Okay, what about this site? http://www.wordtwist.org/init.php This game is actually very entertaining as well since it's loaded with statistics and features. However, the issue I'm having with this site is that dragging the stylus over the letters to form words, it stops after only two of them. :( It happens with Microb as well. Any possible setting I can change on the tablet for this to work? Thanks Bundyo! |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Unfortunately this one relies on hovers to mark the letters, couldn't get it to mark more than two either on N800, N900 or on my eee touchscreen regardless of browser.

Well, is it possible to launch Tear to a specific X,Y coordinate? What I mean by this is to have the viewing area in Tear fixed at a certain spot on the screen. If I rotate the screen and moved that webpage up and to the left, that might work okay. It takes too long to move the screen manually, and for some reason, I can't seem to move it up and down. http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/7...0041518403.png This way, it would give some extra room where I could make a new Xkbd keyboard on the bottom of the screen to type the letters instead. So yeah, any ideas from you on how to best play this on a N800 without a BT keyboard would be awesome. I need my word fix on the tablet. I'm tired of playing Scramble 2 on the wife's Iphone (and so is she). :) |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
It is a pity Tear is no longer maintained by it's authors, having still so many bugs.
Fortunately, there is somebody that is working on making it usable. I found it by chance in another unrelated thread, so I'm bringing it here: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=623046&postcount=7 http://skriblovsky.net/maemo/ |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Thanks for making that clear :-)
I thought I'd seen something like that while skimming through the "Telescope" thread, but wasn't sure. Shows why thread-jacking is bad ! :-) |

Are you sure Tear is no longer being maintained? I seem to have seen Bundyo in this thread fairly recently... |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Yup, I'm here. I'm currently working on something else and even for it I have very little time. However I plan on returning on Tear later.
I didn't see any source for this improvement package though, so I can't tell what it does exactly. |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
some set of patches would have been nice indeed. Until then i am holding back installing as i know neither the creator nor the forum and its community.

Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
This is a pretty good example of development for the N900 and ultimately, perhaps, Linux. Since many awesome projects are maintained by people who don't get paid for that particular project and since we all have to eat, projects are never quite finished. Or for the N900, they never really achieve a usable state. It's a damn shame.
The story about "not having time for this project now, since my life is crazy busy" seems to be the prevailing one and I've taken it as meaning "since I gotta do stuff that puts food on the table". Thanks to every open source developer though, for your efforts! I understand perfectly the difficulties associated with doing free, unpaid work. |

Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
the problem right now is that maemo (especially 4) is a very small platform target.
if it had the target of say x86 in general, the chance of picking up new people with knowhow to help will greatly increase. but the handheld devices area have for most of its time been about "complete" devices. That is, when its ships nothing more is done. This have changed in recent years with various smartphone platforms, but they are still much smaller, and much more fragmented, then the PC. Heck, its like watching the micro computers back in the 80s all over again. |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Hi all
I'm the author of tear-improvements package. Let me clarify what is tear-improvements package, why it was developed and what it adds to tear on diablo. First of all, i want to appreciate Bundyo for his great browser -- it still #1 application on my tablet for last 1.5 years. Thanks, great job! I was pleased to see every new Tear release. But eventually with release of N900 and Maemo5 author's priorities was changed and it was a big disappointment for all of us that Tear lost its compatibility with Diablo and diablo version was dropped without any updates. Thats why some day i checked out the last svn revision of Tear that successfully compiles under Diablo (rev 55) and started to add some things i was dreamed about. Then i found that many people at biggest russian maemo forum at http://n8xx.com were interested in same tear modifications. So, i packed my additions as tear-improvement package and placed in my repository at http://skriblovsky.net/maemo/ . I was not sure that i will continue development and i was too lazy to host the source code anywhere :( I just released several packages with only the binary replacement to tear. I'm going to correct this and publish the source code. Here is it: http://skriblovsky.net/maemo/tear-im...0.1.8.2.tar.gz Of course, because i was a guest at tear's sources, some features may be implemented ugly, chaotically and illogically, but Feci quod potui, faciant meliora potentes. The list of modifications in tear-improvements v0.1.8.2:
You may diff the sources against tear rev 55 to get the patch BTW, there was another package called tear-mod. This is my first package and it was packaged as replacement to original tear and marked as conflicting with original tear. If somebody have installed it, please remove it, and install tear-improvements, since tear-mod is obsoleted. |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Thanks Mitrandir, I have "hated" Tear for a long time due to how buggy it is - and, yes I'm vain, how incredibly ugly the speed dial screen is with "blue on blue".
Your improvements to Tear has made me go back and give it another try. Start screen is still fugly but these improvement does make it a MUCH better browser. Thanks to both of you! (Bundyo and Mitrandir). |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Thank you Mitrandir for the improvements you've added, they are great indeed. If you want I can give you access to the garage project and SVN so you can integrate your patches.
|
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Thanks, i would appreciate access to SVN. I could create branch for diablo code and integrate my changes to it. This will also give me a chance to rework my code and make it more consistent with main sources, because now i'm much more familiar with Tear's code than when i started to work on my patches.
Anyway, my local repository is not good place indeed for the code of GNU-licensed project :) I still have many ideas of improvements for Tear and i will be happy if i will have time to continue to work on them. Of course, if there will be enough interest to Tear from the community after today's release of Opera Mobile ;) |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Okay, then you will need to register in Garage (if you didn't already) and request to join the project.
|
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Thanks, i have sent the request
I think it some of my changes can be integrated to Fremantle code, but i have no N900, so i wont be able to test them. I think if any of patches are interesting for Fremantle, developers who have N900 can review my patches and port them to fremantle trunk |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Well, I'm the only currently "active" developer AFAIK :) So, I'll check them out, thanks :)
|
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Ahh, i see. I just saw that five people more in developers :)
|
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Yup, but the check-ins were scarce lately (mine too :)
|
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Nice to see everything is back in order and in the proper thread :-)
Mitrandir, nice touch with the active area on the right: until now I had not understood at all, and was wondering why part of the screen was scrolling the opposite way from the rest :-) Now that I know it feels very natural. Same for the "reload" button... BTW, maybe versioning the "with tear-improvements" in Tear's About box might be useful ? Thanks again for your work. I, too, use Tear 99,xx% of the time when on the N810, and I'm glad to see it move again! (and please don't forget "my" backspace key ? :-) |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
The active screen area can also be moved to the left with an option.
|
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
This active area was born after massive brainstorm at http://n8xx.com and i find it surprisingly useful, because it make it possible to hold tabled and scroll page smoothly with one hand and it is also less sensive to accident vibrations than scrollbar.
I released 0.1.8.2 today - the last tear-improvements version. Please excuse me, i forgot about backspace key :( But added checkboxes in menu for disabling scrolling indicator and active area scrolling. Since Bundyo gave me access to tear SVN repository, there is no need in tear-improvements anymore. I will integrate my changes to Tear code tree. |

I also thought it was some kind of weird bug, because I tryed to kinetic scroll and it seemed to go backwards. Now that it is explained, I agree it is really useful. And thanks for fixing the "link clicking while trying to scroll" problem, it was the worst for me. |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Would it be possible to change Tear so that when you mark text it marks as you drag?
|
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Isn't holding the menu key working?
There is a new feature in Maemo 5 version - a Scroll Lock - with which you can enable the selection mode for a time. Maybe Mitrandir can backport it. |

Mitrandir, tear-improvements is crashing a lot when clicking on links. May be it could be useful a debug build.
|
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
no crashes here. Only issue I see is that facebook embeded video "strobes" when loading video but never actually loads. Of course previously it simply refused to show embeded video so I'm sure it's just a "nicer" refusal.

Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Hi all,
I'm happy to announce that i have released Tear 0.3.6 for Diablo. Get it from garage page: https://garage.maemo.org/projects/tear. It includes following changes:
These changes were most easy to merge from tear-improvements. More interesting stuff to follow :) If you have tear-improvements package installed, you will need to remove it first. Actually, tear-improvements contains more features than 0.3.6, but this new release should be more stable. |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Hurray!!! What about repository? Can I install it from application manager?
|
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
Right now -- no, only by hands from garage.
In order to get Tear into extras-devel, we need to upload Tear's version of webkit (1.0-svn41137-13) into extras devel too. But i don't know where to find source package for it Bundyo, i found this diff on your site: http://bundyo.org/maemo/webkit/WebKi...r41137-13.diff Is it enough to create source-deb for libwebkit using original webkit r41128? |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
any chance we can get an updated Webkit?
|
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
This one is a little older, I'll check if I have newer (or if the latest were only for Fremantle). I'll also check if bigger update is possible.
But currently this one should do it if it can go through the autobuilder. We can add updates on the fly. |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
i hope this also includes some bug fixes bundyo did, but never released a update for.
seems they where not. Still not seeing bookmarked entries in the "recently visited" or url entry suggestions. |
Re: Tear 0.3.1 - a would be beta WebKit based browser
ok, this is just silly. Finally the zoom_step setting works for me. thanks!
