't even given me a estimate of when I will see my phone again, if ever. This after they assured me it would take 7 to 10 working days. ......and now they can't even get the 770 release right, that's it! I'm turning to the cingular HTC WIZARD 8125, a much better device all around IMO. I'll get the 770 next year when they're begging people to please buy it for $99.00

Worth the wait
It may take a few weeks, however the positive reviews are starting to show up. http://www.informit.com/articles/article.asp?p=430625

I just got off the phone with Nokia ... they have them in stock and are currently processing orders. It should take a "few days" for them to be shipped.

I plan to purchase a Palm T/X 11/20...post a review.. let the 770 mess settle down..,,see the 770 at CES.. wait for the next improved, version of the 770 (if there is one..) and maybe purchase the 770 (or another IT may be on the market by then) and then pass the Palm T/X on to my wife.... The Palm T/X will be $263 at Best Buy with discounts. |
I called today to ask how my order is progressing. They told me that they got the 770 in and it will be sent out in the next few days. At this point, I don't believe anything Nokia is saying. A crock of..... perhaps.
|
Palm TX ?
Is the 770 worth 75-100 more. Does the Palm unit stream audio? confused? Has anyone used the Palm TX. Does it format the Web Page to fit the screen (like the 770? I would think Web pages can not be displayed in full screen due to the lower res. Can the TX play back movies from the Sd Card

Ok just got off the phone with Nokia rep
I was told yet again that they recieved 600 770's on thursday, and that they have already been shipped. I really don't know what to believe? I was told Friday that Nokia has not recieved any units, the person who told me this said she was in the warehouse and the operator i was speaking too had no idea what he was saying. Tonight this information confirms what the other guy said was in fact true. If he speaks the truth. This is a mystery, someone else inform us of what they have heard! |
I too called a rep just to see what they would say. His response included something along the lines of "...it was launched on Thursday so it will take a few days to start shipping." I asked specifically if they had units in stock ready to ship and he said yes.
In my opinion, there's nothing to be believed until someone here confirms that theirs has shipped out. Too many different stories and too much information that has turned out not to be true. It's obvious that the amount of information they get is limited and that it's not shared equally amongst all reps. Jeff |

1. ptunes [pocket tunes] works pretty well, supports playing ogg, wav, mp3 and internet radio [streaming mpeg]. It's a pretty nice program, BUT, audio playback gets pretty horribly messed up if you try to run it in the background and do any other kind of IO with another app. The 770 demo video show the 770 player working well, even while running other apps simultaneously. 2. A palm TX can browse the web. Blazer is a really annoying browser. It can reformat a page for the small display, or let you pan around a full size page. Blazer's network cache is pretty awful - you have to reload content just going back to the previous page. It's also pretty slow. Opera and the bigger screen should make for a bunch nicer browsing experience. 3. The TX has several movie players available, including a free one which is pretty good, TCPMP, but still not up to a portable media players standards. The palm does OK in this area. Playing off a card works fine. Since I don't have a 770, yet, all I can do is say that the palm video software seems to work ok. The TX is a nice PDA, much smaller than my lifedrive, but they had to slow the CPU down a lot to compensate for WIFI use with a smaller battery. I've read that it's not too noticable, but I'd expect that video playback will be affected at least a little bit. I should also point out that if the sensitivity of the TX'es wifi radio isn't better than on my lifedrive, you may be disappointed. There may be some overlap in functionality, but I really don't see these devices as direct competitors, any more so than I think it makes sense to compare a TX to a PSP. I don't see myself getting rid of my lifedrive when the 770 shows up, especially since it should make a fine self powered 4GB usb hard drive for the 770. :-) I plan to do a lot of business related hacking on this device, so the money really isn't an issue. Pretending for a moment that I was just a regular user buying one for pleasure, than the question of wether it is worth the extra $70 USD really depends on how much and how often you plan to use the 770 for it's intended purpose. Palm accessories are often quite expensive, so you may find that total cost of ownership is actually about equal. |

Just a heads up to folks on here. Dr. Ari Jaaksi works for Nokia and has been the front man for the 770. He happens to have a blog where he has discussed the 770 over the past few months. Not that I think he can do much about the availbility issue, but I have posted a comment on his most recent blog entry about the problem so at least he's aware of it. Here's a link to the blog:

Nokia 770 vs Palm X
Spoke with Nokia today. It sounds like the "motherload" has arrived. The rep stated he expects anyone that has an order will get it this week(even the Dec 14 date orders).
After reading many reviews(thanks WADDELL for the review) , the 770 seems to be better for muiltmedia . Since this will be a part time replacement for my laptop, having better res , larger screen and better multitasking capibilities is important. The open source will provide just about any application that is needed. The $50.00 OFF code puts this close to the $300.00 price range. Circuit City has a tempting offer today for the Palm X (249.00) Web Special in store pick . (Best Buy will Match). |
I really hope that this information is correct. If so, all the confusion will be easily forgotten.

To clarify, multimedia is the one area I'm not to sure about. The 770 processor seems a little underpowered for video relative to the screen size, until someone takes the time to use the processor properly. It contain 2D graphics accelerators and it's own DSP, http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/wtb...data/omap_1710 so I expect it should be pretty capable. As it stands right now, you can do video, http://www.internettablettalk.com/blog/?p=159 but not full frame. This is still comparable to what you'd see on a palm device though. The palm is a mature product and has mature solutions for video. The 770 is a young product - so young in fact that I don't even have one yet. I think the 770 video playback software will improve over then next few months, but that's just a WAG. If video was my primary motivation for getting such a device, I'd get something designed from the start to be a video player, e.g. an archos pmp, or just use a portable DVD player which costs < $200 USD. For me video is around #4 in importance - reasonable performance is all I need on this device. I guess it goes without saying, but I'd really like to get my hands on a 770 to see what that baby is capable of first hand. My order still says "open" and processed on nov 14th, so I hope it gets shipped early next week as some people have stated was their understanding of the situation. |

Just an aside to any Canadians being bored on the sidelines of the great 770 wait, the T/X is available to us. Now it's just a matter of seeing which wins out, my patience with Nokia, or my want for a new toy.
|
As a European (and yes, a 770 owner) it could be worse - Europe had to wait almost a full year before the PSP became available!
Nokia may not have executed as well as they might with their 770 production runs and distribution, but the wait could have been a whole lot longer if Nokia had the same cr@p mentality as Sony, so maybe cut Nokia some slack guys! I'm sure they're working as hard as they can to get you your 770's :) |

Have you really checked the HTC WIZARD? That thing rocks! ................ Hey look, M$ BILL and his gang are already working on a similar device running WM 6.0 that will be way better. So NOKIA keep taking your time putting this out, next year you will have to contend with MICROSOFT, APPLE, SAMSUNG and everyone else launching internet tablets on their own. Good look.

I guess my point is, perhaps Nokia would have been better off not announcing the US launch until two or three months after the European launch (ie. Jan 2006 at the earliest) - perhaps Nokia should have filled all the European orders first, then announced the US launch only once the demand had been satisfied in Europe. That's the sort of thing they could have done, and maybe should have done given the demand. I'm sure that would have gone down less well than waiting the few weeks you all are now. Nokia have dropped the ball big time in terms of expectation management, and with all the negative publicity would have been better off keeping the US waiting for months, instead they're doing their best to get units to the US as soon as possible. And for their efforts they're accused of "potentially harming the future of the 770" - I guess they figure they can't win! :) Hopefully demand significantly outstripping supply can be taken as a "good thing", and will have no effect whatsoever on the long term viability of this product or any successors. And yes, it's easier for me to make these comments as I already have one - but then I also waited for a PSP... and eventually gave up and ordered one from Japan 6 months before the European launch. While I didn't pony up the money to Sony and then have to wait, I do have some understanding of what you're going through. At least Nokia seem pretty honourable and doing their best, which is the last thing that comes to mind when talking about Sony these days... |
Part of my displeasure is the additional waiting, but I'm kind of used to that as there's usually always something new that I'm waiting to be released. I'm a bleeding edge of technology guy so this kind of thing is not unexpected. By the way, I also ordered a PSP from Japan when it launched there last December as I couldn't wait for the US launch.
What gets me is when companies, especially large ones that should know better, mishandle situations like this. While delaying the launch until suitable stock was available would have caused me a longer wait, it would have been a far better business decision. A lot of folks probably don't care much about this aspect, but I do. This product type faces many challenges to being successful in the marketplace without having launch supply problems. Proper product management includes putting together a marketing and distribtuion strategy that maximizes the product's sales potential. Thusfar, Nokia has stumbled. It is by no means a lost cause, but every day that goes by without it being rectified, the situation gets worse. Let me just throw out a few roadblocks to the 770's potential success: - See my marketing challenges post a while back http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...=1143#post1143 - The holiday season is rapidly approaching. They really need to fix this supply issue or risk losing a significant number of such sales. The price point is enough to make it something that some would reserve for a "special occasion" type purchase. Ideally, the marketing would have been in place a while back to maximize this buying period but obviously, that hasn't happened. - Gates and Intel are pushing a handheld sized version of the tablet PC. Apple is rumored to be working on a handheld of their own. While there would be various ways to compete with either or both, Nokia would be far better served to get the 770 out and firmly established to make the other guys play catch-up. If and when those others materialize, the fight will be much tougher. - Nokia has in the 770 a type of sale that they aren't as used to. Rather than having carriers subsidize the cost of expensive handsets and allow them to easily move many millions of units, they have to sell the 770 in a traditional retail environment. That's a challenge for them and requires a change in thinking. If they can get broadband providers on board to offer 770s with new service signups, that's great, but it's still not the same thing as the cell phone business where a cell phone is a necessary ingredient to using the service. There are many devices customers can bring to use with broadband service. These are just some of the challenges they have in making the 770 successful. No need to pile on top with launch confusion and quantity shortages. Jeff |
In all honesty it boils down to this; we're impatient consumers. We want. Not now, yesterday. Or maybe the day before. If Europe got it months before the US and Canada did (I had to throw in Canada for bitterness' sake) you'd still hear the irate comments.
If the 770 was windows based, I wouldn't be interested in it to be honest, I'd probably shell out for a TX. Originally I just wanted a PDA with a browser and Wifi connectivity. The open horizon so far as software's concerned is what the main appeal of the 770 is for me. Otherwise it'd just be another PDA with a bunch of overly expensive software packages for me to buy. |
Called NokiaUSA Order Center - No New News

After a weekend of mild disappointment, I'm reconciled to be okay with that and will just be surprised if they release them any earlier than Dec 14th. As stated in some of the previous posts, Nokia is certainly trying and making progress and if they deliver only 2.5 months after their original planned release date of Sept 30th, they're meeting their release expectations better than most other large software companies these days. Besides, I got a lot more work around the house/yard completed this past weekend given I didn't have new toys to divert my attentions and responsibilities. Robert :) |
After telling me an order arrived on Friday (11/18), and most backorders would be sent out in the next few days, Nokia is back to saying that orders would be sent out on 12/14. Possibly Cheney is a major share holder ?

This is so whack, Called first thing this morning Nov. 21, 2005
This new rep say's that they have received the first shipment and that they are processing the orders but NONE have been shipped. I was told that they will be shipped in December. Someone else call them and post what they tell you. Damn I was hoping based on calls during and prior to this weekend atleast some of us would get them sent to us today! I even made them tell me an estimate of where I was in the Queue line last friday. They estimated since I beat the /.'ers that I was around 300-ish how they come to these figures or this so called "Motherload" which btw a motherload is not 600 units! ohh and they don't even know where they are comming from, I have never heard one rep say as to if it's Finland, or Germany? let's just keep on the phones and play this like the mystery it has become. |
If Cheney was a shareholder, we'd have them, as he, and any other shareholder, expects sales/profits for their investments.
|
Well, I called to see if they could tell me where my order was on the waiting list. This particular rep didn't know but when I asked about availability, she said December 1st. I think that may be a new response to add to the ever growing list of responses Nokia reps are giving out about the 770. Round and round we go....
Jeff |
The only possibility is that they are making units for adsl-operators right now and Nokia has underestimated the demand of this device (without subsidizing)
|
O orderd my 770 on the 15th. I am told Dec 1st is the ship date
I've gotthe same information as all of you. December 1st is the new shipdate. That's ok. I am getting my Nokia 770 development environment together!
|
Both Cheney and Bush talk on bothsides of their mouth.
|
I certainly wouldn't try to discourage anyone from looking for a substitute at this point if they feel the need to buy something right away. For example, Tivo2Go is adding support for the ipod w/ video, so for people who mostly want to watch tv on the go, why not just get one of those instead?
For me, there really isn't another option. I have specific applications in mind for which the 770 is the only thing which will available anytime soon which will suit my needs. I just hope that this isn't going to turn out to be a case of "wanting is better than having". |
