Stand for 770

What does everyone use to prop up your 770? Im using a stand i had made a few years back for a 20gig ipod. Is there a market for a stand?

unuselessj 2006-08-19 20:37

I use the one that came with it. It fits nicely right next to my keyboard tray.

Odin 2006-08-19 23:22

The puzzle.

After I figured out what it was and how to assemble it (just gitt'n old), I found the same usefulness. What is sort of neat is the Norse-like style of it. Sort of like one of those viking lodges that have the crossed-poles at the end of the roof line. It also has rune-like patterns etched in the feet to give a non-slip surface.

I can't imagine why they chose a design theme like that--I mean, why didn't they go for Chinese pagoda, or Japanese Shinto temple, or even FLW Prairie style?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who went "huh?" when first trying to asssemble it. :D

This is what i had in mind for a stand for the 770. I'm wondering if there is a market for these. I could make them from aluminium as shown or ABS plastic.

aflegg 2006-08-26 12:42

Very nice. Aluminium would be good, but could be too pricey?

It might also be worth seeing if there could be any restraining corner or something at the bottom edges to stop it slipping forward - not sure if that'd work with the existing design, unless the left/right leaves folded forward again.

wiredless 2006-08-26 13:03

aflegg, my initial thoughts were the same for making it more secure but seemed it would be harder to set the 770 in the stand, so i opted to have the padding force fit, meaning you have to push the 770 into the cradle (snug fit). The angle the 770 sits is also very stable (wont fall forward). I had seen a mini mirror that looked the the apple imac (iLamp)? model. What i would really love is that articulated arm design that would be super sweet. Cost would naturally be a big factor, my feeling is USA $20 would be a sweet spot.

Wireless 2006-08-26 13:08

Man I like it. In fact, where is the order form? Is that a real item or is that something you Photoshopped? I tell ya what, it would not be limited to just the NOKIA 770. I would love to have one for my MDA (VARIO to those in UK) and myu Cingular 2125. It looks nice and it serves a purpose, allowing one to have a spot dedictaed to the phone and it just plain looks good. My only suggestion, a cutout so one could have the USB cable or AC charger connected while in the stand.

Nice Work

Add me too!. Except my "Huh" was a bit more along the lines of "WTF?". !! LOL (Putting the holes with the mating dimples was not fair, threw me way off!!)

Count me in at US$20.

Bill

Scurzuzu 2006-08-27 05:59

Yes!, count me in for one definitely at (or around) $20. I use the 2-part stand provided by Nokia, which basically means I rarely if ever use a stand at all. I'd love to have something nice and sturdy like this, especially when it lifts it off the desk so much.

ascherjim 2006-08-27 06:03

While I am quite content with the stand that came with the 770 -- for carrying around with me -- this stand, if reasonably priced, would be great to keep on my desk. Please keep us potential buyers informed. I do subscribe to the feature of permitting the charger and USB cables attached when in the stand.

wiredless 2006-08-27 08:40

The stand does have complete access to the ports audio/mic/charger and usb. The concept stand was cut out of plate aluminum on a band saw and hand finished. How do you feel about the finish. What would your choice in finish be out of painted white/black or natural brushed metal or bead blasted. Also what are peoples thoughts on having a hole in the back of the stand to rout the cords through. Im going to price some options monday for having these either cut out on a C&C or water jet.

Scurzuzu 2006-08-28 13:17

I like the stand pretty much exactly as pictured in the photo--I'd rather it be aluminum than acrylic, and I'd rather it be left unpainted.

I'd prefer a hole in the back of the stand for the cables, but I can see that the cables will plug in regardless, so for me it's just an aesthetic preference (keeps the front looking a little cleaner). If you end up not putting a hole in the back, it's not a deal breaker for me.

Please do keep us informed on what you decide re. pricing and availability. I'm not interested in cases because I find the built-in lid works fine, but I'd LOVE a good, sturdy stand for the little guy.

d_mon 2006-08-28 15:14

Boy...that stand is really gorgeous!
I would buy it too!
Good job Wiredless! :)

masdeirf 2006-08-28 15:48

Great, I would buy it too!!!

thoughtfix 2006-08-28 16:17

*drools* Let me know if this reaches market.

SeRi@lDiE 2006-08-28 21:46

Count me in!
Please post it here when is available for grabs!
Nice Work and Thank You!

Neil McAllister 2006-08-29 00:26

It looks nice, but I don't think it's for me. Definitely a "stay-at-home" stand vs. the one it comes with, which can be taken down and transported in a carry-on bag quite easily (folds flat, no metal to upset the security folks at the airport).

bradb 2006-08-29 04:30

Well... as this thread started asking about what stand you use, I'll have to reply:

Huh?

Stand? What stand? Why?

My 770 is either in my hands, sitting on the Nokia keyboard, or just laying flat (connected via wifi). I stopped putting it on a stand months ago.

Looks pretty, but does me no good.

I like the stand shown though, but since it adds no expansion ports it's just no use to me. Looks nice, kudos.

Brad.

Wesley 2006-08-29 15:59

I'm in. $20 would indeed be sweet.

Can you leave the OEM hard case in the stand easily?

Brad-- All is vanity. A stand like that will look awesome next to my Mac Mini.

BanditRider 2006-08-29 16:45

How about a good vehicle mount?

Salidwyn 2006-08-30 00:05

A good vehicle mount would be wonderful! That's something I'd really like to see though you probably would benefit from putting a small lip around the front edges to help hold it in for the people who have different cases and such. All the ones I've seen (honestly haven't looked too deeply into it) to fit are generic and require attaching sticky things to the back of it and that's just not going to work.

A nice aluminum mount like this would look beautiful in ANY car. Might be a bit tricky to do though and a movable arm for a car mount (even a tiny one) would be really helpful. Sounds like an art project for some day.

Odin 2006-08-30 02:39

The well-dressed modern desk.

Frankly, I think the cut and finish of your prototype is perfect. Has that "Danish Modern", no nonsense, cold north icy-edge look to it--fits the 770 perfectly. The 770 is the least pretentious of all the handheld computing devices out there. I think they put the little speaker grill on there just to outrage the "frou-frou" designers.

Definitely go for the cutout for the wiring. Form follows function.

770mojo 2006-09-03 05:09

Looks absolutely stunning! I have to have two! One for my home office and another for my home cinema!! Please keep me posted as to when I can order your stand!!

I agree that a matching vehicle mount would be perfect!! And if anyone knows of a truely designer, black leather case for the 770, please let me know! I've been looking for case options for three weeks and have been sadly disappointed by what's available.

Kudos Wireless!! Impressive design!

SeRi@lDiE 2006-09-10 05:49

Any updates?

Wireless 2006-09-10 07:38

Ready to buy still as well. Lets get the factories running and production flowing!!

Rocketman 2006-09-10 09:54

Put me down for one as well. I would be willing to pay $25+S&H for one.

Biomech 2006-09-13 02:38

Count me in

I love the look of your prototype and I'll pick one up as soon as they are available.

konfoo 2006-09-13 06:54

I'm down for one

acydlord 2006-09-15 11:45

That stand looks sweet. I wouldn't mind seeing one in ABS that matches the OEM case from nokia so that you could just slide the 770 in to the base, that would be pretty nifty.

Mike Cane 2006-09-23 22:18

Wow. Nice stand. Don't know that I want it. Extraneous to the way I do things. Hope it does get to market, though. Good luck.

thoughtout.biz 2006-09-24 13:36

Such great compliments, thanks!

We have many "XL" Ped2 prototypes device pedestals configured here at THOUGHT OUT...Co. and use them for various things. The standard Ped2 has a configurable setup (PEDHead) for any size from 2 to 3 inches, this works with practically all vertical portable electronic devices. The PEDHead design feature allows for an optimal pivoting viewing angle at any moment. All contacting edges of the holder incorporates 3M rubber protection and grip (your device will not fall out, even in a car - see FlexPED for auto, boat application etc).

We are interested in bringing this to your market and have the ability to do so feasibly right away. If you are interested please contact me with your request at mike@thoughtout.biz

ascherjim 2006-09-24 13:48

I would be interested in such a holder for my Nokia 770. I will watch this forum for any further information from Mike.

aflegg 2006-09-24 13:52

The XL Ped2 prototype looks perfect for a 770, looking forward to being able to try one (dunno if you ship internationally, though)

Odin 2006-09-24 23:38

We've come full circle.

I was bemused by your "MagStay Pro" device. When I first heard of the magnetic connector on the Mac Books, I thought "how clever!", which is the general response to most of what Apple does. Then I bought a MacBook Pro core-duo and discovered that the power connector is a two-edged sword, mixed blessing, etc... Your product reverses Apple's novelty, but what is really needed (as an engineer, I cannot help myself) is a lever on the existing power plug that allows a choice; i.e., magnetically connected for the clumsier user and "locked on" for those of us who handle the book roughly and are constantly annoyed by the magnetic catch. To be fair, it looks like your device still permits disconnect when the cord is tugged.

To all, sorry to go off topic a bit. If you have seen the recent Mac vs PC (business dweeb vs "cool dude") commercial where "PC" is sporting casts after being dragged off the desktop, you will understand this discussion.

PED2 "XL" 770 Stand

Ok, we have giving this some thought and decided to give something a try for our forum friends. The "XL" version of the PED2 will be an optional kit to fit to size of the 770 horizontally (and more). The "XL" kit will cost about $7.50, but we are still working that cost.

For a limited time and for a limited amount of people we will send you this "XL" kit for FREE as long as you can send us some feed back (and pictures too). You will need to purchase the PED2 for the "XL" kit to work.

If anyone is interested is this please email me at mike@thoughtout.biz or simply place the order for the PED2 and leave a note to send the "XL" kit for the 770.

And this still includeds the FREE CD offer! Sophia Ramos just contacted me and she has joined the list offered CD's too! Look for her CD shortly.

To check out the PED2 and our other great stuff click http://thoughtout.biz/products.htm

Thanks
Mike

Mike, I would love to try one out. It hard to hold the Nokia770 in one hand trying to surf and eat my lunch while sitting at a Panera or other such Wifi hotspots.
