I do believe that is 90% of why we can't have a few themes thrown in... There is no reason a bunch of techy geeks can't get it working in less that a day.

Proposals and voting and blah blah blah. Bureaucracy. I hate it. This is not what an open-source community should be like.

spot on.....! (added characters for minimum length) :)

as for community: its more of an "everybody can join and work on a project", less an "everybody can decide what others should work on" (although we do have some of that in maemo.org, too).

i think that's what quim was trying to get across: everybody's open for community input, as long as it's input in terms of html+css. "maemo.org" is not an external web design company that takes orders. it's a term for "the community" which you are part of. so if you said the ownership is on maemo.org.... claim the ownership before any of the 18000 registered members does and comes up with a theme you hate even more than this one.

No its not "everybody can join in." If it was, mine and penguinbait's asses would be all over vbulletein adding themes and such. (Yes, working around any technical problems, pb's very good at that.)

But, no, its not like that. We can't fix it. All we can do is propose and vote, propose and vote, then repeat ad naseum. Its a load of bureaucratic bs.

I think PB has been around long enough and done enough for this community to be trusted. He's done more for the tablets and the people here than any of the council members, I might add.

Just give him the bloody keys and let him at it. That will shut everyone up and make everyone happy. I'll help in any way I can to boot.

Well, I can't say much about the bickering, but a non-branded theme (i.e. not orange-on-gray and lacking maemo.org logo) should be just fine, as long as users have to explicitly enable it. This way, newbies and random people straying into here will still see the branded theme.

Well, you can also add a bug tracker. (insert diabolical laughter here)

I can't agree more with you.

What is stopping you?

You talk about time spent with bureaucracy? Nobody really is enjoying all this time spent in all these bitter discussions.

Look what is the maemo.org bureaucracy: http://wiki.maemo.org/Pushing_a_maemo.org_task

Quote:

The maemo.org Sprint development process uses tasks to develop improvements and new ideas. If you have an idea for improving maemo.org, you can push a task to implement your idea. There are two efficient ways of pushing a task related to maemo.org development.

1. Just Do It, or
2. See below.
If you don't want to see below, then Just Do It.

What's stopping me...? I need an admin account for the forums, first of all...

Andrew is not admin and not even moderator, for what I can tell. He creates and maintains the Minimalistic theme.

Reggie is asking for a mockup to get started. All you need is Gimp or something for that.

You can also go here and request to become part of the "team":

https://garage.maemo.org/projects/maemo2midgard/

This will give you access to the maemo.org SVN, where you can edit the CSS files (et cetera) for the entire site.

This is how I changed the orange link titles to dark gray on various sections of the maemo.org website -- it wasn't because I'm a "moderator" of this forum.

Reggie has a different SVN (or FTP, I don't know) for this forum. Ask him to give you access for creating your own theme.

The thing is, no one has actually asked for this information. How did I get it? Not because I'm a Council member, but because I asked someone.

Re: POLL: Should talk.maemo.org create and support a dark theme like the original ITT

Correct me if I'm wrong. What I think I have seen in the multiple threads on this subject has been along the lines of :
"if you don't like it fix it yourself"
"to difficult to maintain multiple themes"
"give us a picture of what you want"
"no promises to implement any other themes"

even what I've read in the minimalist theme thread is that andrewblack is working on making a dark minimalist theme, but is unsure if it will be used even if he creates it (unless I've missed recent news).

It also appears that there are a couple different places where themes can be tested/modified? maemo.org SVN, a forum sandbox?

At this stage, I certainly wouldn't want to put a lot of effort into a theme if there is no guarantee it will be used.

I haven't seen anywhere (and I may be wrong) where anyone (with the power) has said something like:
"make a theme and/or get some community buy in for it and we *will* add it as an option."
Plus there seems to be multiple routes: maemo.org svn, sandbox, picture, css editing, etc.

Would some authority like to make a decision as to what process should be followed and confirm that a theme once created would be used?

Again, I apologize if I missed any of this somewhere in the multiple threads.
