I printed this thread to cut out TripleNickels posts

and wipe my *** with them, add me to your list TripleNickel cause I wipe your posts against my hairy arse ; )

*EDIT* I paitently await my 770 regardless of even having to wait for a hand soldered unit. I paitently await my 770 regardless of QA. I paitently await my 770 regardless of not enough units made. I paitently await my 770 regardless of lack of memory. I paitently await my 770 regardless of poor conectivity, antenna, or whatever. I paitently await my 770 regardless of bugs in software. I could go on and on, I'm really excited about the 770 and people cancelling and *****ing, has no affect on how I feel about a device, that enables me to do aspects of my job and fit within my back pocket.

Be sure to double up and make it 2-ply!

Hedgecore 2005-11-28 14:09

Guys, guys! C'mon. We shouldn't fight amongst ourselves. We should be yelling at innocent Nokia phone reps and coming up with arbitrary stock numbers!

So... Candy on the order desk said the U.S. had 3 at time of launch. I hate her.

:D

nickmar 2005-11-28 16:02

Same line - the rep I spoke to said that they are still expecting to receive and ship them in December.

ChuckP 2005-11-28 16:25

10:02 Cst

next shipment expected to arrive dec. 13th. No information whatsoever, had to wait 15 mins before I got this lil info and it's all the info they have.

Well, that jives with the December 14th date that was given out by reps previously and was the date shown for online orders before the January 31st date that is shown there now. Who knows how accurate it is, though.

No idea, and I have no idea how many have shipped already. Even if I'd know I couldn't tell you as this is strictly company confidential information.

This is from Samuel who works for Nokia and is a user on this board, he shut me down too quickly. Someone else bother him for being an employee of Nokia.

Concrete Donkey 2005-11-29 00:23

Chuck, we'd all like to know if the units shipping in December will be any different than the (few) units in circulation now.

ChuckP 2005-11-29 02:28

hmmm

well I got $20 that they dont have the updated firmware on them. Also there isn't enough time for them to do anything to them if they have 10,000 units. I really dont think you'll see a single hardware change take place. I think this is all software based. anyone else hang out at the maemo irc channel, I'm socrates if you do.

skynetos 2005-11-29 12:00

So with CompUSA carrying the Nokia770 and a new firmware update and reports of Euro customers unit' shipping.. I hope something happens soon for us Americans.

anyone care to call today!?!?!?!?! :)

So why exactly can't you call yourself?

By the way, as soon as anyone here gets a shipping confirmation, they'll almost certainly post about it. You won't have to wait for someone to call and find out the latest story. Speaking of which, given the changing story time after time, any "new" info is unlikely to be reliable anyway. My guess is also that retail channels are entirely separate from direct sales so they probably won't even be aware that CompUSA has it listed.

rgbyhkr 2005-11-29 18:21

Nice to see the folks in Europe start to get their second round of shipments while the US hasn't even had one. :(

ChuckP 2005-12-02 17:09

I agree a phone call is in order. I feel an edit on its way.

pushed to January 6th, I'm just gonna be quiet and read responces to this one.

Jeffgrado 2005-12-02 17:41

I just get a "sometime in December" answer.

Hedgecore 2005-12-02 18:10

I've been quiet because griping just cheeses off everyone else... but I think that in true modern marketing style they've been hoarding the US units for retail chains. Logistics are easier for Nokia to deal in bulk like that. The bizarre nature of making people who've already filled orders have to wait 60 days before they're fulfilled just strikes me as odd though. Not the way to win hearts.

bigboote 2005-12-02 20:31

In stock at MLT CompUSA

I have to second hedgecore's sentiments:

I just called the Mountlake Terrace, WA (near Seattle) CompUSA and they now have a display up (with a working unit), and will have stock out on the floor this afternoon.

So the question becomes: hang on with your internet order - which will be shipped God and Nokia only knows when - or cancel it and buy one at CompUSA for $100 more (assuming you got in on the $50 online rebate)?

Is that what Nokia wants us to do?

well.. Nov 15th European orders have shipped.. I was hoping my US Nov 15th would ship before x-mas!

Aww, I'm a Nov 14th 9:19PM EST order in the US, and the web site even still says it processed Nov 14th, but of course the order is still open :/

Azimuth Media 2005-12-02 20:56

Phoenix CUSA Status

None in the PV CompUSA here in Phoenix. Teenagers currently assembling Nokia 770, but no floor models/stock. Staff has no idea where they are.

I have to say, I am pretty peeved that they are out to CUSA before filling our orders, but then again, I JUST WENT THERE TO CUSA TO BUY ONE FOR $50.00 Extra!

I, friends, am a dork.

lbattraw 2005-12-03 00:51

Still waiting in Indy

Well, after some consideration I guess I can see Nokia's point of view... Their biggest interest is likely to get the 770 in front of as many people as possible in meatspace-- somewhere they can actually handle it and bask in the wonderfullness of its screen ;) Just advertising online to a selected few fan-atics like us will not make for success. Part of that is doubtless a contractual agreement with CUSA. I can just hear the pitch:

CUSA: "You want us to do what?"
Nokia: "We want you to sell this new web-tablet-"
C: "WHAT is a web tablet and why do we want to sell it for you???"
N: "Well it's super-cool and has these amazing features..."
C: "And you want to sell it on your site for $40 less before we even have a chance? Right. Don't call us, we'll call you!"

I imagine the agreement may have included delightful terms like a mandatory hold period for online orders to allow the stores to get their units in stock and maybe even a delay to ship until after the holidays. I just really wish they hadn't even bothered to take the orders and then sit on them. Maybe the deal was completed after they started taking orders? Who knows. It does not look good for getting a unit any time soon though.

GLeoni 2005-12-03 04:49

Went to the Compusa in Emeryville, California (North of San Francisco). They didn't have a display up nor did they have any idea what the device was. They even told me they were not going to carry it. I pointed it out to them on their own website. They agreed to special order it for me or to pull from stock once it arrived. Who knows what that means.....

MadMatt 2005-12-03 13:01

Another consipiracy theory.....
C: "This is a great product, can we be a sales channel?"
N: "What's in it for us. We've had thousands of people sign up for our email alert on when it's going to be available and we haven't even told them about it yet."
C: "If you can blow off your existing pre-orders a while and ramp up production, we'll be your sales channel AND you can charge us retail price because this is such a cool product, we can charge $50 more and people will still buy it."
N: "Heck, what do we have to loose? We've delayed this product a few times already, what's it going to hurt to delay another month or two - OK, you've got a deal."

skynetos 2005-12-03 13:57

hmmm.. this morning my order said Processed Dec 3rd, then it switched back to Processed November 15th.

ChuckP 2005-12-03 18:59

Damn Nokia, that pic made my heart hurt!

skynetos 2005-12-03 19:13

hey.. it feels so good in my hands... you have NO IDEA. :)
I finally got this unit.. I hope it takes off, I don't want a repeat of my Zaurus!

mishref 2005-12-04 07:43

I called NokiaUSA to get an update regarding my order; apparently they will be shipping on Jan. 6th. I asked them why CompUSA is selling them before Nokia even filled its initial sales ... they just kept telling me that they will be shipping on Jan. 6th. All in all .. a very useless phone call.

MadMatt 2005-12-04 18:33

I signed up for email notification on availability of Nokia 770 (back in August I believe), still no word from Nokia even since it was available for pre-order in the US on Nov 14. I signed up for CompUsa's email notification last week and recieved an email from CompUsa Saturday.

I've been patient, but with this CompUSA fiasco, I must say I'm getting a bad taste in my mouth with Nokia, but I will remain patiently optimistic for another week.

I'm hoping something positive comes for us Nov 14th preorder guys this week......

mishref 2005-12-05 15:06

According to Nokia ' Its not what you know, its when you know' about the Nokia 770. We know it exists and that they will ship it, just not when. I cancelled my order and picked it up from my local CompUSA store .. I guess I know now.

dillera 2005-12-05 19:16

This is total crap. I really want this device, but I can't believe Nokia is f*cking us over this bad, just to give Compusa some 'alone time' with the fricking device.

What rubbish.

No way will I buy it from Compusa - just for this reason.

Drat, but I really want one BEFORE XMAS.

ChuckP 2005-12-06 05:37

I'm hangin Tough waiting for my Nokia 770, I will be around a CompUsa this friday and I'm not even going to set foot in it. I am waiting for Nokia to make good on my order.

mr.wilson 2005-12-06 08:59

Waiting, waiting, waiting, for the ..

I really would like to go buy this thing at CUSA but i feellike im crossing the picket line at this point, so i will wait for my nov 14th order to be fullfiled. The only thing I want more than to own a 770 is for another company to make a competing product.

faiyaz 2005-12-06 19:39

This is the reply I got form their customer service today regarding the 770:
Sounds like they really want people to cancel..... And why do they refer to it as a "cable"...

-----------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for writing to Nokia Customer Care. We appreciated hearing from you.

I have checked my system concerning your order and have found that your confirmation order #57319XXX is still on back order status. We are looking to receive inventory by the end of December. Did you want to keep this item on back order, or would you like for us to cancel it so that you can try to obtain the cable from another source? Please contact us after you have decided whether to keep this item on back order or if you would like for us to cancel the order for you.

Thank you again for writing to us, and we hope to hear from you soon with your decision at your earliest convenience.

I tried submitting a story about the 770 being onsale at CompUSA and how Nokia aren't shipping the pre orders to Slashdot but they ignored the submission. Not surprised with the editors seemingly smoking crack the whole time these days based on the stories they do run. Perhaps someone else might like to try? A lot of Slashdot geeks would have pre-ordered units I imagine after they ran the story about the 770 a few weeks ago.

bradb 2005-12-06 20:28

Hmmm.... well, I realize that Nokia screwed up the launch, and the CompUSA issue should be a total embarassment (not to mention I'd bet Nokia makes more profit selling direct than through dealers) but to whine about paying $100 more because of a coupon you found seems a bit childish.

There isn't really any such thing as a free lunch kids. Me, I'm far from rich but it's been worth the extra $$$ to me to have it in my hands now and not later.

My .02.

got an e-mail

Hm, I got an e-mail from NokiaUSA regarding my Nov 14th order. I'm not sure if my order is messed up, or if it's an automated e-mail, or if more people can expect this e-mail, or what. Going to call later on when work isn't busy.

Me Too

Just got an email too. Makes it sound like it's MY problem they couldn't complete the order.

coldfused 2005-12-06 22:48

Me too. What's strange is that I canceleld my order yesterday.

Azimuth Media 2005-12-06 23:07

Just Called 'Em

The nice lady said, as per script, they expected them to ship before the end of the month, but had to 'double check' the billing info. I think they want to see how many people fail to respond to the email, thereby freeing up more stock for CUSA!

I asked if 'before the end of this month' meant 'before xmas', as the 770 was a gift. She said she didn't know, but that my order (11/14 in the A.M.) was at the head of the list. She also said that they recieved 'more orders than they expected. Yeah.

I'm just gonna let it ride, and if I get it before xmas, I'll return my CUSA one. Or maybe keep it for myself. I quite like it.

ks1g 2005-12-06 23:18

I recieved the same email a few minutes ago and just got off the phone with them. They're "reconfirming" orders from mid November (my order was on 11/15). The "promised" ship date is "by Dec 30", they *hope* it will be sooner than that. Yes, they're checking if people are getting fed up with the wait. The nice lady I spoke with *ASSURED* me she's at the US distribution warehouse and she doesn't know where the retail stores are getting their stock as they don't have any. No matter - I can wait (present for me :) ) and saving $100 vs CompUSA (assuming they have ANY left on hand) is better than instant gratification. I can keep using my 5-year old Vaio 505 in the meantime; it will give me a good basis of comparison when the 770 arrives.

waddell 2005-12-06 23:35

This may not be a popular thing to say, but from a business perspective, I understand why they think what they have done is a good idea. They probably feel that there is a bigger upside to getting 770 displays into compusa stores during the holidays than there is to honoring the commitments they made to early, direct sales. I hope they are right, since strong sales are required for the long-term viability of this platform and any hope of a new, improved version anytime soon. It will also encourage competitors. Hopefully, some of these new competitors won't mistreat their
customers.

As for the downside of their actions, Nokia assumed, and I think from the posts on this board correctly so, that most people who placed pre-orders would just go to compusa and get one. Others will not cancel their online orders because of the price difference, which is also understandable. But, I suspect that very few people who really want one are going to get something else because they have been mistreated - nokia has very little real competition for this device. If one thing is evident, it's that nokia isn't all that worried about us getting angry at them.

It was a very bitter pill to swallow, but now that I have capitulated and bought one from compusa, I want to get down to the business of porting apps and trying to improve it.

Getting one from compusa, waiting for your pre-order, or walking away on principle are the only three choices we have right now. There really isn't a "right answer" because this isn't a moral issue. Just pick whichever one makes your feel best, or at least makes you feel the least dirty, and reconcile yourself to it - you'll feel a lot better afterwards.

Hedgecore 2005-12-06 23:38

Exactly, pre-orders identified you as a die-hard, and die-hards will buy them anyway. Here's the anatomy of the situation.

1.) #*$&#$& Nokia, that was underhanded and very very poor of them
2.) I just got mine at CompUSA.

...

*shrug*
