The new talk.maemo.org theme

I've been working hard finishing the talk.maemo.org theme. It's about finished and we are just ironing out some bugs. We hope to roll it out within the week.

Here's a taste on how it will look:

Cool!

Hum, the Search engine should crawl the future talk.maemo.org as well...

Hmm, I'm wondering how can we do that? An option is the Google custom search (similar to itT's main page) and of course a custom code to merge search results.

Btw, I noticed that maemo.org's search page is still using the old layout.

Will there still be a choice of "skins" - mobile or otherwise ?

Most probably not but then, it will all depend on the feedback we get from the members.

Re: The new talk.maemo.org theme

I'll start the feedback: We most definitely need a mobile skin! :)

In fact, I don't see why the current mobile skin (Minimalistic) couldn't be slightly modified to work on T.M.O. (just change the colors...).

I wouldn't speak too soon. The maemo.org layout is designed to work well on tablet-sized constraints. I'd at least give it a chance rather than dismissing it out-of-hand.

AFB wants to update Minimalistic for the new site and even has some feature improvements waiting to be released.

There should be at least one dark theme. I bet most ITT users already developed vampiric vision + most distributions already have dark themes and white content looks like a hole in the browser.

As for the new theme - its nice, but please don't use -webkit-border-radius for those corners and don't limit the text-zoom.

If the Talk page is similar to the rest of m.o in terms of speed (download and render, not server), then we need a mobile theme.

If the Talk page is considerably lighter, then maybe...but even vB itself has a lot of unneeded bloat (Avatars, Sigs, etc.).

That's good news.

Re: The new talk.maemo.org theme

I have been working on mock ups for a new minimalist theme it. It looks follows the same layout as new talk theme minus the right side bar and images. Also has larger next for easy finger navigation. I have started coding it since I do longer have a copy of the minimalist theme and I have been trying to get Reggie to send me a new copy or upload it to the testing site we were using before the one there now is an older one.

I know maemo.org is being redone to load faster on tablets but for people like me stuck with Edge Data any images just about kill the system.

The new minimalist theme I was working on has 100% of the features the full site has. Just on a faster and more finger friendly way. It will take me several weeks to get it 100% done once I get the old theme file. Also I want to throw my hate in again any a Moderator of the forums.

New or old? It's plenty quick here.

Yes, please have a full-featured dark theme for the following 4 reasons:
  • Battery and eyeball conservation
  • To match the Maemo 5 SDK Alpha
  • Me
  • Bundyo
Thanks

New maemo.org theme (on N800 MicroB):

To load my profile 23 seconds (about 14 after CPU spikes to 100)

To load my profile with Minimalistic Theme at ITT :

4 seconds (or less).

And just a few weeks ago I inverted my Avatar to look better on a dark background!

Ahh! :D

Just to clarify: On LCD screens (such as those in the tablets, and on most desktops), white uses less power than black, and in general light uses less power than dark.

The opposite is true for CRT and OLED screens, but those are still/already in the minority.

I like it. Do you have a simple recipe for doing stuff like that in The Gimp? None of the demos look that good.

What about the eyeball power usage? :)

Interesting, thanks for the info. I wonder then if the Maemo 5 SDK isn't a precursor for a RX-51 CRT surprise. No... scratch that... I meant OLED surprise.

The Sony part number points to a transflective display.

Re: The new talk.maemo.org theme

The new web site is certainly faster than the old version. Kudos for those who have contributed.

However it doesn't match some of the forum themes in terms of space usage, rendering speed and accessibility (I refer to the black background, but also to the ability to zoom and FTV).

I think it would be awful to loose performance on the forum. Please keep some light and speedy theme (I like the minimalistic too).

One feature request for the forum (and maybe the web site): a user pre-determined font size. I don't know if this is possible, but it would be cool. That would avoid the use of FTV function.

Regards,
Antonio

I agree 100%. The forums are much more enjoyable when they render quickly and without horizontal scrolling and the minimal theme works wonders for that. If the new talk.maemo theme manages to do those things great. Otherwise please include the minimal theme for those of us who use it extensively.

Re: The new talk.maemo.org theme

I can't tell for sure based on the posted screenshots, but the second one makes it look like the menu on the right means that the forum posts will remain narrow all the way down, and I think this a really big usability problem, especially on the tablets, which only have 800 pixels width to deal with in the first place.

Well here goes : I've used "minimalistic" exclusively on my tablets ever since it became available, and I'd hate having to go back... :-)

Of course it will be given a chance, but to "work well" is not always the same as being quick and efficient, especially for interactive use like on a forum. I see a great deal of lateral space being wasted on the menus and boilerplate in the template, which is OK for news content on a big screen, less so for forum posts on a small one...

The new theme is now up. Please comment, suggest improvements, and report any bugs and errors you find.

The Minimalist theme has been retained, pending improvements.

Thanks!

Congrats! I like it. Only thing I find (a bug?) is that the maemo.org logo in the top left corner doesn't do anything. I'm kinda used to it taking me back to http://www.internettablettalk.com :)

nice surprise when i came here this morning. i'm happy with it. (i like changes, you know :D )

one problem i see right now while typing this:
even with the browser in fullscreen mode, the area for typing a post ("advanced") is cut off on the right. my nick and the emoticons don't show completely. they're hidden by the vertical menu and the "active topics".

no other conplaints so far ;)

Hmm. What browser and version are you using? Would you mind taking a screenshot?

Thanks.

Re: The new talk.maemo.org theme

Please, let us (me?) have back the text-only theme, too. I don't give an eurocent for all this colours and rounded corners and bars and css and the so. Sorry, I don't want to be rude, and I apologize if Ihave been: of course I appreciate the hard work to craft a pleasant appearance, but I'm really down with the absence of the "mobile" theme.

I prefer plain text, no bgcolor or plain white... and not because I'm a diehard geek... but in my opinion is much more readable and relaxing.
Shouldn't too hard to implement - just throw away all decorations

qgil 2009-04-29 06:32

Re: The new talk.maemo.org theme

First impression: very good!

- Loads decently fast even in a data connection, although it looks like improvements can be done in the way elements load. Anyway, much lighter compared to the previous default.

- Looks good in Maemo 5 ;) Actually I thought the right column would be a hassle but it's not. Fine tuning might be needed to deal with big resized images, but good for now.

- Search and New Posts shopuld be the 1st and second item in the right colum, so they are visible and easy to click, never needing a scroll down.

- It looks like a lot of vertical space can be saved by optimizing the elemhts and bloank spaces in the boxes. Now there is probably excessive "air" creating at the end a lot of extra scroll down.

- Something good about the Minimalistic theme that could be adpted in the main one are the big links to jump to other tread pages. The "< 1, 2, 3, 4 >" are not always easy to fit with a finger and they are used all the time.

- Like with the maemo.org layout, I think that something different than orange should be used for the plain text links. Otherwise the whole thing looks a lot like orange.

Cool stuff, congratulations!

Re: The new talk.maemo.org theme

It was quite a surprise when I went to the forum this morning, I thought I'd clicked the wrong link! That said, I'm prepared to see how it works.

One thing that is missing is a link to the first unread post for each thread, in the contents list for each subforum (.e.g on the http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...splay.php?f=16 page). The old theme had it, and it's the one I use most both here and on other forums.

ETA: It seems the number showing the total posts for the thread is the link I'm after, so it is there, it just wasn't obvious that's what it was.

It is going to take some getting used to. I've been using the "classic" theme for the past year, because I don't like "fancy stuff" either...

EDIT: Hey! My avatar is even SMALLER! Boo.

It seems quite faster to open thread that used current theme. but i'd like have multi-theme for different people. How many guys browse it whit N8x0? now, i used PC. So, i'd like to see other theme could be choose.

The New posts list seems to be missing a link to the latest unread post. The arrow only goes to the last post of the thread. This makes following threads a lot harder.

Agreed. The theme is a nice size for an n8x0, and reasonably finger-friendly, but just too big on a PC. Another forum I read lists 22 threads in the space that I get 12 on this new theme.

See my post above; the number of replies is the link to the first unread post. No, it isn't obvious. :D
